I’ve been doing this since I was a graduate student, looking at plutonium in the Atlantic deposited from the atmospheric nuclear weapons testing that peaked in the early 1960’s. Then came Chernobyl in 1986, the year of my PhD… The triple disaster of the 2011 “Tohoku” earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent radiation releases at Fukushima Dai-ichi were unprecedented events for the ocean and society… the cooling waters and contaminated groundwater enter the ocean directly, and still can be measured to this day. Across the Pacific, ocean currents carrying Fukushima cesium are predicted to be detectable along the west coast of North America by 2014 or 2015, and though models suggest at levels below those considered of human health concern, measurements are needed. That being said, in the US, no federal agency has taken on this task… new sampling efforts further offshore have confirmed the presence of small amounts of radioactivity from the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant 100 miles (150 km) due west of Eureka. Rense has reco'd during a rain, check the water pouring out your gutter downspout. Compare to tap water, and whatever other items.

Rense has a small network of "Rad Station" volunteers... funnily, the ones I checked were 20-40, but the highest was Ft. Collins CO, ~1000 miles from Pacific coast, which was all 40-50.

If you haven't gotten a geiger counter yet this is the specific model you can find deals on feebay, a Ludlum Model 3 with preferably a 44-9 pancake probe. Gotta be careful though and make sure the seller properly represents the item, I had to send one back because it was DOA. Ludlum does a great job of applying a powder coat so you have to look very closely at the photos of the item to try to determine how hard and much the particular Model 3 you're interested in has been used. You can find a Ludlum Model 3 w/ a 44-9 probe on feebay for ~$350 to $500+. I suggest you send it to Ludlum for a calibration ($60, best price going for calibration/check). Ludlum also sells 'check source' stickers for the side of your Model 3. For comparison Inspector gieger counters with a pancake probe run $750 and those are not nearly heavy duty as a Ludlum. Additionally I would advise sending any used instrument acquired from a feebay directly to Ludlum for calibration/check to make sure you received a good unit.
