The phone thing is a manifestation of social anxiety, in my opinion. Used to be at a social gathering (or even walking down the street), you didn't have that out... you learned to work through times of social stress, or you kept to yourself. Now, you can be in a social situation without actually being there. Oh sure, you can check back in every once in a while, but why bother?
That's going to turn out well over the next few years... people won't even be able to be in the same room with each other, they will be so socially backwards.

I must disagree. The phone obsession is a manifestation of narcissism. If they were actually on the phone with someone, to distract them from an uncomfortable environment, I'd agree with you. But they are posting horseshit to CIAbook, Twitter, Instagram, or some other idiot Web 2.0 website..."look at me! I am at the party to be at right now! And you aren't, LOL!"

You're a different breed. I don't think you're a true narcissist, just very ego-centric. You are too interested in the truth to be a narcissist.

The problem is that everyone today assumes you have your phone on you. They assume, you'll drop a conversation and text them instantly. They assume, you'll put your phone over everything else.
I left my phone in the car, forgot about it, to find I missed 5 calls from work, a bunch of "where are you text messages". This was a few days ago. Fuck em. I'm sure work is pissed, but no a phone is not a leash. I'll answer when I damn feel like it.

I think either of our theories is perfectly valid, and that both apply quite frequently in practice.

I think that they just managed to get people hooked to the machine. You create your own digital fantasy world there, and most prefer to live in it, and they only marginally interact in the real world with the intent to add something interesting to their virtual reality world. Sure it increases narcissism and reduces social skills, but those are only symptoms of being hooked to the machine, and it makes you love the machine even more!

I wonder if that's exactly what I (and possibly others here) are doing? I don't have instafacetwitch or anything, but I do spend a significant amount of time here...

Guilty! At least being aware of the problem is a start... Maybe restoring Hypertigers posting rights would be a good thing, making the transition off the machine a bit easier... ;D He is right though about it, the Internet is the matrix/machine, and as long as we are hooked up to it, we are controlled. The more conspiracies we uncover, the less time we spend in reality doing something about it. Bitching and moaning about it here=containment... Further No critical mass of real action will occurr as long as there is Internet=TPTB priority number 1 is to keep Internet on. They can reduce food rations to minimal sustainable levels, most people would sit by their computers and watch food riots distant from where they are and follow it...

Not feeling alone. I am with family in Sweden now. I am alone quite often though, especially when working in Istanbul, but I see people all day when working, so it is quite nice to be alone in the evenings. I am fine in company with only myself... :)

not narcissism, I must disagree... but brainwashing.
If there were posting about how to let the system collapse under its own weight, that would be THE MOST AWESOME PIC in the world.
no machine is evil but the mind(s) behind it.

well I have arrived in the big apple an will spend xmas eve in a NJ multi-million dollar home with CFOs/CEOs and bankers... and I plan on leaving a strong impression in most of them, diplomatically and rationally speaking as I want their attention instead of withdrawal/denial :)
LOL, my brother-in-law told me yesterday, right after I asked him "what's up"... I work for a smaller bank now.
ps: I wont be drinking at all as I wish my intent to be successful. Not a drinker as I havent drunk in last 8 months, but 1 glass now could doom my "agenda".

Don't care much for distilled anything, as I consider all of them straight poison, but I have pretty close ties with this brewery/distillery (no, I don't work there)... from what I have tried, stuff seems pretty decent. Any of you 'shine drinkers make it out to SD, we'll head over and do a tasting...

Yeah, your analogy isn't helping your case. You do realize you are talking to a homebrewer and small batch pro craft brewer, right? Do you think I drink Miller?
LOL @ using Miller as a comparison... TM's distillery operation covers about 400 sq ft inside a warehouse. I guess if the operation is licensed, it must suck, regardless of the talent of the distiller?

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but all the supermarkets and convenience stores around here have vast selections of finely crafted beers. There are 3bbl nano breweries around here getting their beers on the supermarket shelves. "Store bought" doesn't necessarily mean "shitty American light lagers" anymore. San Diego craft breweries did $1B last year. Impressive stats here:
http://www.brewersassociation.org/statistics/national-beer-sales-production-data/
The macros are getting nervous, which is why they are increasingly buying smaller craft operations, mostly back east... they'll never touch SD though. Fuck them.
Sorry for further derailing this thread...

Originally, moonshine was a term used to describe high-proof distilled spirits, generally produced illicitly, unlicensed, and done at night to avoid discovery.
I suspect the apple pie flavored stuff I drank was homemade, in the sense that someone cooked an apple juice mixture, added
some booze of unknown origin to the mix, and sealed it into mason jars to give it that homemade down home appeal. Like jams and jellies at the flea market,
only probably not legal to sell because of the alcohol content. It's possible that the booze was distilled at home on a stove top still though, coming from the
guy that shared it, but I really don't know. Maybe he doesn't either, since it was given to him as well.
It's not all that complicated to make a small still out of a pressure cooker.
I had some "real" moonshine back in the 60's and it tasted raw, or green. I didn't like it. Generally, I think most folks would mix it for the added kick.

My experience of homemade brew parties is you run out of the stuff in the first hour or two and wind up purchasing vast quantities of mass produced stuff trying to substitute th original, i guess?
Is either that, or your too blasted to care the difference.
