In a twist on sit-in-style protests, civil rights activists entered several restaurants in New York City and Oakland, Calif., on Sunday in what organizers billed as “Black Brunch.”
About three dozen people participated in demonstrations in New York, where they momentarily “disrupted” meals at popular midtown eateries, including Lallisse, Maialino and Pershing Square — places protesters identified as predominantly “white spaces.”

At each stop, demonstrators read the names of African-Americans killed by police.

“Every 28 hours, a black person in America is killed by the police,” the protesters said. “These are our brothers and sisters. Today and every day, we honor their lives.”

There were no immediate reports of arrests, and the protests were said to be largely peaceful — though there were reports of verbal clashes with brunchgoers and waitstaff.

The manager at Resto NYC tried to literally push one of our comrades in order to push us out. We did not move.

Others appeared to show solidarity with the demonstrators.

The brunch demonstrations originated in Oakland late last year (http://www.blackoutcollective.org/#Home) during nationwide protests triggered by the police killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner in Staten Island.

On Saturday in Berkeley, Calif., demonstrators participated in a “black brunch” protest (http://www.dailycal.org/2015/01/03/activists-march-shops-restaurants-black-brunch-demonstration/) that wasn’t limited to restaurants.

While many applauded the nonviolent tactic on Twitter, where #BlackBrunch was trending in the U.S. on Sunday, others mocked it.

I don't really believe anything out of Berkeley anymore. They protest just to protest, it has no meaning anymore with them. It's all abut what's cool and popular these days.

Universities are a hot bed of progressive politics. I recall time in universtiy and there was a student union and every student had to register with it, pay it some money and then maybe use some services. Depending on the campus you were on the services could be: second hand book shop, post office, ATM's, a student bar/refractory.

Then you had to watch as all the "progressives" make nuisances of themselves, dyke this, marxist that, fiddling the books, protest somethings and so on. Disgraceful but these people become the next generation of movers and shakers in politics and they are all narcissistic from the get go. There was a federal government push to disband them but it became an option to give your funds to charity instead of the union, but you still had to part with some cash to be left in peace.

Universities exploit the combination of latent intelligence and incredibly profound naivete of most college kids. So-called "progressive" academic types, from grad assistants to professors to administrators, all gather them in to the spectrum of permissible "thought" via direct tutoring, lecture, advisorship, and sponsored events. The college kids, intoxicated by their apparent intellectual prowess, believe they've become part of something "special" which will "change the world." They have no clue they're actually woefully benighted, and are generally being used for self-serving reasons by narcissists and other defective personalities.

Some kids have an epiphany, occasionally before graduation, generally more often in the real world of corporate/institutional work. A significant number, however, retain their fanaticism into adulthood, and show up in influential positions where they are useful idiots with utilitarian brains. All of them were denied the proper, traditional purpose of a university, however: the duty to teach how to think and self-reflect. A few will eventually abandon the distortions & outright lies which they were taught were "true" by "distinguished academics." The rest will retain such nonsense in varying degrees, never reflecting upon how such ideas actually fit (or, more accurately, don't fit) into the real world. These are your typical "moderate" Democrats & Republicans, who own iPhones/iPads, swill Starbucks, and follow trends as metrosexuals.

This is why I have stopped promoting university "education" to young people. One can get a real education at a junior college or trade school, which will allow one to earn as much annually as most Bachelor's and Master's level degrees (save for some fields, like science & technology), without as much brainwashing, and at far less cost.

I look back on my undergraduate and graduate "education," and see some fond memories and valuable learning, but, all-in-all, it was truly a waste of time considering what else I could have done with my life.

I agree. I tell people let the kid go and work if work is what they want to do. University has limited value now and to be honest I learnt most of my skills after University. A skill, trade or craft could have been better. I was a directionless worker drone for many years after high school until I realised there had to be better safer work places and someone suggested a way into University other than via high school.
