I realize that diving up the weight over the length of the boat will prevent going through the ice, but if it were to go through the Ice how will you get the boat or yourself to the land. Wait for the night freeze, ice melt, or call a helicopter?

I suppose if you are still floating and have an implement you could smash away thin ice and gradually try and work yourself towards the thicker stuff. An oar would be useful.
