The Army is searching for a suspect after an "active shooter" was reported as a West Texas military hospital.

Apparently, the El Paso VA Hospital, not Fort Bliss' hospital, though they are nearby or connected. One doctor shot, and shooter dead.

There's a reason that in every reference to this event in the media, "active shooter" is just that: in quotes.

I guess I was inviting discussion. There are many reasons to put a term in quotation marks. If the term "active shooter" is well-entrenched in the AmEng lexicon already (and I think it is - God knows it's been jammed down people's throats often enough), then why put it in quotes?
