This article has been corrected.

Remember Waterworld, the extravagant 1995 dystopian Hollywood flop that imagined Earth after the polar ice caps melted, with humans living on what looked like floating junkyards? You might not be growing gills and webbed feet a la Kevin Costner anytime soon, but your great-great-great-great-great children might have to worry about finding dry land.

The United States Geological Survey estimates (http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs2-00/) that if the ice sheets located in the Antarctic and Greenland melt as a result of climate change, sea levels could rise up to 80 meters (approx. 262 feet). Jeffrey Linn, a Seattle-based urban planner who is between jobs, decided to use some of his spare time to show how this climate apocalypse would affect a number of cities in North America (http://spatialities.com/).

Linn was inspired by a post on a website called Burrito Justice (http://burritojustice.com/2012/03/20/san-francisco-archipelago/) that envisioned San Francisco under water. In this slightly morbid exercise, Linn makes up imaginative names for the islands and inlets that would remain of Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver or Montreal.

He used USGS data on sea level rise, and says on his website, Spatialities.com, that he is not showing anything outside the realm of possibility, even if his predictions look dire.

“This will happen someday, but not in our lifetimes,” Linn writes, pointing out that timeline predictions vary widely, leaving any estimates with huge margins of error. So don’t worry, the human race could have anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 years to enjoy our time on dry land.

“The debate over how fast the ice sheets are melting is an academic one, really,” Greg Hanscom writes in his post about the project on Grist (http://grist.org/cities/heres-what-your-city-will-look-like-when-the-ice-sheets-melt/). But he also points out that some say the sea level could rise by up to 16 feet by the end of this century.

“What fascinates me the most about this project is the landforms, bays, seas and other geographies that emerge,” Linn writes.

Linn even indulges in a bit of speculation about the kind of swashbuckling tribalism that might emerge in his scenario. “I think the islands will be inhabited by pirates—tribes of Queen Ann islanders and Capitol Hill islanders living in shaky détente, with occasional forays on each others’ territories.”

Again, see: Waterworld.

Even iffff the oceans wouldn't rise much at all, like ice in a glass. Try it, fill a glass half full, add ice and mark the water level. Check it after the ice melts. Don't fill the fucking glass full where it bottoms out, that's wrong and cheating.

Yeah sure, but its good to keep abreast of the crap they are peddling.

"They" say its not so much the ice sheets which are immersed that will cause the problem but when the terrestrial glacial melt flows into the oceans.

Personally I don't buy their bullshit on this as the scientific data has been selectively picked to bolster the hypothesis, even the causality they point out as fact is miniscule anyway and could easily not represent the actual situation.

Perhaps, but only with a mountain of ridicule.

But "global warming" is "fact" because "scientific consensus" has "established" it as "fact." :)

Its for the very same reasons that I DON'T buy the hype around climate change. The data has been manipulated beyond recognition, I would hardly call it "scientific" because of the lies and omissions that have been made with the data in the first place, a real scientist would NEVER treat the data that way.

I know you were just posting that for shits and giggles, so have at it...asshole :p

If ALL all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet). This sucks because where I live in Pasadena I'm at 1,000 feet above sea level so I won't EVER have ocean front property.

The problem isn't with the sea level rising, it's the rising temperature of the sea water. It is a fact that the temperature of the sea is rising.

Nobody likes to talk about methane hydrates being released. All it takes is a 1 degree change in sea temps, for them to start releasing. A 3 degree increase in temp would release 85% of all the hydrates in the oceans. Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas. Would this release have a catastrophic effect on the atmosphere? Who knows. The other big issue with these hydrates releasing, is the devastating effect it would have on the oceans phytoplankton population. Well, who cares about that except that phytoplankton supply up to 85% of the world's oxygen content. Like breathing much?

Time for some Hyper math...8 5 = August 5, I got laid on August 5.

8x5=40 +1, I am 41 years old.

8-5 =3 I wish to have a threesome once in my life before methane hydrates kill us all off.

Actually, no, it's not. Pete, you're swallowing their crap! Don't!

If the oceans were warming, this wouldn't be happening:

We can expect this will have a similar effect in the Arctic, despite current claims to the contrary:

Methane hydrate release is another of the "FEAR!!!!" tools the "global warming" nuts are trying to push on the boobs of the world.

"Global warming" / "climate change" is a huge business, both for money-making and geopolitical control. It has to "succeed." The facts which show it's false will be "explained away" on the flimsiest of pretexts, and scientists who dare not follow the "consensus" will be personally destroyed (careers ended, or worse).

No, it's not just a fear, it is real and happening. Fact, no matter what anyone posts regarding the climate getting colder....seawater temps are RISING. When/if we get a huge methane release, it will destroy the phytoplankton population, possible disrupt our ocean currents. Send us into the next ice age. And, deprive us the oxygen we need to live and sustain life.

How is that for a big conspiracy?

Check out this video on methane release...

According to whom and in reference to what?

Sea temps have been taken consistently and accurately for how long, a century or so?

The problem is that people validate and authenticate global warming based upon temperatures, on what they see and feel around them. Take the BP oil spill in the gulf. I remember reading articles forcasting that the spill, and chemicals they are using to cover it up, corexit, etc, would actually stop the ocean currents in the Atlantic.

So, the current moves North, bring warm waters from the Caribean, florida, ect. all the way up the coast, New York and eventually to Europe. You stop that current....you've got the next ice age in those areas.

Stop all ocean currents, you STOP heat from being spread out globally. You'll have ice ages in certain parts of the world, and heat strokes in others.

The folks in Europe freezing their asses of will say 'global warming' is a bunch of BS...and the folks in the tropics will say when will this warming stop.

Long enough to see the trend, a constant sea temp going up, year after year. Remember, those hydrates down there, don't have the fluctuation of temps that our ocean currents provide on the surface depending on seasons, and such.

All it takes is a degree or two rise down there, and SHTF for the whole planet. It's like a huge bomb waiting to go off.

I would feel honored to be here if/when the planet implodes. I would say I was at the best party (years) in history and stayed until the very end, waking up in the morning with naked bodies all over in a completely trashed house and Black Sabboth still playing.

I honestly think you've watched The Day After Tomorrow too many times. :)

The Atlantic Conveyor has not stopped or changed. The doom scenarios of the Deepwater Horizon affecting the Florida Current, with a cascade effect on the Atlantic Conveyor, did not happen.

The "warming trend" is, at best, a couple decades out of thousands or millions of years. Not a serious comparison. Any apparent "warming" of the ocean is easily attributed to El Niño or similar, partially-understood, natural, normal weather patterns.

Ultimately, remember that the driver of Earth's weather and climate is the Sun. The Sun's output varies significantly. It accounts for both Ice Ages and significantly-warmer warming periods distant in the past.
