So this is a Gee Gee race run in Melbourne, Australia. The Melbourne Cup. Like the KT Derby is considered the horse racing event of the year at Flemington.
I don't get horse racing. Do not understand it. Don't understand racing them, riding them in a race, breeding them or any of that stuff. Don't understand betting on them either and I'm mystified why some people spend all day in the betting shops. We have a monopoly Totaliser agency (TAB) where you can place your bets and watch races. And why do all horse people talk funny.
Anyway for some years now we get over seas horses bought in to race. A japanese horse has been the talk of the town for the past week or so. How its going to storm the field etc.
Oh well that horse ran last, poorly and then dropped dead.
A second horse was startled by the crowd at the winners circle and has broken something. I'm assuming a leg bone. Basically means another dead horse.
I get riding a horse as a cowboy or for transport. I have ridden horses and I don't mind it. But racing? pass.
The 2014 Melbourne Cup has taken a tragic turn with pre-race favourite Admire Rakti dying after the race.
After surprisingly finishing in last position, the Japanese raider reportedly collapsed and died not long after.
Don't think the horse was drugged much?

Of course the real reason this horse is so popular is because a lot of businesses either go out to lunch or stop for lunch and have a bit of time off in the afternoon or the whole day for some.
Notes: I said overseas horses not sea horses
dead horse is also the slang name for ketchup in Australia (tomato sauce - dead horse)

Just reading some more on this story. It turns out that 125 horses have died in horse racing in Australia this year.
The RSPCA said Admire Rakti's death was a stark reminder of the risks to racehorses.
"Sadly, injury and death are the price some horses pay for our entertainment in a sport that puts intense pressure on animals to perform to the limits of their endurance."
Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses spokesman Ward Young said about 125 horses have died during or shortly after Australian races in the past year.
"These events are more common then we would like to believe," he told AAP.
There is also the controversy of the handicap. The horse that died carried the maximum weight any horse has every had to carry in a race ( I heard this, not checked. They had him in the lead up race last month at the Caufield Cup. They loaded him up. Then there was some arguing about giving him more weight for this race.
They decided they would add just another 0.5Kgs.
The owner of the horse said that if they increased the amount at all he would pull the horse. Apparently 0.5Kgs was not an increase. He kept the horse in the race.

I grew up with horse racing and saw how ugly it is first hand, its not a pleasant subject for me.

My grandfather used to follow it through the news papers in the '70s and '80s. No clue how he did it but would come home with a brand new car every year or two. Would hand the older cars to my father. He was just a machinist.

They put the other horse down. That's the bit I don't get. That a broken leg is so critical they put horse out of it's misery? Can't walk again. I don't know?
They do it just to get the insurance? I like horses I think they are noble. Seems a shame the nobility enslaves them.

Back ago there wasn't an insurance incentive, something about a broken leg being one of the worst things a horse can get. Not enough circulation for it to ever heal plus it has to be immobilized with no weight for most of a year. An almost impossible situation plus the horse is in misery from what I read.

yeah thats pretty sad. I realise the legs are mostly bone but what happened to miracle science? Comes down to $$ and the reality that it's just an animal. My figuring was that the horse wont run again but if the leg can mend the horse could be retired. Instead they end up as uhu or french lasagna.

For some people I think it's the competition and the ego boost of having the fastest and best horse. For others it's a way to skin the inexperienced out of their money. I think Jews like to own the race tracks and collect the goyims money that way.
Horse racing has been going on a long time. Cebu is right about it being pretty much impossible to fix a broken leg on a horse. I've had a couple of big thoroughbred horses that didn't make it on the track. They were plenty fast for catching up to calves and roping them. They were big and stout and they also were good for roping and tying down cows and bulls to doctor them when I was working alone.
I have enjoyed watching local relay races at rodeos where the local ranches bring in their horses and the indians bring there's from the reservation. You can get caught up in the excitement of the riders switching saddles and horses in the race. Some bet on the teams entered in the race but mostly it's just the excitement of watching the horses and contestants for the majority of the spectators.

Glass if you haven't read the story of the race horse Seabisquit in the book by Laura Hillenbrand you should and it will maybe help you understand some of what's involved in these races. There was also a movie made of this horses story and the people around him and racing. It's a good read and the movie is a good watch.
Seabisquit was described as a knobby kneed looking cow pony and all the people around him were misfits. The combination helped to heal all of them of things that had and were going wrong in there lives. It's a story of the underdogs going against the elite and in the end winning. It's a hell of a story and was a good read and a good movie for me.
I have a friend that used to shoe and trim race horses for the Vanderbilts. He'd also been a jockey. He loaned me his book many years ago and I've read it several times and should probably read it again. It's the story of Seabisquit and his misfit handlers going up against War Admiral the best horse the eastern elite had at the time and winning. I'd forgotten about it but I think I have the movie on dvd and I"m going to get it out and watch it again.

Much evidence for God's creation in a horse.

Do you remember that incident maybe 4 or 5 year ago, where there were a group of young women sitting on the lawn and one of them took a photo and standing behind one of the women was a man who had his thing out taking a leak while he was standing there with some friends. Turns out he was a stock broker or something.
