Ethnic Makeovers: Women and Jewish Noses in Hollywood
In her autobiography, Tori Spelling recalls a girlhood experience. She asked her mother if she was pretty, to which her mother responded, "You will be once you get your nose fixed." For decades, teen girls from well-off Jewish families routinely received rhinoplasty as bat mitzvah, birthday, Hannukkah and graduation gifts. TV's musical-comedy-drama Glee devoted an episode ("Born This Way") to this tradition when Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) feels compelled to get the size of her nose reduced.

Doctor: You're sixteen right? That's when I gave my daughters theirs. It's like a rite of passage for Jewish girls.
Lea Michele went through a similar experience as a teen, urged to undergo rhinoplasty surgery early in her career. “How many managers told me, ‘Get a nose job. You’re not pretty enough.’” In interviews, Michele says she is "proud" to have avoided the pressure to have cosmetic surgery. "I was one of the only girls in my high school that didn’t get [a nose job]."

Over the last decade, however, there's been a significant drop in Jewish nose "reshapings." In fact, some cosmetic surgeons have started specializing in rhinoplasties that preserve or even restore ethnic identity Babak Azizzadeh, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and a Persian Jew who attended Beverly Hills High (which he calls a "mecca of rhinoplasty"), says he no longer sees Jewish parents pushing their teenage children to get nose jobs the way they used to. His website outlines a more moderate approach.
Dr. Azizzadeh specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty procedures. He has a thorough understanding of the differences in nose aesthetics among every ethnicity and is therefore able to preserve the patient’s heritage. Many ethnic patients seek out Dr. Azizzadeh because he is able to help them achieve a more desirable nose, while at the same time keeping their ethnic identity intact.
If valuing ethnic identity had been part of the rhinoplasty conversation twenty years ago, Jennifer Gray might still have a movie career. A couple of years after starring as Frances "Baby" Houseman, a rebellious Jewish teen in Dirty Dancing, to great acclaim, Gray got a nose job, standard procedure for Hollywood. But it backfired. "I went in the operating room a celebrity – and came out anonymous. It was like being in a witness protection program or being invisible." "I'll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognizes... because of a nose job."

In Glee, Rachel is finally persuaded not change her nose after listening to her "born this way" gay buddy Kurt's impassioned speech about how she would be letting down her nose-proud idol, Barbra Streisand. Lea Michele was similarly persuaded. “My mom always told me growing up, ‘Barbra Streisand didn’t get a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’”

Lisa Kudrow looks great too, imo, always liked her from that show Friends. She looks good being older too. Some women keep getting better looking with age.

I think this thread is a bit harsh on these people, imo. Prefer to judge folks as individuals.

They're not all ugly, largely because about half of them are well-over half Aryan genetically. Elizabeth Banks, for example, is not genetically Jewish - she's a convert. That's not an excuse, but condemning her for "looking Jewish" would be ridiculous, as she's half Scot, half Irish. Jane Levy looks largely Aryan, as well, despite the name. On the other hand, Scot Isla Fisher looks like she could be a Jewess, but is another convert.

The most overrated one on the list is Scarlett Johansson - I cannot stand her looks. If she wasn't a halfling, she wouldn't be a star. Another yucky overrated one is Ginnifer Goodwin.

That is a very good guess, madfranks, I hadn't made that comparison. It was actually Jean Peters from "Pickup on South Street" (1953) - shown on TCM occasionally. She (Jean Peters) was quite a beauty and didn't need no stinkin' nose job, discovered by, and married to, Howard Hughes.
