Cops shoot, then sue
The Week Staff | December 6, 2014 Nine Cleveland police officers who killed two unarmed African-Americans in a hail of 137 bullets in 2012 are suing the city, claiming they were unfairly punished because they are not black. The killings of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams — who were each shot more than 20 times — came after cops mistook their car backfiring for a gunshot. The officers were suspended with pay for three days, but claim they were unfairly subjected to "unofficial punishments" because of their race.
