Workers at a New Jersey treatment plant say they saw a heavy, metallic object fall from the sky Wednesday, and they want to know where the potentially deadly projectile came from. Michael George reports.

Workers at a New Jersey treatment plant say they saw a heavy, metallic object fall from the sky Wednesday, and they want to know where the potentially deadly projectile came from.
The employees at Secaucus Treatment Works said the 5-by-5 inch piece of metal debris hit a railing, ricocheted off a concrete tank, then hit the ground. It landed about 25 feet from where employees were working."It came close. It came pretty close," said employee Victor Suppa.
It "could have killed somebody, absolutely" if it hit anyone, added operations foreman Steven Bronowich.

The workers said the object isn't part of the plant and there were no planes in the sky at the time. They were afraid to touch it at first, but they later picked it up and examined it.
They went online in search of answers and came up with all sorts of theories.

"We went on the website and we looked up space shuttle tiles, and you could see that picture there, it basically matches up with that," said Bronowich.
It seems unlikely; the last space shuttle mission was more than three years ago. So far, no one has been able to give employees a theory that seems to fit.
Employees handed the tile over to the county health department. Officials there tell NBC 4 New York it appears to be made of ceramic, metal and rubberlike layers. They were giving the piece to the FAA Friday.

Maybe it fell off when it was in orbit and is just now coming back to earth. The tiles were heat resistant and I think they used to lose a few every now and then.

It's an access panel from a plane. I doubt the owner is going to claim it.

You might, but they are employees on district land. Why do you think they passed it off to the Health Dept.?

The thing looks burned... as if by re-entry. I would guess shuttle, rocket panel, or soem other space debris that finally came home. Gotta be worth a few thousand $$.

Inadequate damage to the edges for re-entry.

But a NASA (http://www.neonnettle.com/tags/nasa) spokesperson suggested that it ‘extremely unlikely’ that the object is part of a space craft as the tiles are a lot thicker and usually have a unique serial number printed on them. “It’s extremely unlikely this object is related to the space shuttle”, NASA said in a statement. “We have not flown the space shuttle since 2011, we had highly accurate accounting of the tiles, and this does not appear to be one”.
And so, the mystery continues. Workers have handed the tile over to county health department, and will also be calling upon the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the search for an explanation. Employees at the Secaucus plant say this is not the first time they have faced strange hazards.
Bronowich recalled, “We’ve been dropped on by seagulls, crabs, they fly over, they drop the remains of the crabs”.
“One of my guys got hit in the head with it. Dive-bombing seagulls”.

The tiles from the space craft are very ligh.....if all the tiles were that heavy it would then fly nowhere.
