The model comes with an 18-karat gold case, designed to be "twice as hard as standard gold." It also utilizes a sapphire crystal display, and can be outfitted with either a leather or sport wristband.
Technology giant Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may soon buy up one third of the world’s gold in order to meet the demands of its highly anticipated Apple Watch (http://www.mining.com/apples-new-18k-gold-watch-may-wipe-out-your-bank-account-34692/), according to reports.
Interest in the high-end model, featuring 18-karat gold casing, is picking up and the firm is already taking the necessary steps to have enough of them in stock. According to WSJ.com (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/02/17/apple-orders-more-than-5-million-watches-for-initial-run/), Apple plans to start producing more than one million units per month in the second quarter of the year, anticipating high demand from Asian markets, mainly China.

\ (http://www.mining.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/apple-gold-watch.jpg)This Apple Watch could cost as much as 10 iPads.
Josh Centers, from TidBits, estimates that each gold watch will contain 2 troy ounces (http://tidbits.com/article/15443) (62.2 grams) of gold. So, based on the estimated sales figure, he concludes that Apple will need 746 tons of gold a year, or about 30% of the world’s annual production.
His estimations — admittedly based on the Wall Street Journal predictions, not official figures — would mean that Apple may soon become a major player in the world’s luxury watch market, grabbing about half of it.

This is why the apple watch will fail, imo. If the apple watch has 2 oz of gold in it, a sapphire crystal, etc. It is going to cost the customer thousands of dollars.
That means the apple watch will be competing against high end regular watches, such as Rolex.
People that buy high end watches are usually looking for a few things. A high end mechanical work of art, a timepiece built so well it can be passed on down the generations. It takes many years to reach a skill level in watchmaking to accomplish that. You buy a name, a heritage, a history of excellence with Rolex.
Nobody who has thousands of dollars for a watch, is going to spend that on an electronic gadget that has a limited life. People know their Iphones will only last a couple of years before they have to upgrade.
You don't buy a Rolex to upgrade it in a couple of years.
I mention Rolex because that's the market this apple watch is going to compete against, price wise.
Honest question, two guys sit down at the blackjack table next to a hot babe. One guy is wearing a Rolex, the other guy is wearing the apple watch, which guy do you think is going to pick up that babe and take her upstairs?

Exactly my thoughts too, in a few years, the apple watch technology will be obsolete, where you can buy a rolex and keep it the rest of your life.

tisk tisk tisk..you haven't given this much thought. IMO, apple watch technology won't become obsolete, anymore then your iPhone will. Don't think Apple hasn't thoroughly thought this through. The watch itself might be able to be upgraded without having to be replaced.
I think we are heading quickly to a cashless society. This will give tptb complete control over everyone and their money. There will be no more bank runs.
Furthermore, this iWatch technology is only going to grow, just like the iPhones you all are addicted to. So get ready to stand in line for your very own Apple watch...You will own one!
My guess is, this device will be used to identify you, identify you in your travels, make purchases, start your car, enter your home, enter buildings/offices...pretty much everything you do will be recorded and logged for future use. Yes you will own one, mark my words.
Oh and the metaphor "two guys sit down at the blackjack table next to a hot babe. One guy is wearing a Rolex, the other guy is wearing the apple watch, which guy do you think is going to pick up that babe and take her upstairs"
I'll bet the babe will take the guy with the apple watch.
In the future the hot babe may be able to check compatability of the man by having her apple watch read info on his.
The Rolex guy will be unknown, not in the system and not safe to approach. Who knows?
Just remember this, it is you guys that welcomed this technology that you can no longer live without. Blame yourselves for the nightmare that will be our future.

No way the apple watch guy is going to pick up that hot babe. Rolex has such a name recognition, it says that the guy wearing it has been successful, he's done well in life, and treated himself to a watch that will last a lifetime...furthermore, it will hold it's value. He has good tastes.
The apple watch just says I'm a tech geek who's foolish with money.

Never going to happen my friend. I don't care about fashion or trends, but I've gained a true appreciation for a nice watch. The watch I've got I really like. Not a rolex or even close, but has a well made swiss movement, sapphire crystal, even on the caseback so I can see all those little parts moving. Point is, this watch will hopefully last my lifetime.
Let's make this interesting EE. I challenge you to a bet. I bet the apple watch will be an epic fail.

All the big tech companies are investing billions into this watch technology and they will begin their launch this year.
Did you ever think the iPhone would go this big, this quick?
Younger generations no longer need a nice watch and don't were them. They want internet connectivity and function.
The government has just taken the first step in the complete control and take-over of the internet. Everywhere you carry your iPhone a log is being generated, where you went, what you did and how fast you got there. They have a serious incentive to have you carry and wear these devices.
I for one reject this technology even though I have to do without the convenience.
Lets think about this bet, and the time frame?

I don't think the younger generations want a watch, period. The iPhone is a bit different, everyone "needs" a phone. Nobody needs a watch anymore when you've got a phone. People that buy watches these days don't out of necessity, it's always some other reason.
So, the geeks will now have a choice. The question really is, will they choose an apple watch, or will they choose the latest Iphone?
There's no point in having both. The apple watch I think, is going to try and replace the Iphone. Think about this...the younger generations are so attached to their phones these days, how is apple going to change that culture? People would almost rather lose an arm than part with their beloved phones.

I think they will soon have both because they will still want the screen size of the iPhone.
It will be convenience that sells them. They won't have to whip out their iPhone everytime they have to access a basic function like paying for things, or entering a building or their car.

Hitch, in someways I think EE may be in the long run right, not necessarily an apple watch but something similar.
The trend is there to see if one looks. Phones/tablets and such are becoming personal data centers and assistants. Hell my nexus 7 is toted with me where ever I go. As my book reader, watch, timer when cooking, etc.
Phones/tablets and wearable watches that are linked to a tablet that you have on you that the user can manage everything in their lifes are already here, just starting out but it WILL grow. There are apps that if you have a smart house, you can control everything in that house that is hooked into the system. And in time the trend will grow, this is a trend that is not a flash in the pan.
There seems to really an app for just about dam near everything.
If I wanted I could use Google pay much like apples feature, I can use my tablet where ever the feature is offered to pay with my tablet.
And it will get worse or better depending on ones viewpoint, as long as we as a people do not emp/nuke our self's off the face of the planet and we go stone age again, it will happen.
Just give it a few more generations, Cash I think will never totally disappear because if it does what happens to brick and mortar banks? No cash will still be with us for a very long time, the bankers will make sure of that, its called self preservation.
But electronic payments will also become more prominent, along with debt cards and such. I am seeing people are using checks less, I still do for all my payments, when in a store, I have been asked you still use checks, as I pay.
So your bet, will never pan out, the watch will always hold value and enhance the wearers perceived status that he/she has cash to blow. The one with the apple ? may end up as just one of the pack, tho at first new toys do attract attention.

Yea when we all get brain implants, it would take that to figure out a woman's mind, but I suspect even that will never be enough ! ;)
But EE IS right, I have been watching this trend develop for years and only recently has the tech gotten small enough to be practical, with computational power networking and such, Ipads opened the door, and android is starting to leave apple in the dust in many ways.
There will come a day that most people will rely on their phones/tablets and watch linked to their tablet/ipad those will be in the majority.

There may still be cash for a long time to come, but think of this...what if ATM's no longer give cash, only digital credits to your iPhone/watch? Same thing at the teller. Bank runs would be a thing of the past.
If we all agree the system is dying, what is a better way to manage it, then to remove as much cash as possible?
Like I said give it a few more generations, so the old fogy's to die off or not count anymore.

Personally, I'm hoping for a big shock to the system that will set tptb back a decade, or so.

I've realized the flaw in my thinking. I was thinking this apple watch was targeting folks who already wear watches, and trying to convert them. But, that's right, the younger generations don't wear watches anyway, so apple is probably just trying to expand on that untapped market. I can see how kids would think it would be the next cool thing to buy. They will likely have both, the phone and the watch, and the ipad....and the go pro...on and on it goes. Effing tech gadgets. Why use a atm at all, if you can access your account over the air/net? Digital credits are electronic and love wireless just as well as wired systems.
If credits are 100% electronic, why need a teller at all? Why need a bank in town?
You are right bank runs will be a thing of the past and never more, because physical banks will not exist any more.
No cash will be with us for a long time, but electronic at the stores will probably increase more than it is already happening, go to a store most payments are by plastic (electronic) more than cash right now.

The software can be upgraded, but not the hardware. The same thing will happen to the apple watch, the hardware will go obsolete, and no software upgrading will fix that. It'll be just like the iphones, you will need to buy a new one every few years to keep up with technology, and when they cost 10x an ipad (so between $4-8k each), who's going to do that?
And I agree with hitch, the whole apple watch thing is going to be an epic fail. Very few people will want a watch on their wrist when their phone is in their pocket. Why would anyone trade a large screen phone for a tiny screen attached to your wrist? Plus, the only people who can even use an apple watch are people who already own iphones. It won't work without one, so their market is already limited to current iphone users.

Now think of electronic cash, which can be deposited/stored anywhere that is recognized as a financial center, which can be a small office with huge servers and such anywhere in the world.
Physical cash will always exist because you can hold it and will not disappear when the power goes out. Where electronic cash may still exist but without power it can not be moved.
Cash (real) has legs.
Electronic credits and use will increase in time that is for sure, but there will always be the physical, until there is a complete change and neighborhood banks dry up and blow away because they are not needed nor wanted.

Yep, Real watches can be for generations and handed down.
Anything electronic does have a lifespan because electronics evolve and hardware becomes obsolete.
I have an old 8088 laptop, with 1 meg ram, clock speed is maybe 8 mhz that still works, but today is as useful as tits on a boar hog.
The watch will retain its value for generations, and nothing electronic will or can do the same and still be useful to the owner.

A very small market I think. No nearly enough to even be noticed in regards to the world's physical gold supply.

I have a feeling we'll be in for a surprise when the apple watch finally comes... I think the phone will be in it, and then you use next generation iPod as your handset, communicating with the watch-phone via low energy Bluetooth, or you can use an iPad or a Bluetooth headset together with the watch... What is surprising is they have not yet showed the new iPod! Last time the ipod came in connection with the iPhone 5 model, this time it will come with the apple watch (I think). Anyway making the watch the communication center makes perfect sense, it is always worn, you get the radiation a bit further from the head. There are plenty of watches weighing more than an iPhone, so ample space to put in a lot of battery, and if you use a headset, you can check things on the Internet on your super slim iPod while you talk on the phone... It makes sense to make the watch the centerpiece of communication. If Apple doesn't do this I think there watch will be a failure, as it won't bring anything innovative to the scene, that Samsung et al hasn't already done...

If the rumors are true, it's 1/3 of one years gold production, not 1/3 of the world's total gold. Also, I highly doubt that each watch has two troy ounces in it. Even if it's 62.2 grams of 18k gold, that's only 1.5 troy oz of pure gold.
I was going to make both of these points. :) A year's gold production is about 75 million troy ounces. Every year the above ground supply increases by about 1%.

Obviously I picked the number out of the air, but I did check and 2 years ago 56% in the US owned them. Thats about 180 million people,(2 years ago). Probably close to 200,000,000 today. Is that enough?
It's actually a higher percentage if you only include abled-bodied people. Take out children under a certain age, prison population, nursing home people, handicapped, etc. So lets say there are 225 million abled-bodied people in the US and 200 million have them...that's a pretty high percentage, don't you think?

If she's under 35, she won't know what a Rolex is, and she'll be impressed by Apple's latest cool expensive thing. I'll put my money on Apple Guy.

so basically 1/3 of the worlds gold is going to the rubbish dump? Nice.
No, you guys are thinking of this all wrong. The gold isn't going to be scrap like it is in computers and phones. It will be the impressive exterior.
I think EE's forward thinking is right. You don't think Apple has thought this through? The interior electronics and software will be upgradable every couple of years, but the luxurious exterior will remain intact. Did you notice the article mentioned big sales in India and China, where people are used to storing their gold in everyday accessories, like jewelry? I think you are overlooking the "trendiness" of this being matched with the timeless beauty and value of gold. This would be a great thing for gold bugs, and is very plausible. My guess is it will require about $1000 in gold at today's price, so will probably retail for a couple of thousand dollars. Imagine if they sell a million, and then gold goes up enough to cover the cost. You don't think that will make it more appealing for the next 50 million potential buyers?

Here's what she's thinking about Apple Guy. "This jerk is so stupid to waste money on something that will be outdated in a year. Be gone fool!"

The entire population of the US is less than 320 million. No way in hell 94% of the US population owns an iphone.
About 25% of American adults own an iPhone. That's about 50 million, just in the U.S. Apple sells about 75 million per year worldwide, and the average person replaces their's about every 2-3 years. So there are probably around 200 million iPhone owners worldwide. The average person pays about $250 for their iPhone, and about $1500 in service charges over the 30 months they own the phone. So they are already paying $1750 every 2.5 years for their iPhone ownership. That would have been unthinkable a decade ago, as unthinkable as paying for a $2000 gold iWatch. I say if they do this right (i.e. the "guts" of the watch is easily replaceable but the gold exterior does not), the whole thing is very possible. You don't think people will want both an iPhone and and iWatch? Do you realize how many iPhone owners also went out and bought an iPad, simply for the different size?

Our first look at LG's new webOS and Android Wear smartwatches
The Watch Urbane and Watch Urbane LTE come out at MWC
By Sam Byford on March 1, 2015 07:00 am Email @345triangle
LG has kicked off Mobile World Congress this Sunday morning in Barcelona by showing off its two Watch Urbane smartwatches for the first time. The pair were announced in the lead-up to MWC, but this has been our first opportunity to see them in person and get some lingering questions answered.
The regular Watch Urbane puts a premium spin on Android Wear, but the Watch Urbane LTE is a different proposition altogether — it's the world's first smartwatch with LTE connectivity, and last week we thought it might be the first webOS smartwatch too. How are they both looking?
By far the more interesting of the pair is the Watch Urbane LTE. Despite what LG representatives told us last week, this is a watch running software based on webOS, with the same circular interface that Audi displayed at CES earlier in the year year. Unlike with its smart TV software, however, LG isn't playing up the webOS connection, instead simply stating that the device runs on the company's own proprietary wearable platform. And really, that's probably for the best — no-one's going to mistake this for a Palm Pre.
LG CAN'T SATISFY EVERY CUSTOMER WITH ANDROID WEAR
Developing its own watch OS rather than relying on the somewhat minimalist Android Wear has given LG the flexibility to offer a lot of new features; the company says that while it will continue to focus on Android Wear, it can't satisfy every customer with Google's platform. The watch faces are far more customizable, for example, letting you choose the background, watch hands, and minute marks.
But the Watch Urbane LTE's main feature by far is its cellular connectivity, which lets you answer calls, check emails, or hold walkie-talkie-style conversations with multiple people anywhere without having a smartphone connected. There are other features for hiking, cycling, playing golf, and working out, with the various sensors helping to track your performance. There's a built-in voice translator app, too, and NFC connectivity lets you use the watch for mobile payments.
Make no mistake — this watch is a gadget. The Watch Urbane LTE's metal body is pretty bulky, and I wasn't too fond of the built-in rubber band. The three-button interface, meanwhile, isn't all that intuitive at first. But I got used to the software soon enough, and in terms of sheer stuff you can do with it, the Watch Urbane LTE is one of the most powerful wearable devices yet. I wouldn't wear one myself, but I have no doubt it'll appeal to some.
Because of the Watch Urbane LTE's extra connectivity, it has its own phone number, and will require a second data plan. The LTE watch is so far only confirmed for South Korea, where it will launch within a couple of months for an undisclosed price.
There's a non-LTE version of the Watch Urbane, too, but it's a vastly different product. It runs Android Wear, making it functionally more or less identical to other watches that use Google's OS. The focus on this one is "luxury," with LG hoping to offer a new experience through materials and design.
Like LG's previous Android Wear smartwatch, the G Watch R, the Watch Urbane has a circular OLED display, but the bezel has been slimmed down considerably, and it isn't marked at five-minute intervals, unlike the LTE watch. The silver- or gold-finished body is stainless steel without a screw in sight, and the strap is made from stitched leather. The craftsmanship is not, of course, on par with a luxury watch, but if you're of the school of thought that believes smartwatches should emulate traditional timepieces, you'll probably find this to be one of the more attractive Android Wear devices so far.
The Watch Urbane will be making it to the US and Europe by the end of April. AT&T is the first carrier to confirm it will offer the Watch Urbane. Pricing information isn't yet available.

Swiss watchmakers are teaming up to fight Apple and Google
by Aaron Souppouris | @aaronissocial | February 27th 2015 at 9:29 am
Swiss watch companies are finally waking up to the potential of smartwatches, with the launch of models from three different companies. Mondaine, Alpina and Frederique Constant have revealed their take on the smartwatch today, and they're all very similar, and very familiar. All three are powered by MotionX, a new "open platform" for watchmakers to build smartwatch features into traditional watches.
MotionX smart watches support activity tracking with goals and alerts, sleep monitoring, over-the-air updates, and a battery life exceeding two years. Rather than going with digital displays, the new products feature analog dials to show progress, and sync with branded apps for Android and iOS devices, much like Withings' Activité smartwatches. In fact, everything on offer here is like the Activités. It's clear there's a distinct split in the smartwatch world, with the Swiss companies, Withings and Citizen building smartwatch features into traditional watches, and the likes of Apple and Google building more smartphone-like platforms.
Manufacture Modules Technologies (MMT), the Silicon Valley / Swiss joint venture behind MotionX, says more than ten different "horological" smartwatches are coming in 2015, and notes that the three companies signed up so far are only the "initial partners" -- it's expecting more traditional watchmakers will start churning out MotionX watches soon.
More than ten MotionX smartwatches will arrive this year
So what do the first swiss smartwatches look like? The common theme here is that they all look like the respective companies' existing models. Mondaine's watch (the top-most image in this article) is based on the "Helvetica Bold" introduced last year. It's an odd choice, given Mondaine is known for its licensed Swiss railway watches -- made more famous by Apple -- but the Helvetica is a modern, original design. In keeping with their brand aesthetic, Alpina, which is famous for essentially defining the modern sports watch, has an all-metal model (below), while Frederique Constant's watch (above) is a far more ornate affair.
The first watches to come from this partnership will arrive in June. Expect a few more product announcements before then.

Metrosexual is out.
Lumbersexual is in!

http://gearjunkie.com/images/19985.jpg
By Marcie Bianco January 06, 2015 LIKE MIC ON FACEBOOK:
Officially coined only a few months ago by blogs like Gear Junkie, America's latest incarnation of masculinity, the lumbersexual, is fundamentally a bearded hipster with a penchant for plaid, tattoos and cold brew — both coffee and beer. Quickly sensationalized by countless media sites, from Gawker and BuzzFeed to Cosmo and Time, the lumbersexual actually says a lot about the state of masculinity in the 21st century.
In fact, one might just wonder if this new cultural identity signifies a crisis in masculinity. This emergent male archetype, with its echoes of a rugged albeit bygone era, parodies aspects of heterosexual masculinity in extreme and even ridiculous ways, suggesting that the most celebrated manly characteristics are struggling to find a place in the 21st century.
Source: Twitter
A parody of masculinity, or the real thing? Up until now, the LGBT community and people interested in gender theory discussed the "performance" of gender, or how we deliberately appropriate cultural cues of gender, from hairstyle to clothing, to portray a desired gender type. The lumbersexual, however, represents something of a turning point. Now even straight men are thinking critically and openly about how their masculinity is constructed.
This has led to some fascinating observations.
Gay appropriation: One is that heterosexual men have gone out of their way to appropriate gay cultural signifiers of masculinity, as Tim Teeman asserts in his Daily Beast piece, "How [the] Straight World Stole 'Gay.'" "The lumbersexual is just straight culture's latest belated attempt to theatricalize masculinity, decades after gays got there first," Teeman writes. Mark Simpson, in a piece published today at Out, goes so far as to imply that, with the increased popularity of all things gay, straight men "crave gay adulation." Mimicry is, as the adage goes, the sincerest form of flattery. This might also explain the moniker. Otherwise a combination of lumberjack and hipster, "lumbster," seems like it would have been a more fitting term.
Searching for meaning: Willa Brown's captivating essay at the Atlantic contends that the lumbersexual, with its origins in the "romantic" and "authentic" American folk hero Paul Bunyan, does indeed indicate that masculinity is in crisis in the U.S. With money tight and gender parity increasing in the home, "the 'traditional' role of the man as the primary provider is now firmly out of reach for most Americans," Brown writes. "[That] is why it seems particularly apt that (mostly) white, young, urban, middle-class men have once again picked up a symbol invented in the early 20th century by men very much like themselves, a symbol that has long been gathering dust."
Source: Twitter
Of course, lumbersexual is not the first male archetype to appropriate aspects of gay culture. Remember the metrosexual fad popularized in the U.S. in the early 2000s? Something else is at work that makes this latest trend stand out.
And that thing is technology.
In a digital age, it has become harder and harder to prove one's strength, virility and survival skills. Some men seem to have turned to outright misogyny, harassing women online. Others go to war by operating drones or woo women in online dating sites, like Lumbermatch — yes, a dating website for lumbersexuals and people who like them.
Technology proves the extent to which gender is performed by everyone — just look at how we construct ourselves online, in our Facebook and video game avatars. But it has also rendered moot common behaviors of masculinity. Perhaps this is why straight men have gone to such exaggerated lengths to adopt, as Brown observes, such "authentic" and traditional signs of masculinity. Because "real men" can grow "real beards."
Source: Arlen Abraham/Twitter
From the embodiment of faux environmentalism to the meticulous stylization of one's beard with oils and brushes, this male archetype is not different from other male identities in its emphasis on a specific performance of masculinity. But unlike other trends, the lumbersexual is perhaps the first archetype created in response to technology's affect on gender.
Whether men like or not, the digital era is here to stay — meaning the crisis of masculinity exemplified by the lumbersexual is also unlikely to go away anytime soon.

I found this handy infographic which shows that roughly 28% of US smart phone sales are the iphone. I think sparky's nominal number is closer, i.e. 50 million in the US. So, while every other apple product has a target market of 225 million US customers, the apple watch has a potential market of 50 million. Right out the door their market has been reduced almost 75%. My best guess is that between 10-20% of current iphone users will buy the watch, so they can expect to sell between 5-10 million. Of those, how many are going to be the super expensive gold edition (remember they have the basic edition and sports edition as well)? Maybe 10% of that, so they'll sell between 500k - 1 million gold watches.

The article below actually talks about the watch itself. Polling indicates 10% of iPhone owners will buy an iWatch (not a gold iWatch). The gold iWatch market is probably only 1% of that 10%, or 0.1% of iPhone owners. At 200 million owners worldwide, that implies about 200,000 gold iPhone buyers. Looking at the watch, the high end for gold content would seem to be about a half-ounce of 18-carat. So the total gold required would be 200,000 x 0.5 x 0.75, which is 75,000 ounces. Not a significant direct impact on the market.
But, does this raise the visibility of gold as the "gold standard" amongst mainstream folk? Does this provide a new global showcase for gold? That might be an even more important factor in the gold market than Apple's gold purchases.
Finally, the article says each watch (of all types) will come with a stainless steel container. For 20 million watches, that's going to require about a million ounces of nickel...

Another thing to consider, watches more so than phones, take a beating. How is this watch going to stand up to the weather, rain, spilled coffee, etc.
For the price point, apple has a tough road ahead to gain trust in the watch marketplace, imo. First, you have to convince tech geeks that a watch is "cool". Secondly, you have prove it's going to be durable. All the while, teaching consumers that wearing a watch will benefit them.
Then you have the old school watch folks who would never want to be seen wearing that.
They can forecast their hopeful sales and profits, but than again, anyone can try to pull a rabbit out of their ass.
It will be interesting to see this play out.

I guess I don't understand why you think they'll end up in land fill. They're not making the components out of gold. They're making the main housing out of gold. Do people throw gold watches into landfills now? And the iWatch 2 will only replace the interior components, not the gold part. The guts will end up in the land fill, not the gold.

I'm not aware of anyone who throws away their old iphones when they upgrade. First off, a deactivated iphone is still a very impressive ipod, which you can sell for a decent amount of money on ebay or elsewhere. Also, there are companies that buy up en masse all the old iphones/androids from Americans who are upgrading, and they ship them off to other countries where demand is very high for even the last generation of smart phones and devices.

The band isn't gold. The "case" holding the watch face and interior electronics/software is gold, and the clasp is gold. Looking at the pics, there can't be more than 1/10 ounce of gold tops.
So, like the iPhone, the software upgrades are happening all the time, and you can download them whenever you want with a touch of the screen. And if the electronics become obsolete, I presume you can remove the entire interior and swap in new electronics. If not, it still won't be tossed. The reason that gold and silver in other electronics (phones, computers, etc.) is tossed is because of the tiny amounts that are used and distributed within the electronics. You might have electronics where 1/100 ounce of gold is distributed across 10 different contacts, so each "piece" of gold would be 1/1000 of an ounce, which isn't really worth the effort to extract. With the Apple Watch, the gold will be contained within two big "pieces": the main housing, and the clasp. Very easy to recycle as scrap, like other jewelry. No landfills.

So, that would mean at apple stores trained technicians could handle the swap/upgrade. A couple of questions on this. Watches have a rating for water resistance, what is the apple watch rated for? What if you forget to take it off getting into a shower, for example, are you going to fry all the electronics?
Secondly, it has a square crystal. Almost all regular watches have a round crystal for a reason, round crystals are proven to be more water resistant than other shapes. I guess maybe they figure people who would buy the apple watch are not active folks.
edit: I found the answers to my questions. It's not rated for water. People are less than pleased with that. I couldn't wear one personally, even if I wanted to. At work or at home. It would be like my cell phone, not on my person but sitting down below safe.

I saw some of the highlights. The technology is getting so good, your smart watch will talk to your smart phone, they'll talk to your smart car, which will talk to all the smart devices in your home and at work. In the very near future, you won't have to know how to drive, you won't have to do a damn thing. You won't have to turn on a switch, your TV will automaticlly turn on, your refrigirator will order your food and your stove will cook for you. Your digital money will be automaticly transfered along with your welfare credits. You won't even have to be there! You will have so much more time to play virtual games, go to virtual bars with your friends, virtual dates, have virtual sex and go on virtual vacations. You won't even have to tell anyone about it, because their tech devices will already know and they will tell them for you.
This new world is going to be awesome!

I'm working on an app, might already be out there, it's called "The Boss App". All employees will be required to download the app to their smart watch.
It's for your boss to track every employee, when they sign in, take break/lunch, how long they break, everywhere they go during the day, what they did and how long they spend on their iPhone/watch.
Pay is automatically docked for missing time and lack of production. The best part, No more punching time clocks!
Let's all embrace the technology!

EE, the biggest problem will still be the lack of water resistance of the watch. That point is huge, and will cause the apple watch to fail, imo.
It gets me laughing, all these fancy high tech gadgets, yet everything is so fragile. Why can't they make things that last? You drop it you break it. Water gets on it, you kill it. Yet, real watchmaking has so many small parts all working together that lasts lifetimes, made by true craftsmen.
They shouldn't even call it a watch. It's not one, it's a little computer that you wear on your arm.

It is labeled water resistant, but doesn't have a depth rating. Which really is a big deal. You can't wear the watch while washing dishes, while kayaking, while snowboarding, while hiking (caught in the rain, hand falls into a creek), while watering your lawn. While walking down the street, it would be tragic if a car splashed a puddle on you and the watch.
Probably the safest thing to do, is have 2 watches. One you wear, and keep the Iwatch in your briefcase and put it on once you are safely inside at your desk at work. Just remember to take it off before washing your hands in the restroom.
Here's a very detailed article on depth ratings for watches and worth a read. At the bottom of the article there's a quick description of the ratings and what you can and can not do with your watch. Keep in mind that Apple has no submersible rating at all, can't even get listed in this article.

That being said, the target is electronic trendiness. This forum is the anti-market for that, so it's not surprising to see so much skepticism here. Apple is the largest company in the world because they have mastered the electronic trendiness market. The new Apple Watch is going for a big "style" component, as evidence by the dozens of variations available, and the interchangeable bands. Who knows what makes "cool"? It might work, it might not.

You can wear the watch in essentially the same situations that you wear any other watch that isn't depth rated, which is most of the watches that regular people wear. I wear my regular watch hiking. I've never fallen into a creek. I've gotten caught in the rain. I wear it watering the lawn. My watch still works. Water resistant means you can't keep it submerged under water. Most people don't live on a boat. ;-)

Fair enough Sparky, but think about this. Watches can not claim they are waterproof, they all have to claim water resistant. Even dive watches. So, they get rated, the depth ratings, aka ATM. The link I posted earlier explains this.
Why isn't Apple telling the public what depth rating it is? All other watches do. This to me is a big red flag. They are either hiding this information because it's bad, or they haven't tested it at all.

Was Your Apple Watch "First Day" Experience Comparable To This?
Sales manager Tom Logan’s new Apple Watch has been unexpectedly ridiculed by his work colleagues.
32-year-old Logan felt confident that his futuristic timepiece would attract admiring glances rather than unflattering Knight Rider comparisons.
He said: “I had it all planned out – not saying anything about it, but then somebody just notices and goes ‘is that the new Apple Watch?’. I would respond simply with a wry Clooney-esque smile and they would mouth the word ‘awesome’.
“What actually happened is somebody said ‘what the fuck’s that weird-looking thing?’
“I explained that it was the brand new Apple Watch and they went ‘HAHAHA’ in a really deliberately hurtful way. The accounts assistant said it was the opposite of a fanny magnet and everyone cracked up.
“Then everyone started pretending to talk into their watches, saying things like ‘come in KITT, I am a massive tosser, please help’.”
By 10am Logan had removed the watch. He explained: “It wasn’t because people were being sarcastic, I just had a hot wrist, everyone gets a hot wrist sometimes.
“People get jealous of early adopters."

I've got a bunch of china copy phones and they are ok for what they are and the $$. The guts are obviously not what is in a regular brand and even what they say is in them is not whats in them. So they are kind of a fake of a fake. Only issue I have with that is, I would like to swap in some other modem drivers for the 4G we have here in Australia but almost impossible to determine what hardware is in the phone to get the right drivers. The data speed maxes out at about 28Kbps most of the time for 4G so basically useless for internet when that happens.
there are many thousands of china phones now and they are getting pretty good since they started making their own designs and stopped copying.

Hahaha, this is similar to how the Yuppies who had the first cell phones in late 80's early 90 would bring them out in the middle of ski slopes, golf courses, beaches, tennis clubs, anywhere there was a lot of people. Start of the conversation (loudly) with; 'Guess WHERE I AM CALLING FROM?.... HAHAHA!' I guess these sociopaths who were young then (20-40) are the ones who rule the planet today! A phone then costed around $10,000 and a call was around $2-4/min

Well, got my fancy new apple watch today. EE, have you gotten yours yet? If you do, we can send text messages back and forth with our watches.
I'm really looking forward to being a part of the apple watch family.

I thought the butterfly display was a nice touch. :) I can change it though. Oh this watch is a piece of shit, but it is the funniest damn thing I've seen in a long time. It's obnoxious, "bling" I think is the proper term for it. :)

The 'gold' looks like it will rub off soon. Whats battery life like? Does it communicate with your smartphone?

I just took a knife to the backside of it. Surprised, It looks like plated aluminum. It actually looks better in person, the photos I took suck. Unless you really look close it's obvious it's plated, but to an average person it would be convincing.
The watch does work with the phone. It works with bluetooth on the phone, and I can make calls with it.
I think the biggest challenge with this watch, is a cultural thing. It was designed on the cheap with a bunch of chinamen running around. It seems to get confused and then ask me questions. The screen will go blue, and a question will pop up, such as "phone dialer?" There's nothing to push on the screen to answer. At first, I thought wtf why is this watch asking me questions with no answers. Now, I figured out you have to push the crown button and start over. Other than that, everything seems to work just fine.

That's too funny! Better save it for when you go out in high style at the clubs. Don't break it before you can show it off.

EE, this watch is absolutely hilarious. It's design theme is this, imagine a bunch of chinamen thinking about how to make the biggest "mockery" of the apple watch there is. It's a huge joke. Wearing it honestly feels like you are laughing at the world. I can't keep a straight face with this watch, so I doubt I'll wear it much. I don't think I can pull the prank off.

I decided to test the pedometer function of the watch. I sat here doing nothing but reading online. After 5 minutes of doing nothing, the watch says I traveled 39 steps, 19 meters, and burned 1 calorie.

Well you seem to move around when sleeping, and not aware of it!
Why not when awake?
