An orangutan held in an Argentine zoo can be freed and transferred to a sanctuary after a court recognized the ape as a "non-human person" unlawfully deprived of its freedom, local media reported on Sunday.
Animal rights campaigners filed a habeas corpus petition - a document more typically used to challenge the legality of a person's detention or imprisonment - in November on behalf of Sandra, a 29-year-old Sumatran orangutan at the Buenos Aires zoo.
In a landmark ruling that could pave the way for more lawsuits, the Association of Officials and Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) argued the ape had sufficient cognitive functions and should not be treated as an object.
The court agreed Sandra, born into captivity in Germany before being transferred to Argentina two decades ago, deserved the basic rights of a "non-human person."

non human person would describe nearly all persons.
It's a shame that giraffe's don't come from there. In their native Denmark they have neither the right to life or to freedom.

It is high time to get those non-human persons off on their own, supporting themselves and not relying on the white human person to provide them food and a dwelling place, and raise their offspring.

The chimps name was SANDRA. That is the name of a TRUST. A TRUST is a person. This TRUST happens to have been occupied by an orangutan as a sole occupant. Other trusts are occupied by men or women but they are all persons. Who is to say that one TRUST has rights another TRUST does not when they all have the same character (legal fictions).
The agents for the TRUST filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus. These writs are typically granted by a court so that the TRUST named can be removed from the jurisdiction of one court and brought into the jurisdiction of another court.
If there is a name then there is a TRUST. All names are TRUST names.

So far, this... "person" has been referred to as an orangutan, an ape, and a chimp. I was under the impression that they were not interchangeable terms. What I found is that orangutans and chimps are both apes, but an orangutan is NOT a chimp. So those calling this person a chimp should stop it! ;)

You are concentrating on an attribute rather than the TRUST.
Have you never heard of an old lady reserving a portion of her estate to a TRUST to keep her favorite kitty cared for? These TRUSTS are the person rather than the beneficiary. Kitty could defeat the trust by running off with the next tomcat.

So if the chimp gets out of its zoo cage, is this a literal chimp-out?

I'll bet the monkey won't try to shoplift cigars, or attack a cop, or resist arrest, or take a gun and off two cops, or play the knock-out game, or gang-rape white women, or go protest missing college classes then demand the college issue passing grades, or....
