(Reuters) Target is cutting thousands of jobs within the next two years as part of a $2 billion cost-savings plan, the company announced Tuesday. The cuts will primarily affect positions at the company headquarters.
"The restructuring will be concentrated at Target's headquarters locations and focus on driving leaner, more efficient capabilities, removing the complexity and allowing the organization to move with greater speed and agility," the company said in a statement.
Target employs more than 350,000 workers globally. A more specific timeline for the job cuts will be revealed in the coming weeks and months, a spokeswoman told Business Insider.
"We have indicated to our team and our shareholders that we are moving quickly as we transform and are committed to making tough decisions," she said. She emphasized that the company has not made any comprehensive changes to any store-level positions or announced any plans to close US store locations in 2015.
Target CEO Brian Cornell told investors Tuesday that the company "lost its balance" after the recession, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/business/294837161.html).
He said Target needed to prioritize four main categories of merchandise: style, baby, kids, and wellness. Those categories accounted for more than a quarter of the company's sales last year.
Target will be investing more in its grocery offerings, he said.
"While we’re in the early days and there’s no doubt that transformation can be challenging, we’re taking the steps necessary to unleash the potential of this incredible brand," Cornell said. "I'm encouraged by our early momentum, and am confident that by implementing our strategy, simplifying how we work, and practicing financial discipline, we will ignite Target’s innovative spirit and deliver sustained growth."
Target is likely cutting jobs in part to recoup losses from its Canadian business, which the company recently abandoned.
The expansion into Canada cost Target about $4.4 billion and racked up more than $2 billion in losses.
Target had promised investors that the Canadian business, which was launched less than two years ago, would be profitable by the end of 2013.
The company hired Cornell in August and replaced the president of its Canadian operation to try to execute a turnaround. But its efforts failed.
Cornell announced in January that Target would be pulling out of Canada and closing more than 130 stores.

Target is a really clean rendition of Walmart. Workers always ask if you need help, go out of their way too. Prices are just a few penneys more than Walmart also. Wish there was one close to me.

I live in a town that's almost entirely White but I went to a Target in our town and only saw foreigners there. I saw a White goth girl and that was it. There were a bunch of Arabs and Indians (Slushy kind,) with their goofy dresses/robes. I thought I was back in California or something.

Translation: rather then paying a decent wage to our employees we extended credit to people we knew could not pay it back but we were only interested in the next quarter ...that self canabalization has finally come home to roost.

Were fooked.

I dunno, the Target by my house is staffed primarily, overwhelmingly with young people, probably late teens/early 20's. Kids this age are not supporting families, they're on the low end of the work force because almost all of the jobs are low skilled, entry level jobs. More likely Target sees the writing on the wall for the upcoming increase in minimum wage and is trying to get out of the way. I read that Target employs over 360,000 people. If 15% of those people are earning minimum wage, an increase of just $1 per hour means target is paying an additional $100 million annual for nothing.

We know 2 people working at walmart personally and they get over 16 an hour plus benefits. I know this isn't a big wage but it isn't the '90s either. The only minimum wages are entry level with no experience but after pre-established time they get increases. Seems there is hardly any turn over so there is something keeping them working there.

Amazon and other online retailers are destroying the real life retail sector. The only places left will be grocery stores and the grocery super stores like your Super Walmarts that have Grocery and Retail.

Automation is an exponential process that comes with exponential speed and technological advancements. It will be a norm soon for most people to be unemployed and dependent on the government.

Probably 95% of the population is dependent on some form of government. You have to count the state and municipal levels and those that do business solely with .gov.

This has been the norm for a long time.

Yeah that's true. Government jobs are a subtle form of welfare and a way to keep the government in power.

It's frustrating for me since I receive nothing from the government. I only pay and pay. Running a small business is tough. I'm like a milk cow.
