How a McDonald's Sausage Burrito contains more than 100 ingredients - including one chemical used in FIREWORKS

A new behind-the-scenes video reveals that although the liquid egg in the sandwich originates from a farm in Michigan, it is mixed with twenty other components before flash frozen and reheated at restaurants
Among the scrambled egg mix is carboxymethyl cellulose - a binding compound found in denture adhesives - and sodium benzoate, which is also added to fireworks to produce a whistling sound
The finished burrito contains 300 calories, and 790 milligrams of sodium - more than one third of the recommended daily intake

Sodium benzoate is an ubiquitous food chemical preservative found in just about all ready to eat off the shelf processed foods and condiments including throughout the grocery stores (excluding health oriented stores like Whole Foods). The food technology industry regards sodium benzoate a 'generally regarded as safe' (GRAS)* food chemical so it's disingenuous to single out McD's, they ALL use sodium benzoate somewhere. Be informed and read ALL food labels, prepare to be shocked.

*of course this 'safe' designation doesn't mean it's not some nasty shit people shouldn't be eating, surely what they mean to convey is that sodium benzoate won't kill you directly or immediately affect one's health, merely consequentially/indirectly/as a contributing factor over the course of time

thanks MR, just did a quick search

This is Why Sodium Benzoate is So Scary
Sodium benzoate is a sodium salt that is present at extremely low levels in berries, apples, plums, cinnamon, and several other natural foods. There’s nothing scary about the chemical in these items. But lab-synthesized sodium benzoate (and its close relative, benzoic acid) are a different story. When these preservatives are added to foods and to the interior of metal cans that contain beverages or liquid foods, they can have a detrimental effect on your health...... For example, a small percentage of people are hypersensitive to sodium benzoate and can experience asthmatic attacks, hives, or other allergic reactions when they consume the preservative. A more common problem, however, is the combination of sodium benzoate and citric acid and/or ascorbic acid (vitamin C). When these ingredients get together, they form benzene, a cancer-causing chemical associated with leukemia and other blood cancers.... if you want to avoid sodium benzoate, read labels carefully. Look for the words “benzoic acid,” “benzene,” “sodium benzoate,” or “benzoate,” especially if you also see “citric acid,” “ascorbic acid,” or “vitamin C.” Sodium benzoate is also known as E211.... more

Aspartame Is Linked To Leukemia And Lymphoma In New Landmark Study On Humans
October 31, 2012

As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.
The most thorough study yet on aspartame – Over two million person-years

For this study, researchers prospectively analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. Apart from sheer size, what makes this study superior to other past studies is the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed. Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only ever assessed participants’ aspartame intake at one point in time, which could be a major weakness affecting their accuracy.

The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:

- 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
- 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)
- 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (in men only)

I know of someone just diagnosed with bone cancer or blood cancer. It's cancer of the blood I think. Not sure if that is myeloma.

I was a very heavy consumer of aspartame for many years. It made me incredibly ill. I used to consume 3 - 6 12oz cans per day of PMax. I also would consume about 5 sticks of sugar free gum per day. I got to the point where I was virtually paralyzed, unable to walk. My hips could not carry me. I think I carried as much as 50 kilos extra weight.

Just stopping the drink consumption reduced my weight by about 30% in about 3 months. It started falling off quickly in the first few weeks and then continued for about 3 months. No exercise at that time.Only from stopping consumption.

Personally I would ban it outright. It is highly toxic and dangerous crap. It should not be in the food chain at all. It would be good if more people knew how dangerous it is.

It also causes your body to uptake more alcohol if used in a drink mixer, getting you intoxicated about 50% faster than if you don't drink it. There are no good reasons for it's use.
