I've been reading your awesome THREAD (http://www.goldismoney2.com/showthread.php?70531-CANtainer-Camp) over at GIM2 and just now realized that you are the go-to guy for ideas about constructing survival structures. Here in Idaho an outhouse gets damn cold in the winter and as I age my enthusiasm for answering the call of nature, especially at night, has been waning. Us exceptional Americans can put a man on the moon but can't solve this? Nonsense! Researching this problem finally led me to Amazon for answers and I eventually arrived at this genius solution: I installed a solar panel on the roof of my outhouse and purchased this little life-changing item:

God bless America! These 130 Amazon survivalists restored my faith in our country. No wonder the terrorists hate us. WTSHTF my outhouse is now gonna be suitable for long-term survival. Even has a nightlight. When the jews force Obama to arm Ukraine against Russia and Putin nukes all of our cities my butt will still be warm and toasty in Idaho. I can just sit there and listen to Fox News on my rechargeable-battery shortwave radio as Bill O'Reilly keeps me updated. Ponce already taught me to have plenty of toilet tissue stockpiled. I'll be all set for the end of the world as we know it...except...I first need your help Hoarder. I need you to tell me how to connect this 55 watt electric toilet seat up to my solar panel. How big a battery should I buy? Stuff like that.

https://xerq.io/images/smilies/shrug.gif says it needs something called a GFI outlet

Damn. Did you take an advanced trolling class while you were away?

I'm impressed! That's some serious professional material right there.

That thing apparently runs on 120VAC, which is why it calls for a GFCI. If the seat was wet and the pit grounded, I suppose you could get shocked if you sit down to pee.
A decade ago I was making an offer on a cabin that had an outhouse, no septic. I did a lot of research trying to find a 12 VDC toilet seat warmer, which would be a BARE neccessity for a southerner wintering in Montana. There was none to be found.

Running a small single 120 VAC load off of solar panels is impractical as hell, especially a 55 watt constant load in winter. My constant load on my entire house is only about 60 watts and that's only when I'm awake. You would need a BIG battery and an inverter, but it could be done. A better idea would be to power it off the house system inverter and set it up on a timer. Energize the timer, wait a few minutes for warm up, then jog out there and do yer bizniz.

Simple, just get one of these, a small propane heater. Should heat up a toilet seat pretty quickly if aimed at it.

"Alone in the Wilderness" follows Dick Proenneke as he builds a cabin by hand on the shore of Twin Lakes, Alaska in 1967. Proenneke documented his experience on a 16mm wind-up Bolex camera and turned it into the film we know today. You won't see stunning HD footage, or shocked by life-or-death "reality TV" situations. However, you will witness a man building a simple cabin with his bare hands in an untamed, harsh wilderness. It's most likely the simplicity and solitude that viewers find so relaxing.

Thanks Hoarder!

Dick Proenneke never mentioned this while living in Alaska. Those 130 customer reviews at Amazon are from people living in heated homes. Curious why none of the so-called survivalist websites never address a solution for their "bugout" venues. Somebody could get rich designing and selling a 12-volt version...

Dick Proenneke never mentioned this while living in Alaska. Maybe he has a sawdust toilet or peat moss toilet, depending on what was available to him. He didn't really have much sense anyway, maybe he just squatted outside so there was no seat contact. No smell 'til spring thaw.

If the heated seat was a distance from the cabin and powered from the cabin, a 120 VAC unit would be better anyway as less copper would have to be purchased to wire it.
