CAMBRIDGE, England (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a likely Republican candidate for president, said Monday that parents should have some choice on whether to vaccinate their children.

Christie's comments, made after a tour of a biomedical research center during a three-day trade mission to the United Kingdom, come as a measles outbreak centered in California has sickened more than 100 people in the U.S.
Christie said that he and his wife had vaccinated their children, describing that decision as "the best expression I can give you of my opinion." He said they believe doing so is an "important part of making sure we protect their health and the public health."
"But," Christie added, "I also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So that's the balance that the government has to decide."
A few hours after Christie spoke, his office said in a statement that the governor "believes vaccines are an important public health protection and with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated."
All states now require children to get certain vaccinations to enroll in school, although California and New Jersey are among 20 states that let parents opt out by obtaining personal belief waivers. Parents in New Jersey seeking a medical exemption have to submit a written statement from their doctor or registered nurse indicating why the exemption is needed.

Some people worry that vaccines can cause developmental problems in children, despite scientific evidence disproving any link. Others object for religious or philosophical reasons. The New Jersey health department's guidelines on vaccines say that objections "based on grounds which are not medical or religious in nature and which are of a philosophical, moral, secular, or more general nature continue to be unacceptable."
Christie's comments stand in contrast to those of President Barack Obama, who said in an interview with NBC News that all parents should get their kids vaccinated. Those children who are not, he said, put infants and those who can't get vaccinations at risk.
"I understand that there are families that, in some cases, are concerned about the effect of vaccinations," Obama said. "The science is, you know, pretty indisputable."
The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, commonly called the MMR, is 97 percent effective at preventing measles, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New Jersey requires MMR vaccines for children between 12 and 15 months, and then a second at between 4 and 6 years.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air, with symptoms that include fever, runny nose and a blotchy rash. The current outbreak originated at Disney theme parks last month, and Mexico and at least six other U.S. states have recorded measles cases connected to Disneyland.

When asked by reporters in Cambridge, after touring the facilities of MedImmune, the manufacturer of the flu vaccine FluMist, if leaving parents with the option to pass on vaccinations for their children is dangerous, Christie said there "has to be a balance."
"It depends on what the vaccine is, what the disease type is and all the rest," he said. "And so I didn't say I'm leaving people the option. What I'm saying is that you have to have that balance in considering parental concerns."
Christie said the conversation about whether to vaccinate needs to include the type of disease at issue. He said "not every vaccine is created equal. And not every disease type is as great a public health threat as others."
The American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents to get their children vaccinated against measles and other childhood diseases. It says doctors should bring up the importance of vaccinations during visits if parents are reluctant, but should respect a parent's wishes unless there's a significant risk to the child.
"In general, pediatricians should avoid discharging patients from their practices solely because a parent refuses to immunize his or her child," according to guidelines issued by the group.

Some people worry that vaccines can cause developmental problems in children, despite scientific evidence disproving any link.

I guess AP missed the news about the CDC whistle blower talking about them omitting data that would indicate that there is a link. Or how Merck is currently being sued for overstating the very vaccine they want everyone to gets efficiency.... Nah can't have that. Hey guys want some kool-aid it sure taste good.

He mentioned that the Hepatitis B vaccine is given to newborns to prevent a disease that can be transmitted via sexual interactions or blood transfusions

This one in particular chaps my hide because they tried to spring this shit on my Wee One when she was a scant few hours old

It went like this

What is that?

Hep B vaccine

Why

It proctects against STD's and blood transfusions

Well since i havent taken my eye off her since she was snatched from her momma belly i am certain of 2 things: she is not sexually active and nobody gave her a transfusion so there is no need , i respectfully decline this shot.

Blink,blink,blink

I cheerfully signed a declnation form and that was the end of it.

They did attempt a counter attack 3 of the wellness visits but i was ready i was polite but firm that i wanted to delay and i kept on delaying until we got the hell away from them

They snuck one vitamin k shot by me but im pleased to annouce thats all they got.

Hillary Clinton weighed in on the national debate over children's vaccinations (http://news.yahoo.com/us-measles-outbreak-growing-cdc-says-212110483.html) amid a measles outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people in the United States, posting a message on her Twitter feed late Monday.

The former secretary of state and possible 2016 Democratic presidential candidate distanced herself from potential Republican hopefuls, including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul.
Earlier Monday, Paul told CNBC that parents "should have some input" (http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000351424) whether or not to vaccinate their children, saying it is "an issue of freedom."
"I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines," he said.

Speaking in England, Christie said parents should have a "measure of choice" (http://news.yahoo.com/gops-christie-parents-choice-vaccinations-135148862--politics.html) whether to vaccinate their children. The New Jersey governor's office quickly clarified his statements, saying "with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated."
President Barack Obama waded into the debate Monday, too (http://news.yahoo.com/obama-measles-beheading-super-bowl-interview-video-144320454.html), saying parents have “every reason” to vaccinate their children against measles.
“You should get your kids vaccinated,” Obama told Savannah Guthrie during an interview broadcast on NBC’s “Today” show Monday. “It’s good for them.”
Obama echoed the message from American health professionals urging parents not to listen to anti-vaccination activists who have convinced some parents not to inoculate their children by claiming the vaccines can cause autism.
“I understand that there are families that in some cases are concerned about the effect of vaccinations,” Obama said. “The science is, you know, pretty indisputable. We’ve looked at this again and again. There is every reason to get vaccinated, but there aren’t reasons to not.”

Measles was once common in the United States but declined significantly because of higher vaccination rates. By 2000, the highly contagious disease had been declared officially eradicated from the United States.
“We should be able to get back to the point where measles effectively is not existing in this country,” the president said.
On Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner was asked if Congress should have a role in the debate.
"I don't know that we need another law," Boehner said (http://news.yahoo.com/house-speaker-boehner-children-ought-vaccinated-154243993.html), "but I do believe that all children ought to be vaccinated."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the current measles outbreak, which began in California, has sickened more than 100 people in 14 states.
Of the 34 people for whom the California Department of Public Health had vaccination records, only 5 had received both doses of the measles vaccine, ABC News reported (http://news.yahoo.com/us-measles-outbreak-growing-cdc-says-212110483.html).
"This is not a problem with the measles vaccine not working," Dr. Anne Schuchat, director at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said last week. "This is a problem of the measles vaccine not being used."

Oakland Co. judge to decide if parents must vaccinate their 4 children

Posted: Feb 05, 2015 9:14 AM EST Updated: Feb 05, 2015 9:21 AM EST By myFOXDetroit.com StaffConnect (http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/28032396/oakland-co-judge-to-decide-if-parents-must-vaccinate-their-4-children#)

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Can parents' wishes about their child's vaccinations be overruled by a judge? A local court case could soon answer that question.

A Highland Township couple is in the process of a permanent wardship case involving their four children. The reasons for the termination of their parental rights was not discussed by the father's lawyer, Daniel Bagdade, but the reason is not related to the vaccination issue.

However, social workers recently learned the children haven't been vaccinated against the measles and are now asking an Oakland County judge to step in.

"A motion has been filed by the children's attorney before the judge, asking that the judge force these parents to vaccinate the children," Bagdade told FOX 2. "The reason that this is so unusual is that, as far as we know, it's the first time anywhere that this is being asked."

Bagdade says his client and his client's wife opted out of the vaccine with concerns that it causes autism.

"The people [my client] talked to had children who were suffering from autism. The parents of those children all told him that they felt the reason their children were suffering from autism was because of the vaccination from measles," Bagdade says.

No medical link has been definitively proven between the measles vaccine and autism.

Right now, Michigan law does allow parents to opt out of vaccines for personal or religious beliefs.

The case goes before the judge next Wednesday.

The national debate over the measles vaccination has heated up over the past few weeks as the number of people sickened by the measles continues to increase, including the case of one adult in Oakland County.

A majority of the confirmed cases are in California and have been linked (http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/27989597/more-measles-cases-found-in-california) to visits to Disneyland.

Measles, which is spread through the air, is highly contagious. Symptoms include fever, runny nose and a blotchy rash.

This issue in time probably will end up in the highest court!

Have always believed vaccinations do good for the vast majority. I personally believe and take them, some by no choice while in the military!

But also knew that they were a crap shoot, because some would have bad reactions because no vaccine is 100% safe for everyone, just like peanut butter, most love it but it can kill some that are exposed to it.

This issue is a sorta catch 22 in many ways!

I wonder if the supreme court will touch this one no matter the pole length?

Edit: I am all for choice, but I do have issues if their choices effect others, sad if their own kids get sick or worse, because they do not vaccinate but that is their choice and they (parents) must live with the consequences the rest of their life's if their kids die or are crippled.

Most kids will survive some will not, depending on the virus/sickness.

But dam them if the choice effects others that are too young or sick for vaccinations and die because they caught it from a non-vaccination carrier. Believe there are common responsibility's that all must share for life in any civilization, its not everyone looking out for themselves only.
