Personally I hate the taste. When in season I buy organic apricots and peaches from a local farm here in the Magic Valley. I crack the pits with a special super strong lever nut cracker. It's a bit messy and somewhat dangerous cracking these things since the shells explode with all the pressure you put onto them trying to crack them.

Doctors in the dock: Scandal of GPs who get cash from healthcare firms for patient referrals

Jennifer and Dave Simon say their ordeal began after their daughter, Livia, went to the pediatrician’s office on January 2 for a cold. What the parents didn’t know — and what they say they heard two days later from their doctor’s office — was that a child with measles was in the office the same day.
The Simons say they were told the boy with measles had contracted the disease because his parents had refused vaccination.

Livia — who is 6 months old and too young to be vaccinated — isn’t sick, but they say they’ve feared the worst.

“We were really freaking out and really worried,” Jennifer Simon said. “I’m angry. I was upset that someone who had made a choice that they felt was a personal choice that they could make for their child had endangered my child.”

There’s no word on how many other children and their families were impacted by the doctor’s office incident, but nine infants in the county where the Simons’ live are currently in quarantine, according to an Alameda County spokesperson.

Some would benefit if they could go back ether living or experience the 1950's polio panics, seeing friends get sick with it, and dying or going to houses and hospitals that people lived in iron lungs counting on the machine to breath for them. Or the braces and wheel chairs that the less sick used to get around with. I can still remember those days and the lines of people /parents with their kids lining up for both vaccines, the sugar cube and the shot. It is refreshing today not to see iron lungs everywhere like they were back in the day, and the then helplessness people felt. When I was in school there were 5 kids that had to use wheel chairs or leg braces to get around, they all had polio in the 50's. They were the more lucky ones that caught it.

California dad asks school to bar unvaccinated children

A dad in California is asking his son’s school to consider barring unvaccinated students from attending class because of his son’s damaged immune system.

Rhett Krawitt, 6, has been battling Leukemia for the past four years. He’s in remission, but he depends on everyone around him for his protection, according to an article published on NPR’s website (http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/27/381888697/to-protect-his-son-a-father-asks-school-to-bar-unvaccinated-children).

Rhett and his father’s biggest concern is the measles, simply because of where they live.

The Krawitts live in Marin County, Calif., home to one of the highest rates of “personal belief exemptions,” meaning parents are allowed to send their children to school without vaccinations against diseases like measles, polio and whooping cough.

The superintendent they were “monitoring the situation,” NPR said.

NPR asked the county’s health officer what he thought of the Krawitt’s idea, and he said it sounded like a legal situation. However, he also said the state and the school might want to consider that action if the measles outbreak worsened.

This is not the first time Krawitt has been advocating for vaccinations. He told NPR about the time when he was at a meeting at his other child’s school and he was told not to send peanuts to school because some students may be allergic.

He found the situation to be very ironic. He told NPR what his response was at the meeting.

The most recent glaring example occurred on a small Navy ship. The Department of Defense (DOD) requires that at least 90 percent of all military installation units are injected with annual flu shots to avoid incapacitating flu breakouts within them.

The USS Ardent, a small mine countermeasures (mine sweeper) ship with a crew of 102, of whom 99 percent had received flu shots, reported a breakout of influenza with 25 crew members reporting sick with influenza like illnesses (ILI).

Tests confirmed that 20 of those in sick bay were afflicted with influenza type A, 18 with subtype H3N2. The ship, docked in San Diego, sent everyone home while thoroughly disinfecting the vessel. Tight quarters in the small ship were blamed for the event, even though virtually everyone had been given the flu shot.

The CDC actually reported this episode factually while including the propaganda that since the DODs declaration of ensuring vaccine inoculations in 1950, the military has been well protected against those diseases. There have been many breakouts of measles, whooping cough, and mumps among highly vaccinated preschool and school populations over the past few years. Those news items don’t get past local or alternative media coverages.

California dad asks school to bar unvaccinated children

MARIN COUNTY, Calif. (WKRN) –
A dad in California is asking his son’s school to consider barring unvaccinated students from attending class because of his son’s damaged immune system.

Rhett Krawitt, 6, has been battling Leukemia for the past four years. He’s in remission, but he depends on everyone around him for his protection, according to an article published on NPR’s website (http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/27/381888697/to-protect-his-son-a-father-asks-school-to-bar-unvaccinated-children).

Rhett and his father’s biggest concern is the measles, simply because of where they live.

The Krawitts live in Marin County, Calif., home to one of the highest rates of “personal belief exemptions,” meaning parents are allowed to send their children to school without vaccinations against diseases like measles, polio and whooping cough.

Rhett’s dad, Carl, told NPR (http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/27/381888697/to-protect-his-son-a-father-asks-school-to-bar-unvaccinated-children) that he’s tired of being scared to send his child to school.

“If you choose not to immunize your own child and your own child dies because they get measles, OK, that’s your responsibility, that’s your choice. But if your child gets sick and gets my child sick and my child dies, then … your action has harmed my child,” he said.



In the past, Krawitt has worked with the school’s nurse to make sure all the kids in Rhett’s class were vaccinated, but that’s become more difficult as he’s gotten older.

Krawitt emailed the school’s superintendent to see if it would be possible to require students to get vaccinations.
The superintendent they were “monitoring the situation,” NPR said.

NPR asked the county’s health officer what he thought of the Krawitt’s idea, and he said it sounded like a legal situation. However, he also said the state and the school might want to consider that action if the measles outbreak worsened.

This is not the first time Krawitt has been advocating for vaccinations. He told NPR about the time when he was at a meeting at his other child’s school and he was told not to send peanuts to school because some students may be allergic.

He found the situation to be very ironic. He told NPR what his response was at the meeting.

A five-year-old girl has died in hospital three days after developing a strain of the flu that she was vaccinated against - as a deadly outbreak of the virus continues to sweep across the country.

Keira Driscoll was prescribed steroids and a nebulizer at a Quick Care clinic after she started feeling unwell with a cough and a fever at her home in Clark County, Las Vegas, last Sunday.

But just hours later, she collapsed. Her mother, Tiffany Driscoll, frantically performed CPR on her small body, before she was rushed to hospital. There, she was found to have influenza A.

Despite medics' best efforts, Keira could not be resuscitated and she was placed on life support. On Tuesday, her parents made the heartbreaking decision to turn off the machine the next day.

In total, more than 8,000 people have been hopitalized with the flu since the start of October, with the elderly the most affected, the CDC reported.
The central states, including Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Texas, have reported the highest incidence of flu illnesses. Most of the victims have suffered from one of two influenza A strains.

This is despite, so far this season, a higher number of people having had the flu vaccine than last (40.3 per cent were vaccinated early this season, compared to 39.5 per cent early last season).

Keira's death also comes after the CDC reported last week that more than three quarters of people who had the injection - which contains strains of influenza A - this year will get the virus anyway.

Uptake: So far this season, more people have had flu injections than last season, this CDC graph shows

The percentage of effective injections - 23 per cent - is one of the worst performances since the government started tracking how well vaccines work in the 2004-2005 season.

The effectiveness has ranged from 10 to 60 per cent, the CDC said.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, there have been six flu-related deaths in Clark County this season. Four of the six were children. Last season, 109 children nationally died from flu.

To date, 56 children have died from the flu this season - and more than 8,000 across the country have been hospitalized with the virus since October 1, the CDC has said.

At the end of the year, the CDC confirmed for the first time that deaths from flu and pneumonia reached an epidemic level, comprising 6.9 per cent of all deaths.

And now, in the midst of a worrisome flu season, health officials are pushing doctors to prescribe antiviral medicines more often.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lat week sent a new alert to doctors, advising prompt use of Tamiflu and other antivirals for hospitalized flu patients and those at higher risk for complications like pneumonia.

CDC officials say a nasty strain of flu is going around that is more dangerous to elderly people and young children. Worryingly, officials think vaccines do not work well against this particular virus.

So 'it's more important than usual' that doctors treat certain patients with Tamiflu or other antiviral medications,' CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said at a press conference..

CDC research suggests doctors prescribe antivirals to one in five high-risk flu patients. However, the centers' officials say the number should be higher.
When given promptly - within two days of the beginning of flu symptoms - the antivirals can shorten the amount of time someone is sick with the flu, a number of studies have found.

The drugs also can prevent patients from becoming sick enough to end up in a hospital intensive care unit - or worse, Frieden said. 'Antiviral flu medicines save lives,' Dr Frieden said.

The CDC sent an advisory to physicians last month, warning them this could be a potentially bad flu season and encouraging prompt treatment with antivirals.

Officials said doctors should not wait for test results confirming the flu if they are dealing with an elderly patient, someone who is very sick, or someone with pre-existing medical conditions.

20 years ago, the MMR vaccine was found to infect virtually all of its recipients with measles. The manufacturer Merck's own product warning links MMR to a potentially fatal form of brain inflammation caused by measles. Why is this evidence not being reported?

The phenomenon of measles infection spread by MMR (live measles-mumps-rubella vaccine) has been known for decades. In fact, 20 years ago, scientists working at the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases, funded by the WHO and the National Vaccine Program, discovered something truly disturbing about the MMR vaccine: it leads to detectable measles infection in the vast majority of those who receive it.

Published in 1995 in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and titled, "Detection of Measles Virus RNA in Urine Specimens from Vaccine Recipients," researchers analyzed urine samples from newly MMR vaccinated 15-month-old children and young adults and reported their eye-opening results as following:

Measles virus RNA was detected in 10 of 12 children during the 2-week sampling period.
In some cases, measles virus RNA was detected as early as 1 day or as late as 14 days after the children were vaccinated.
Measles virus RNA was also detected in the urine samples from all four of the young adults between 1 and 13 days after vaccination.

The authors of this study used a relatively new technology at that time, namely, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which they believed could help resolve growing challenges associated with measles detection in the shifting post-mass immunization epidemiological and clinical landscape. These challenges include:

A changing clinical presentation towards 'milder' or asymptomatic measles in previously vaccinated individuals.
A changing epidemiological distribution of measles (a shift toward children younger than 15 months, teenagers, and young adults)
Increasing difficulty distinguishing measles-like symptoms (exanthema) caused by a range of other pathogens from those caused by measles virus.
An increase in sporadic measles outbreaks in previously vaccinated individuals.

Twenty years later, PCR testing is widely acknowledged as highly sensitive and specific, and the only efficient way to distinguish vaccine-strain and wild-type measles infection, as their clinical presentation are indistinguishable.

The urban poor in the United States are experiencing accelerated aging at the cellular level, and chronic stress linked both to income level and racial-ethnic identity is driving this physiological deterioration.

These are among the findings published this week by a group of prominent biologists and social researchers, including a Nobel laureate. Dr. Arline Geronimus, a visiting scholar at the Stanford Center for Advanced Study and the lead author of the study, described it as the most rigorous research of its kind examining how "structurally rooted social processes work through biological mechanisms to impact health."

What They Found

Researchers analyzed telomeres of poor and lower middle-class black, white, and Mexican residents of Detroit. Telomeres are tiny caps at the ends of DNA strands, akin to the plastic caps at the end of shoelaces, that protect cells from aging prematurely. Telomeres naturally shorten as people age. But various types of intense chronic stress are believed to cause telomeres to shorten, and short telomeres are associated with an array of serious ailments including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Evidence increasingly points to telomere length being highly predictive of healthy life expectancy. Put simply, "the shorter your telomeres, the greater your chance of dying."

The new study found that low-income residents of Detroit, regardless of race, have significantly shorter telomeres than the national average. "There are effects of living in high-poverty, racially segregated neighborhoods -- the life experiences people have, the physical exposures, a whole range of things -- that are just not good for your health," Geronimus said in an interview with The Huffington Post............

Chemotherapy Drugs are Killing up to 50% of Cancer Patients

Patients should be warned about the dangers of chemotherapy after research showed that cancer drugs are killing up to 50 per cent of patients in some hospitals.

For the first time researchers looked at the numbers of cancer patients who died within 30 days of starting chemotherapy, which indicates that the medication is the cause of death, rather than the cancer.

The study by Public Health England and Cancer Research UK found that across England around 8.4 per cent of patients with lung cancer, and 2.4 per cent of breast cancer patients died within a month.

But in some hospitals the figure was far higher. In Milton Keynes the death rate for lung cancer treatment was 50.9 per cent, although it was based on a very small number of patients.

Oh well we don't have death panels yet per se...except I don't think so. This is a very complex, nuanced and controversial subject that we are all going to come to terms with soon. Because I think healthcare finance is hitting a ceiling in that it is impoverishing working families via high premiums and enormous deductables. Went in spitting up blood after some anomolie, a few (4) broken ribs. "M-caid did the rest, probably too many x-rays and scans and no follow up cause I don't have a reg doc. Went and got med records but basically fucking useless. Prob cost upwards hundred K when all I needed to know was why spitting blood. Seems the basic x-rays showed it all which I cant view on their medisystem software. So with a single x-ray they could see the issue but continued with repettative x-rays and CT scans that were completely un-needed.

When taken orally, massive quantities of vitamin C are either broken down or excreted unused by the body. In contrast, intravenous administration of vitamin C produces blood levels 100 to 500 times higher than oral administration.

This could explain why many clinical trials on vitamin C and cancer — most of which have used oral administration — failed to support the results seen in laboratory studies using cancer cells.

Surprisingly, the most recent study on the topic from researchers at the University of Iowa (UI), published in the journal Redox Biology, suggests that vitamin C’s cancer-fighting potential might come not from its antioxidant capabilities, as previously assumed. On the contrary, vitamin C appears to generate free radicals that tear apart cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Targeting a weakness of cancer cells

In prior research, the same scientists found that high-dose vitamin C selectively killed cancer cells in the laboratory, and had the same effect in mice … if the vitamin C was administered intravenously. In the new study, researchers sought to discover the causes behind this effect.

They found that in the body, vitamin C quickly breaks down, generating the free radical hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. This is a paradoxical effect, because free radicals are the very cell- and DNA-damaging chemicals that antioxidants such as vitamin C remove from the body.

But the researchers further found that healthy cells seemed to have defensive mechanisms that easily allowed them to resist the oxidizing effects of hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide is, in fact, used as a defense mechanism by the body’s own immune system). Tumor cells, however, were much more likely to be damaged and destroyed by the chemical.

“In this paper we demonstrate that cancer cells are much less efficient in removing hydrogen peroxide than normal cells. Thus, cancer cells are much more prone to damage and death from a high amount of hydrogen peroxide,” lead researcher Garry Buettner said.

“This explains how the very, very high levels of vitamin C used in our clinical trials do not affect normal tissue, but can be damaging to tumor tissue.”
Treatment on the horizon?

The researchers found that healthy cells use various mechanisms to remove hydrogen peroxide, and that one of the primary mechanisms is the enzyme catalase. They found that the lower cells’ catalase activity, the more damage they suffered from hydrogen peroxide exposure.

“Our results suggest that cancers with low levels of catalase are likely to be the most responsive to high-dose vitamin C therapy, whereas cancers with relatively high levels of catalase may be the least responsive,” Buettner said.

The researchers are planning future research to develop ways to measure tumors’ catalase levels and test this hypothesis further.

A 2015 study published in the journal Science found that in colorectal cancer cells with particular cell growth-related mutations, vitamin C induces oxidative stress and shuts down an enzyme that the cells use for reproduction. This finding was particularly promising, since cancer cells with this mutation are almost entirely immune to chemotherapy.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announces that substances found in palm oil raise a potential health concern. They identified one component of palm oil as “geotoxic and carcinogenic.” This information is critical because palm oil is the most heavily utilized vegetable oils, and many people are unaware that palm oil is used in about half of all packaged foods, personal care products and cleaning products.

In 2013, producers used 58 million metric tons of palm oil, up from 50 million in 2010. Palm oil is popular largely because oil palm is the most efficient industrial vegetable oil crop, making it the least expensive for corporations making consumer products.

In 2016, the EFSA conducted an assessment of three potential food contaminants: glycidyl fatty acid esters (GE), 3-monochloropropanediol (3-MCPD), and 2-monochloropropanediol (2-MCPD). These substances are present in many different oils and fats, although, the highest levels of GE, 3-MCPD, and 2-MCPD are found in palm oil and palm fats. They form during food processing, particularly when refining oils at high temperatures.


The Palm Oil Industry

Palm oil is used in many household products, including foods such as peanut butter, margarine and many processed foods. It is also present in personal products such as shampoos and toothpaste, and over the last few decades, the markets for processed foods and low-cost personal care products grew considerably. As a result, so did the demand for cheap palm oil.

Producers turned to palm oil for a good reason. The oil palm is the most efficient vegetable oil crop in the world. One hectare of land can yield about 3.7 tons of palm oil per year, compared to 0.48 tons of sunflower or 0.38 tons of soybean oil, making palm oil far cheaper than any other vegetable oil.

Sadly, the cost to producers does not take into account the environmental damage cased by oil palm cultivation, and as a result, corporate giants, such as Pepsico, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive and many others, have played a key role in the environmental devastation taking place in Indonesia and Malaysia, as well as Latin America and Africa.

Oil palm production is responsible for massive deforestation, land use disputes with indigenous populations, and complete destruction of tropical ecosystems. A dad in California is asking his son’s school to consider barring unvaccinated students from attending class because of his son’s damaged immune system.

Rhett Krawitt, 6, has been battling Leukemia for the past four years. He’s in remission, but he depends on everyone around him for his protection, according to an article published on NPR’s website (http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/27/381888697/to-protect-his-son-a-father-asks-school-to-bar-unvaccinated-children).

Rhett and his father’s biggest concern is the measles, simply because of where they live.

The Krawitts live in Marin County, Calif., home to one of the highest rates of “personal belief exemptions,” meaning parents are allowed to send their children to school without vaccinations against diseases like measles, polio and whooping cough.

Rhett’s dad, Carl, told NPR (http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/01/27/381888697/to-protect-his-son-a-father-asks-school-to-bar-unvaccinated-children) that he’s tired of being scared to send his child to school.

In the past, Krawitt has worked with the school’s nurse to make sure all the kids in Rhett’s class were vaccinated, but that’s become more difficult as he’s gotten older.

Krawitt emailed the school’s superintendent to see if it would be possible to require students to get vaccinations.
The superintendent they were “monitoring the situation,” NPR said.

NPR asked the county’s health officer what he thought of the Krawitt’s idea, and he said it sounded like a legal situation. However, he also said the state and the school might want to consider that action if the measles outbreak worsened.

This is not the first time Krawitt has been advocating for vaccinations. He told NPR about the time when he was at a meeting at his other child’s school and he was told not to send peanuts to school because some students may be allergic.

He found the situation to be very ironic. He told NPR what his response was at the meeting.

Its a cumulative lifetime risk, not an annual incidence. So over the course of the lifetime, approx. 70% of men and 50% of women will develop cancer. The FDA received a total of 179,855 reports of serious, disabling and fatal drug interactions in the U.S. in 2011, a significant 9.4 percent increase (15,386 more cases) from 2010. (Natural News) Over 100,000 patients are suing Johnson & Johnson and their pharmaceutical division Janssen for damages resulting from the use of the drug Risperdal. The lawsuits stem from evidence that taking the drug has caused male patients to suffer from the condition gynecomastia, which causes not only significant weight gain but also the development of breasts. There is also substantial evidence that the company was aware of these adverse effects and did not properly warn the public.

Risperdal has been prescribed by doctors to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents, bipolar disorder in adults and children between the ages of 10-17, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) sufferers of various ages, and for dementia-related psychosis in elderly adults. The FDA approved the drug in 1993 for adults, but it wasn’t until 2006 that it received approval to sell the medication to children. Evidence has shown that J&J was aware that the drug could cause breast development in children and young adults, particularly males, as early as 2001. That did not stop the company however from aggressively marketing the drug to child psychiatrists and others treating children beginning in 1999. Warning on safety labels for the drugs did not appear until 2006. Johnson&Johnson also chose not strengthen Risperdal labels to warn of gynecomastia risks, despite calls from doctors to do so. Gynecomastia is the result of a hormone imbalance, and it is believed that Risperdal may trigger the condition because it increases levels of prolactin, which is the same hormone that stimulates female breast development and lactation.

Half the women getting bilateral mastectomies in America do not need one - their doctor misread their genetic test data, a bombshell new study claims.

The rate of women getting preventative mastectomies has sky-rocketed since Angelina Jolie's 2013 op-ed about genetic testing for cancer risk.

The actress revealed she chose to have both breasts removed, since a test showed she carried the faulty BRCA1 gene which increases one's risk of breast cancer by 87 percent.

In the four years since, millions of American women have followed suit - rushing to get tested, and - in many cases - proceeding to get their breasts removed.

Millions of women have rushed to get testing of their own, and many have had their breasts removed as a result. But new research from Stanford University School of Medicine has shown that many of these women went under the knife for one simple reason — and it wasn’t cancer. In fact, it is supposedly because their doctors had “misunderstood” their genetic testing panels. Indeed, the scientists say that approximately half of all women who had their breasts removed didn’t need to have the surgery at all.

As the study from Stanford University explains, a surprising number of women undergoing bilateral mastectomies — or the removal of both breasts — don’t actually have the genetic mutations linked to an increased risk of cancer. According to the researchers, the increased accessibility and affordability of genetic testing has come with consequences: Genetic testing results have become more confusing than ever. Why? Because now, gene panels can test for a host of different genetic mutations or variations, and those results can be hard to understand if you don’t have a trained genetic counselor to assist with interpreting the data.

To conduct their research, the team looked at a survey of 2,000 women — and found that 50 percent of patients had genetic “variants of uncertain significance” or VUS. Most often, these mutations are not harmful.

Allison Kurian, MD, associate professor of medicine and of health research and policy at Stanford says that their data “suggest a limited understanding among physicians and patients of the meaning of genetic testing results.” Experts seem to agree, and note that the research underscores a need for genetic counselors to help both doctors and patients to understand the results from genetic testing. This would be plausible, if not for the fact that many doctors have admitted to treating patients with VUS the same as they would a patient with a cancer-causing gene.
