Parent: Fourth-grader suspended after using magic from 'The Hobbit' (http://www.oaoa.com/news/education/article_6b47c224-a8d2-11e4-8989-1f5b0d13dadd.html)

A Kermit parent said his fourth-grade student was suspended Friday for allegedly making a terroristic threat.
His father, Jason Steward, said the family had been to see “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” last weekend. His son brought a ring to his class at Kermit Elementary School and told another boy his magic ring could make the boy disappear.
Steward said the principal said threats to another child’s safety would not be tolerated – whether magical or not. Principal Roxanne Greer declined to comment on the matter.
“All student stuff is confidential,” Greer said. She referred a call from the Odessa American to Kermit ISD Superintendent Bill Boyd, who did not return a phone call.
Steward said he didn’t understand why his son was removed from school and why the district didn’t just send a letter home.
He said he requested that the school send him “something in writing” saying that the school suspended his son and why they suspended him. Steward was told the school would put the letter in the mail.
Steward said his son has attended Kermit Elementary since August. The 9-year-old has been in in-school suspension for referring to another student’s skin color and got in trouble for bringing a kids’ book about pregnancy to school.

State Senator Says All White People Are Racist and ‘Polluted’ His Blood (http://watchdog.org/196917/ernie-chambers-2/)
Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers said all white people are racist and that his blood was “polluted” by white people last week while filibustering a bill and lambasting a state education board member who has rejected calls for his resignation after his blog called the president a “half-breed.”
Chambers, a 77-year-old African American senator who is the state’s longest serving lawmaker, made the comments about race while filibustering a bill that would increase the fee for marriage licenses.

Saint Louis University to Erect Monument Honoring Anti-Police Protest (http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/21099/)
Saint Louis University has commissioned a sculpture to be erected on campus that administrators say they hope “captures the spirit and importance” of a weeklong “Occupy SLU” protest last fall on the urban campus that decried oppression, racism, racial profiling and police tactics.
For six days in mid-October, community activists refused to leave the St. Louis campus in a protest intended as an extension of the summertime riots that had wracked nearby Ferguson over the police shooting of Michael Brown.
Three social justice groups–Tribe X, the Metro St. Louis Coalition for Inclusion and Equality, and the Black Student Alliance–took over the campus and lived in tents around its clock tower.
Flying an upside-down American flag, they gave speeches and “teach ins” on topics such as “conscious awakening, systematic oppression, white supremacy, and students’ responsibility to the community,”according (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFsfWn3FBf0) to a YouTube video that documented the demonstration.
The demonstrators left only after the university agreed to all 13 of their demands (http://www.slu.edu/Documents/demonstration/Agreement.pdf), one of which was a “mutually agreed upon commissioned artwork.”
That agreement (http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/19805/) has now been dubbed the “Clock Tower Accords” by campus leaders of the private, Jesuit university, who recently announced (http://www.slu.edu/x100326.xml) they have “commissioned renowned African American artists and sculptors Kyle and Kelly Phelps to design a sculpture that captures the spirit and importance of the demonstration and encampment at Saint Louis University on October 13-18, 2014.”

Lawmakers Trying To Pass Bill Exempting Politicians From Arrest And Prosecution For Corruption (http://countercurrentnews.com/2015/02/lawmakers-trying-to-pass-bill-exempting-politicians-from-arrest-and-prosecution-for-corruption/)
Taking payoffs, breaking the law and pushing through unconstitutional legislation as special favors to corporate interests has long been par for the course in politics. But now Representative Kevin Calvey (R – Oklahoma City) wants to make it official and make it illegal to arrest any state officials accused of a public offense.
Representative Calvey has introduced House Bill 2206, which would prohibit Oklahoma’s district attorneys from prosecuting state officials, granting that power exclusively to the state’s Attorney General. This would exempt lawmakers from prosecution of nearly any crimes that are normally handled at the local level.
The bill proposes the following:
“The jurisdiction of a prosecution against a principal in the commission of a public offense, when such principal is a state elected official, state legislator, district court judicial officer, appellate judicial officer or an appointee of a state board or state commission at the time of the commission of the offense, is within the sole and exclusive prosecutorial authority of the Attorney General of Oklahoma. Such an action must be filed in the county of residence of the state officer.”
“It’s a big deal to me. I’m upset and concerned,” Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater explained. “This bill creates a different class of citizens that would be protected from the normal prosecution process.”
“I am suspicious … that is what this is really about,” Prater added.
Rep. Calvey, said that he filed the bill because there is “malicious prosecution” of politicians. He cited the prosecution in Texas of former Gov. Rick Perry. But Calvey is in Oklahoma, and Perry is no longer in office, though he is fighting an abuse-of-power indictment that he says is politically motivated.
While Calvey says he doesn’t think anything “so outrageous” would happen in Oklahoma, he adds “who knows who will get elected to those offices in the future? I do think it’s just better to prevent that kind of thing from ever arising… The point is to not allow a locally elected official to effectively have undue influence over statewide policy.”
The bill never goes into specifics on what would be considered a public offense, thus providing immunity to lawmakers for nearly any criminal activity at the local level. Since Calvey himself acknowledges that the point would be to avoid legislators or politicians from being prosecuted for abuse-of-power, this bill proposes to set forth a very dangerous precedence that could lead to even less accountability for politicians.

A Krispy Kreme store in England found itself in hot water after launching a promotion billed as "KKK Wednesday."
The store, located in Hull along England's east coast, had advertised Feb. 18 as KKK Wednesday, with the K's intended to stand for "Krispy Kreme Klub." The promotion went up on the Krispy Kreme UK Facebook page Tuesday until it was brought to the company's attention that "KKK" also stood for the Ku Klux Klan.

Prank call leads to heavy destruction of Circle K store (http://www.fox10phoenix.com/story/28155627/2015/02/20/prank-call-leads-to-heavy-destruction-of-circle-k-store)
GLOBE, Ariz. - Windows broken, merchandise destroyed; a Circle K store was left so damaged it was forced to close.
It wasn't the work of vandals; it was done by store employees.
Police say the employees thought they were following instructions from a security company, but it was a prank call.
It's a bizarre story that left a convenience store in ruins.
It sounds like a scene out of a movie, but it did happen.
Globe Police say the joke went too far, and it's no laughing matter.
"I couldn't believe the damage that I'd seen today, it was rediculous," said Lorraine Phillips.
The store was boarded up, but open for business.
It wasn't a force of nature, but rather two gullible employees who worked for the store.
The prankster called in and posed as Circle K corporate security, they claimed a fire alarm was going off and he instructed the employees to do certain things to stop the alarm.
"The first thing they asked him to do was discharge a fire extinguishers inside the fire, which apparently did not raise any alarms when they did that. Even though there were customers inside the store," said a spokesperson with the Globe Police Department.
The caller then went on to tell them to throw the extinguishers through the windows, which they did.
"They finally ordered them to break the computer which is kind of when the light bulb went off that this is a prank call... unfortunately it didn't go off any sooner, and the store employees caused a significant amount of damage to the store," he said.
Circle K Corporate asked FOX 10, not to run this story. Globe Police are investigating the prank, but they could only shake their heads in wonder, and wonder why they did what they did.
"I think whoever did it should be ashamed of what they had done, and whoever made that call should pay for what they did," said Phillips.
It's unclear whether both store clerks kept their jobs; police are trying to trace the call and track down the pranksters.

NY Senator Who Pushed Gun Control, Now Pushing Machete Control (http://NY Senator Who Pushed Gun Control, Now Pushing Machete Control)
New York state senator Tony Avella (D-Queens) successfully pushed gun control via the SAFE Act in early 2013 and he has now set his sights on machete control.
Avella said, “The fact that anyone can purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy.”
According to New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/state-sen-tony-avella-ban-machetes-new-york-article-1.2120874), while smaller knives–“switchblades and gravity knives”–have already been banned in New York, “machetes are considered the same as butcher knives” and have therefore remained legal. But Avella will soon introduce legislation to reverse that.
If passed and signed into law, “the mere possession of a machete could lead to years behind bars.”
Avella’s efforts come after two machete attacks–one in July and another October. The one in July resulted in the death of 17-year-old Long Island teen Terrence Grier.
Grier’s mom, Greta Price, says her son “would still be alive today if it wasn’t for a machete.”
As long as they don't go for the corn knives.

Parents who let kids walk home alone found responsible for 'unsubstantiated' neglect (http://www.11alive.com/story/news/2015/03/04/parents-who-let-kids-walk-home-alone-found-responsible-for-unsubstantiated-child-neglect/24363503/)
The Maryland parents under investigation over letting their children walk home by themselves have been found "responsible for unsubstantiated child neglect" by local child protective services.Danielle and Alexander Meitiv said they received a letter last weekend notifying them of the Feb. 20 decision in a case that has garnered national debate over parenting styles and philosophy. They plan to appeal the finding but said they first consulted with an attorney before commenting publicly Monday.
Officials began investigating Meitiv and her husband after someone called police last Dec. 20 to report that their children — Rafi, 10, and Dvora, 6 — were walking home from a playground about a mile away from their house in Silver Spring, a Maryland suburb outside Washington, D.C.
Police had also received an anonymous call about the kids two months earlier, on Oct. 27, after the kids were playing at a closer park, just blocks away from their home. That case was later dropped by CPS.
A finding of "unsubstantiated" child neglect is essentially a middle ground of three possible findings local child protective service departments can reach; the other two are "ruled out" or "indicated." It indicates there may be some evidence but not enough information to prove neglect occurred. An "unsubstantiated" case remains in the state's database for five years and then is expunged — if no additional reports are added to the file.
"If it doesn't mean anything, then they should close the case," Danielle Meitiv told TODAY.com. "I don't want there to be a file. We never should have been on their radar in the first place. We shouldn't be in their system at all and certainly not with some allegation of neglect, whether substantiated or not."
Montgomery County Child Protective Services referred calls to state officials. A spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Human Resources said she could not comment on specific cases because of confidentiality rules.
Meitiv, a science consultant and writer, said she and her husband, a physicist at the National Institute of Health, do not plan to change their parenting style, which they believe helps their children better learn independence.
I think we had a thread on this when the story first came out, but this qualifies for stupid.

2 SU students charged in hazing that could cost pledge 4 fingers (http://www.syracuse.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/03/1805_e_colvin_st_syracuse_university_fraternity_ha zing_three_pledging_members_of.html)
Syracuse University suspended the fraternity Monday, an official said. (http://www.syracuse.com/health/index.ssf/2015/03/syracuse_university_suspends_fraternity_over_hazin g_incident.html)
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse police have charged two Syracuse fraternity members in a hazing incident that could cost a pledge four fingers. Tae Kim, 19, of 401 Euclid Ave, and Jeffrey Yam, 21, of 1111 Madison St., are charged with misdemeanor first-degree hazing.
Police said three pledges at Nu Alpha Phi fraternity were forced to do aerobic exercises at 12 a.m. Sunday at Lower Hookway Park at 1805 E. Colvin St. The pledges were being punished for not doing their chores properly, police said.
A 20-year-old pledge told police they spent about 30 minutes doing push ups, sit ups and crawling exercises in the snow, instead of the fraternity's attic of 739 Ackerman Ave., where punishments usually take place. He said they were wearing hooded sweatshirts, pants, boots and no gloves.
When the exercises were done, the pledge said they were given hand warmers and told to walk back to the fraternity. The victim said he went home and ran his hands under warm water, but they still hurt.
He went to Crouse Hospital the next day when the pain didn't stop. He was told he has severe frostbite and could lose four fingers -- his ring and pinkie fingers on both hands.
The victim reported the incident to Syracuse University Department of Public Safety who turned over the case to Syracuse police.
Syracuse Police Detective Joseph White led an investigation until Wednesday, when a search warrant was issued at the fraternity house and Kim and Yam were taken into custody.
They were issued appearance tickets.
Police said the other two pledges refused to cooperate with the investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Syracuse police at 442-5222.

In Italy, They're Now Taxing Shadows (http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-03-20/italy-theyre-now-taxing-shadows)
As Greece struggles to convince the world it’s serious about adopting a series of reforms designed to bolster its economy including cracking down on rampant tax evasion, the Syriza government may want to look to Italy for creative ideas on how to boost government revenue. As Italian newspaper Leggo reports (http://www.leggo.it/NEWS/ITALIA/tassa_tende_ombra_conegliano/notizie/1249598.shtml), store owners in Conegliano are now faced with the unfortunate (albeit comically absurd) proposition of paying taxes on shadows.
The rationale appears to go something like this: an awning casts a shadow on public property and therefore you must pay to use that property. Here’s more:
Via Google Translate:
CONEGLIANO - is another incoming wave of taxes for merchants Conegliano that this time they have to pay the tax "on the shadow."
At first glance it might seem a joke, but it's one of those imposts hidden (but then not so) in the folds of the Italian rules. If a store or a bar has an awning outside the shadowing on public property, must pay a fee that is part of the public land use, tax on employment of public land. While employment is obviously only virtual. "It's absurd - says Mathias Doimo, owner of the grocery store" La Dispensa "via Vital -. We will pay for this too, but not really talk about it. It's a shame.
Mathias, 31, has taken over the shop in 2008. Outside, to protect the window from the sun so that the foodstuffs are not directly exposed to light, has installed a curtain of four square meters. A few days ago he received from Abaco, the company that manages the tax on behalf of the City, the payment request. The tax is charged at EUR 8.40 per square meter and the fee is calculated based on the area of ??the tent. In his case the tent is 4 square meters, and has to pay 33.6 euro that comes with various rounding to 34 euro.
The best thing about this policy (if you’re the government) is that taken to its logical extreme, you could charge everyone a fee on sunny days as unless you’re a vampire, you probably are using public land by casting a shadow. We would also note that this gives new meaning to the term "shadow banking."

House Dem Warns Climate Change Will Force Millions Of Poor Women To Engage In ‘Transactional Sex’ (http://washington.cbslocal.com/2015/03/26/house-dem-warns-climate-change-will-force-millions-of-poor-women-to-engage-in-transactional-sex/)
Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., proposed a resolution Wednesday that warns climate change and ensuing natural disasters will force millions of vulnerable and poverty-stricken women to engage in “transactional sex” in order to provide their families with adequate food and water. Lee’s House Concurrent Resolution 29 says that food and water scarcity will be exacerbated by the effects of climate change, forcing increased “conflict and instability” that will particularly affect the strain on women farmers “who are estimated to produce 60 to 80 percent of the food in most developing countries.”
“[F]ood insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,” reads the resolution.
The resolution calls attention to ways that women are vulnerable to climate change, specifically in poor and developing countries. It states that it will become more difficult for women to grow and collect food and water for their families and natural disasters driven by climate change will push many women and children into becoming refugees.
Lee’s resolution concluded by urging Congress to acknowledge the “disparate impacts of climate change on women,” and should use “gender-sensitive frameworks in developing policies to address climate change.”
The resolution notes several United Nations statistics, including data showing that “the number of people living in extreme poverty could increase by up to 3,000,000,000 by 2050 unless environmental disasters are averted by coordinated global action.”
Lee proposed a similar piece of legislation in 2013 with 11 co-sponsors, although House Concurrent Resolution 36 was ultimately quashed.
“Food-insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs [sexually transmitted infections], unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,” according to the 2013 resolution.

This one is certainly up there in the hall of fame stakes. There are no such things as statistics for something that has not happened yet. Statistics refer to something that has actually happened. How they are interpreted is key.
Numbers that refer to some future event are called Probability or Possibility but not statistics. Probability generally incorporates some known historical incident(s) and extrapolates from that. Possibility on the other hand is what Politicians use and is most easily correlated to what ever it is that is hiding under your bed at night or what you are told is hiding under your bed.

Once upon a time on another forum I was in a debate with someone who claimed he was a medical Dr. In the discussion he related a UN paper claiming that vaccinations had saved many lives in third world countries. But statistics was not available for the third world nations, so instead the claimed lives saved were instead based on models stating that x amount of lives were saved on y amount of vaccination doses.
Funnily despite me showing him the illogic of claiming x amounts lives saved from vaccinations from a model stating that this many will be saved because they were vaccinated, not because of real data. He could see no problem with the so called 'research'. They, the UN, weren't even extrapolating lives saved from a smaller trial, it was just assumed they were by the shot. No doubt this UN paper has been used to prove the efficiency of vaccination, but really it is just a perfect example of circular reasoning...

Driver claims she got $200 ticket for putting on lip balm behind the wheel (http://www.8newsnow.com/story/28711565/driver-gets-200-ticket-for-putting-on-lip-balm-behind-the-wheel)
The Nevada Highway Patrol has a campaign to crackdown on distracted drivers, but how far is too far when it comes to cracking the whip? 8 News NOW decided to examine that question after a Las Vegas woman said she received a ticket from a Boulder City police officer for putting on lip balm at a red light.Stephanie Fragoso said she was cited Wednesday during the statewide crackdown. She said she was at a red light at I-15 and Blue Diamond when it happened.
Fragoso said when she asked the officer why he pulled her over, he told her it was for putting on makeup.
"I told him it was Chapstick,” Fragoso said.
Initially, Fragoso thought the entire thing was a joke, especially since it was April Fools Day, but when she received the citation, she quickly realized that wasn't the case.
“He said 'it could have been anything; you could have been drinking water, shaving your legs',” said Fragoso.
Law enforcement officers say drivers can be ticketed for any distraction that takes their focus away from the road and their hands off the wheel. Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Loy Hixson said this is a city and county ordinance most people don't know about.
“It states that when a person is operating a vehicle they must provide full attention to the driving so that it won't render that action to be unsafe,” Hixson said.
When it comes to distracted drivers, Hixson said he has seen it all.
“They may be eating; we've seen women putting on makeup. I have seen men shaving with their electric razors," Hixson said. "One time, when I was driving down U.S. 95, I saw a lady watching a movie on her iPad and the iPad was attached to her steering wheel with Velcro."
Hixson says each ticket is issued on a case by case basis. For example, some drivers that may be an exception to the rule are people with medical conditions. Take a person who may have an episode; those drivers most likely will not receive a citation, according to Hixson.
However, that wasn't the case for Fragoso. The valley woman said she learned a tough lesson that day. Fragoso says she plans to be more conscious.
Along, with the fine, Fragoso's ticket caused her to receive points against her driving record. Her primary offense was Full Time Attention, but she says after the officer pulled her over she was also cited for Expired Registration and No Proof of Insurance.

Florida man masturbates outside after mom won't let him watch porn in the house
http://rollingout.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/asmith.jpg They're called privates for a reason.
A Florida man was arrested last month after allegedly walking outside his Stuart home while naked and touching himself, reports TCPalm.com. (http://offthebeat.blogs.tcpalm.com/2014/12/09/1010/)
Anthony Smith, 21, explained to authorities he gets a "high" to have others see him naked.
But the real issue could be his strict mother, who actually has a rule of no porn inside the house.
That's what prompted the nude suspect to go outside in the middle of the day on Nov. 14 in hopes that someone would see him, the Martin County Sheriff's Office wrote in the report.
He wasn't disappointed, although others probably were.
A witness told police they saw the clothes-less Smith masturbating in his yard. As officers responded they saw him "bending down naked in the driveway," the website reported.
After seeing the officers -—the real ones, not porn ones — he ran inside his home and put on some clothes

As he retreated into his home the law officers had to defend themselves and shot him 16 times in the back of the head. He was a threat and the tazer could not be utilized due to poor contact clothing. The suspect on police video appears to be running for his life, which he won at the end of the violent altercation.

NYPD bans officer from driving ‘Dukes of Hazard’s’ General Lee car to work because it’s ‘racist’ (http://www.bizpacreview.com/2015/04/18/nypd-bans-officer-from-driving-dukes-of-hazards-general-lee-car-to-work-because-its-racist-196478#ixzz3XlEfXbnh)
When the unidentified officer drove to work in a replica of “The General Lee” from the 1980s hit CBS show “The Dukes of Hazzard,” a resident called the local CBS affiliate to complain.
The problem? The car’s roof is adorned with a Confederate flag.
“It’s a symbol of racism, really, if you think about it,” one man told CBS2 New York (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/04/17/cbs2-exclusive-some-take-offense-to-cops-general-lee-car-with-confederate-flag/).
A police source told the station that the officer who owns the car is a “big-time ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ fan” who has only driven it to work a couple times.
Some argue that the 1969 Dodge Charger is inappropriate for a police officer to drive.
“I would feel uncomfortable driving that,” New Yorker Michael Wynn told the station. “If I was a cop, I would feel very uncomfortable.”
Others disagreed.

“It doesn’t bother me either way, it really doesn’t,” a black woman told CBS2.
A civil rights lawyer said the cop’s personal car is protected by free speech provisions.
“Government must remain neutral to any viewpoint or idea, and allow the expression of ideas, even if the vast majority of the community considers the idea dangerous, offensive, wrong and evil,” attorney Nadine Strossen said.
Still, a spokesman for the New York City Police Department said the officer has been instructed not to drive the car to work anymore.
“Due to the fact that its presence at the NYPD facility may be considered offensive and/or inappropriate, the registered owner is being instructed that the car should not be parked on NYPD property,” the unnamed spokesman said.
So much for free speech.

Petition Demanding Black Students Be Exempt From Failing Grades Has 1,300 Signatures (http://downtrend.com/robertgehl/college-students-demand-blacks-be-exempt-from-failing-grades-because-racism#.VTZt2U6QpBE.facebook)
When Columbia Law School let Black students postpone their final exams because they might be “traumatized (http://downtrend.com/robertgehl/law-school-lets-students-traumatized-by-non-indictments-postpone-finals/)” by recent protests, they really let the cat out of the bag.
Now students at Oberlin College, one of the most liberal college in the country are demanding (http://oberlinreview.org/7109/news/7109/) African-American students be completely exempt from failing this semester because they’re so deeply affected in “times like this.”
So far, the Ohio college has said they will allow professors to exercise “flexibility” in “emergency incomplete requests,” but has not given a flat out “pass” to all Black students.
This is making students really whiny. In a poorly written petition (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mJf2-iPUhqf15lJO5_Ne1kMNsoyEh7QkmuaTwAE6syA/viewform?c=0&w=1) to Oberlin President Marvin Krislov – that has more than 1,300 signatures – the students lay out their “demands:”
Petition for Marvin Krislov to Suspend Standard Grading System
I would really like to see the normal grading system suspended for this semester and replaced with a no-fail mercy period. Administrators should require professors to exercise complete flexibility in what students are saying they can produce academically. Require that every professor listen to what their students are saying and if that means rather than writing a paper students instead meet with their professor to simply discuss in groups their paper topics or if tests are taken collectively with professors there are ways to make sure we are learning what we are supposed to be learning in ways that are not so taxing in times like this. Students in this moment should have complete access to alternative modes of learning while we process what’s happening. Basically, no student especially black students and students of color should be failing a class this semester. A “C” should be the lowest grade students can receive this semester. Professors should be required to work with students, who would otherwise be at risk of failing, to create alternate means of accessing knowledge. This is a – Petition for Marvin Krislov to Suspend Standard Grading System – sign if you agree!
Giving a free pass to Black students while requiring the standard academic rigor for everyone else? No, that doesn’t sound racist at all, does it?
Ironically, students cite Oberlin College’s graduation of its first Black student 19 years before the Emancipation Proclamation as evidence that the school should give Blacks a free pass now. That student, George B. Vashon, went on to become a professor at Howard University. Back in 1844, did Vashon get a “free pass” because things were so traumatic for Blacks? Of course not.
Anything less that equal academic standards and rigor for all students would set Oberlin backward, not forward.
And that these students don’t see that is very sad.

Something stinks.
Letter: Farts should be Pendleton council’s next order of business (http://www.eastoregonian.com/eo/letters/20150522/letter-farts-should-be-pendleton-councils-next-order-of-business#.VWFogWvtMCN.facebook)
It was with great relief Thursday when I read in the East Oregonian that Pendleton’s city council took the time to pass an amendment to the city’s nuisance ordinance banning marijuana odor. Clearly, there has been no issue of greater importance facing the city. Now that this important work has been completed I hope that the council will move on to restricting the other offensive smell that plagues our community: farts.
While farting may be legal in Oregon, many (including myself) are offended by the flatulent stench. Too often, homeowners and businesses fail to contain farts to their property, forcing the rest of us to put up with the smell. Some habitual farters argue that they need to fart for medical reasons but that doesn’t mean my kids should have to smell their farts. The city council should stop looking the other way and pretending not to notice.
I’m not even going to talk about intensity of farts. After all, as Pendleton police Chief Stuart Roberts put it: “It’s a very subjective standard in terms of whether people are offended by [smells] or not.”
This issue greatly affects me as I have a roommate whose recreational farting has been negatively affecting my quality of life for several months now. He claims that he is taking steps to mitigate the odor after I contacted the authorities. But unless our elected officials add farts to Pendleton’s nuisance code, it’s as if he who smelt it, dealt it. I call on our city council to set aside all other work and address this problem.

Often times to get other people to smell ones gaseous emissions, the dealer (dealt) might ask their companions if they can smell something. It might be popcorn or it might be some other thing like bacon etc. I wonder if this persons room mate asks such questions. And why not get another roomy. I guess you probably cannot discriminate according to bodily emissions. So you probably cannot advertise for someone who's farts smell like roses. Not sure on the legal situation with that one.
I'd suggest that the complainer is just a hater and there are definitely hate laws that should be able to deal with the situation.

IRS confirms illegals can get back-taxes under Obama amnesty (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/jun/3/irs-illegals-can-get-back-taxes-obama-amnesty/)
IRS (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/internal-revenue-service/) Commissioner John Koskinen (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/john-koskinen/) has confirmed to Congress (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/congress/) that illegal immigrants granted amnesty under President Obama’s new programs could claim back-refunds even when they never filed returns to pay their taxes in the first place.
Sen. Charles E. Grassley, who had pressed Mr. Koskinen (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/john-koskinen/) over the issue, released written responses Wednesday in which the commissioner admitted he’d botched the question earlier and in fact illegal immigrants granted the amnesty will now be able to claim refunds on tax returns they never even filed, thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit.
“To clarify my earlier comments on EITC, not only can an individual amend a prior year return to claim EITC, but an individual who did not file a prior year return may file a return and claim EITC (subject to refund limitations under section 6511 of the Internal Revenue Code),” Mr. Koskinen (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/john-koskinen/) said.
He insisted, however, that he doubts many illegal immigrants will take advantage of the loophole because they would have to be able to prove their earnings for those years they never filed returns.
“Filers would have to reconstruct earnings and other records for years when they were not able to work on the books,” he said.
Taxpayers must have Social Security numbers in order to claim the EITC, and illegal immigrants aren’t supposed to have numbers. But Mr. Obama’s new deportation amnesty grants illegal immigrants work permits, which are then used to obtain Social Security numbers.
IRS (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/internal-revenue-service/) lawyers have ruled that once illegal immigrants get numbers, they can go back and re-file for up to three previous years’ taxes and claim refunds even for time they were working illegally.
The lawyers said since the EITC is a refundable credit, that’s allowed even when the illegal immigrants worked off-the-books and never paid taxes in the first place.
“Section 32 of the Internal Revenue Code requires an SSN on the return, but a taxpayer claiming the EITC is not required to have an SSN before the close of the year for which the EITC is claimed,” Mr. Koskinen (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/john-koskinen/) said. “At your request, the IRS (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/internal-revenue-service/) has reviewed the relevant statutes and legislative history, and we believe that the 2000 Chief Counsel Advice (CCA) on this issue is correct.”
Mr. Koskinen (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/john-koskinen/) had initially said illegal immigrants could claim refunds but only for years they’d filed returns and presumably had paid some taxes.
Most of Mr. Obama’s amnesty is on hold after federal courts ruled he likely broke the law by acting on his own without Congress (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/congress/)’s approval and without putting his policy out for public review and comment.
But a 2012 policy that applies to so-called Dreamers, or young adult illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, is in effect.
Homeland Security has approved 664,607 initial applications for Dreamers, and approved another 243,872 renewals over the last year, extending the initial two-year amnesty for another two years.

"Transabled" People Are A Thing. I Am Not Making This Up. (http://chicksontheright.com/blog/item/29197-trasabled-people-are-a-thing-i-am-not-making-this-up)
I have absolutely no idea how to process this. (http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/becoming-disabled-by-choice-not-chance-transabled-people-feel-like-impostors-in-their-fully-working-bodies)
According to that sourcelink, there are people among us who, even though they are perfectly healthy and able-bodied, WANT to become disabled, and will sometimes injure themselves purposefully to achieve that goal.
A guy named Jason, for example, CUT OFF HIS RIGHT ARM with a power tool, because he had such a strong, insatiable desire to be disabled. Other "transabled" people want to become deaf, blind, or otherwise limit or eliminate movement in their extremities and will go to great lengths to achieve their desired disability. Most transabled people, according to the sourclink, are men who crave amputation or paralysis, but at least one on record wants to have his penis cut off.
THESE PEOPLE EXIST, y'all.
One guy apparently dropped a massively heavy concrete block on his legs, hoping he'd need to have them amputated. Much to his disappointment, doctors were able to save his legs (those jerks!) and he "only" has a limp now. To him, having only a limp is lame (no pun intended.)
Ok, so maybe there was a little pun intended there.
Apparently, some transabled folks compare their experience to transgender people who don't feel like they're in the right body. Transabled people genuinely believe their arms or legs or eyes or ears SHOULDN'T be functional, and so they are at odds with the fact that those body parts work just fine. One social worker who studies this disorder, Clive Baldwin, says that amputations can legitimately HELP some of those suffering, just as a sex change operation can help transgender people.
And now, as transgender folks are getting more attention from the pop culture media world (Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner), people who identify as transabled are looking for acceptance and understanding as well. And you know who's irritated by that? Transgender people. And disability activists, according to the sourcelink.
Alexandre Baril, a disabled transgender "academic" who focuses his research on transabled people in addition to feminist, gender and sexuality studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, says:
“They tend to see transabled people as dishonest people, people who try to steal resources from the community, people who would be disrespectful by denying or fetishizing or romanticizing disability reality. Each try to distance themselves.”
Transability has another name - Body Integrity Identity Disorder. It's a thing, you guys. And I guarantee you that it's going to become and bigger and bigger thing. I guarantee you that within just a few years, ESPN is going to give some famous person the Arthur Ashe courage award for like, gouging out their own eyes in order to live a freer, transabled life.
It could happen.
The world just keeps getting crazier and crazier, doesn't it?
