Target is leaving Canada.

The cheap-chic retailer’s first and only foray into international territory ended with a whimper today (Jan. 15), underscoring the difficulties companies face when trying to export their strategies around the globe. Brian Cornell, who took the helm at the struggling US retailer last year, said he was “unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021″ and that it would discontinue operations at 133 stores across the country (http://pressroom.target.com/news/target-corporation-announces-plans-to-discontinue-canadian-operations). Originally, it had said its Canadian operations would be profitable by 2013.

Where I live Target is to avoid the knuckle draggers in Walmart. It is the only reason to pay higher prices. Maybe in Canada there are less knuckle draggers. Seems like Target should have figured that one out...

Here too. Target is a couple steps higher than the bottom feeders at Walmart.

target stores in canada (i've been in many) are not like target stores here. they're about 1/3 the size of the american stores and have limited inventory compared to here. also, while in the u.s. target stuff is usually a step up china made crap versus walmart, in canada, it's a 1 to 1 versus walmart carp ratio. so, basically, canadian targets are 1/3 the size, with the exact same stuff as walmart, only it costs more because it's "target." it was destined to fail from the get go. i have family members and friends who are canadian that love to go to u.s. targets but who won't set foot in the canadian version.

Yep, the problem was that they bought a Cdn company, Zellers. They just changed the title on the front of the store. The shelves were 2/3 full and most of the stock as Zeller's left-overs. Poorly planned execution. They just built a new one here and it's not a bad store....
