Considering moving up to the Appalachian mountains of western Virginia, or on the NC side.
I had just spent 4 days up there this past week at a friends cabin in Virginia...I loved it!

Love the mountains, the views and the neat little towns. Lot's of history, places to explore, stocked rivers/streams, great hunting and 4 wheeling/quading.

If I find the right home, or log cabin w/acres of land, this could be another move.
Cheap home prices and very low property taxes. Average snowfall is 21 inches, so not too bad.

Is it time to really bug out and be a mountain man?

I haven't spent too much time looking for land, but what I've seen, you can get a lot of awesome land pretty cheap.

Here's one Log cabin I looked at: 1,870 sq ft + full walk out/drive in basement on a few acres. Property taxes are about $600 a year.

My friends are looking at another for me on Saturday. Awesome view of three states of mountains. About 3,000 ft. ele.

If things work out, you might have another friend in that area to come and visit. :)

Yes, I've met some really good people there.

I think that's how it's done around there. People are reaching on prices, but they will take a lot less.
You have to really low ball them to get the game going.

Were just down the road a ways from there but in the foot hills. Locals usually stay to themselves and are friendly. I don't think I would want to go higher in elevation because the reason I moved here is no one likes winter.

The real locals that haven't relocated here will not usually move on price however the ones that relocate tend to haggle a bit more. I found a bank foreclosure for pennies on the dollar, needs some more repairs but will likely get 4x my investment.

HOME W/ ACREAGE CLOSE TO NATIONAL FOREST $118,000.00

See there, you don't have to be house poor to get what you need. The property tax on that one is probably less then $500 a year.

My criteria:
1,800 sq ft or more living space
Full walk-out/drive-in basement
Awesome views
No higher then 3,000 ft elevation
2 acres on up, somewhat private.
Close to a maintained road
Full sun on home and on cleared property, I want to see the sun rise, not be buried in the trees.
1/2 hour or less to town for groceries and Lowes building supply

Bonus: out building/s, creek, pond, large rock formations on property, fenced.

1067 right here, 1/8 mile down the road is appx 550 ft lower. Not many flat roads but they are all paved, no dirt roads unless you really get far out in no-mans land.

I've been living in the Rockies in a remote area for 5 1/2 years. I should have done this a decade earlier. Two things you might consider...get a place with more acreage. It usually doesn't cost that much more and it sure gives you a lot more privacy and quiet.
This is currently a buyers market. Make offers of about 75% of asking price. If they refuse, you can always hit them again months later with a few thousand more.
Learn to use the internet to inspect properties. County appraisal districts often have tons of info about things like adjacent tracts. A place surrounded with larger tracts is more desireable than one surrounded by small tracts. Use google maps topozone.

In rural ares it matters a lot who your neighbors are. One sorry ass neighbor can make you miserable with his gangbanger music.

My place is on a couple hundred acres:

I agree about the neighbors, in fact, I have some neighbor info on the home I'm checking out now, but I would have no problem knocking on the door of the nearest neighbor to meet them and get the low down around me before I make an offer to buy.

What's your elevation?

What's your elevation?I'm at 4500. Mostly Southern exposure so not too much snow buildup in the winter. I have 6 switchbacks on my driveway. Makes life interesting when I plow snow. Privacy and seclusion are valuable commodities. I have both.

The site worked. That's the problem though. The site, itself, is big brother. He's watching me, AND you. Call me a prick for being pessimistic, but buying acreage in the mountains might feel like a solution, but doesn't solve anything.

We are fucked. Nobody can run nor hide anymore.

You are right about that. So in knowing, just live your life the best you can, live for adventure, and when it's over and it's your time to die...take as many of the bastards with you as you can, standing on your feet.

btw, I'm not hiding from anyone, I've spent my life bouncing around from adventure to adventure. Living as a mountain man would be just one more adventure. I'll keep doing it until I can no more.
I grew up with friends that are still living in the same house, same neighborhoods, doing the same shit. That's not me.

EE, my apologies, I'm sorry for disrupting your thread. Mick, I apologize to you too.

It's just so frustrating all the BS that gets fed to us, from the distractions like Ferguson, to what's covered up by the media, like Ebola.

I don't mean to accuse anyone of hiding. I'm not hiding, and I know there's lots of good folks on this forum. I've been around here, long enough, to see that.

Anyway, sorry brother for being such a downer. EE, seriously, that country looks amazingly beautiful. If you can score up a good deal, all the best my friend. I really liked that one cabin you posted pictures of.

You can disrupt any thread I start. I never care about things like that. I implore you to speak your mind whenever you feel like it.

Like someone said once, "I don't care about a lot of things anymore, but what I do care about, I care about a lot"
Pretty much how I feel.

I do get frustated like you about all the shit that's deliberately beingdone to destroy this country.
Everything is lies and fraud. The most frustrating thing is, there is no hope for this country and no one is standing up to fix things. The have's are all bought, or just don't care.

One cannot hide completely, but one can isolate oneself from both the ubiquitous cameras and the hordes of rabid beasts that populate the cities. Additionally, mountains are Godly in their beauty and health benefits.

The Babylon System's goal is to herd as many of us into cities as possible. Do the opposite.
