PARIS (AP) — HSBC bank was placed under formal investigation in France over services it offered to clients required to pay taxes in France, just days after the private banking branch was charged in Belgium with organized fiscal fraud.
Switzerland-based HSBC Private Bank said Friday that French investigators demanded a 50 million euro ($62 million) bond. The office of France's financial prosecutor confirmed that an investigation was opened on Tuesday.
France's government is increasingly cracking down on tax dodgers, including establishing an office dedicated solely to investigating financial crimes.
HSBC said the investigation involves the bank's actions in France from 2006 to 2007. HSBC, Europe's largest bank by market value, has had similar problems in recent years.
Two years ago, it agreed to pay a $1.9 billion fine in the U.S. to settle a money-laundering probe. It faced accusations it transferred funds through the U.S. from Mexican drug cartels and on behalf of nations such as Iran that are under international sanctions.
In Belgium, prosecutors said the private banking branch is suspected of "promoting and encouraging fiscal fraud" by putting offshore companies in Panama and the Virgin Islands at the disposal of clients. It said the companies were created to hide clients' assets.

Actress Emma Thompson and her husband refuse to pay ‘a penny more’ in taxes until HSBC tax evaders go to jail
Friday 27th February 2015
Greg Wise, the actor married to Oscar winner Emma Thompson, has said he and his wife will refuse to pay tax until those involved in the HSBC scandal go to prison.

Wise spoke of his disgust with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the bank after the Guardian and other news organisations published leaked details of 100,000 accounts held by HSBC’s Swiss arm which showed how the bank had helped clients to move cash out of the country.

“I want to stop paying tax, until everyone pays tax,” Wise told the Evening Standard. “I have actively loved paying tax, because I am a profound fucking socialist and I believe we are all in it together. But I am disgusted with HMRC. I am disgusted with HSBC. And I’m not paying a penny more until those evil bastards go to prison.”’

French protestors call for HSBC nationalization

‘Activists in France have staged a protest rally against the British bank, HSBC, for its illegal banking practices, Press TV reports.

On Thursday, members of the French Communist party gathered on the Champs-Elysées avenue in the capital city of Paris to demand the nationalization of the bank.

The protesters staged a mock arrest of the HSBC Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver as anger toward high finance continues to mount in austerity-racked France.

“There is an investigation against HSBC, but what about the other banks which all do the same? We need to see banks save the people instead of hiding the colossal fortune of the rich,” a protestor told Press TV.’
