I called a local firearms instructor that I know from the Y.

Made an appointment for a 2 hour lesson tomorrow morning, with the 5.56 AR Rifle.

I basically want to learn "what all the buttons & knobs are for", and also get his opinion about the sight.

So we're meeting at a local Range.

I just printed out a bunch of "Sight in Target", 5 on cardboard & 5 on paper.

He said we'd be stapling it to a piece of wood, so that it doesn't matter too much what it's printed on.

This is the image I used for that -

Anyway, I think he's giving me a good deal - $25 per hour for 2 hours.

But I don't know if I want to buy the Bore Snake. ($17.50)

When someone buys a new gun, how soon before they need to worry about cleaning ? (assuming they don't drop it in the mud.)

I would think you'd have to fire a few thousand rounds before it needs cleaning ... but then, I'm a newb.

Question #2 -

How many rounds do you normally fire between cleanings ?

(or do you go more by how much time has gone by ?)

5.56x45 FMJ is back in the stores, $40 for 100 loose-pack American Eagle.

Bore snake as in cleaning?

Bore snakes are cool because they fit in a tiny space when not in use compared to standard rods with brushes and swab attachments. But imo only good for quick cleaning when in the field.

BUT imo they are not even close to using a one piece rod with the appropriate attachments, be careful when using brushes.

Clean your gun anytime after a days shooting and depending if shooting match between sets.

Repeat not 1000's of rounds between cleaning!

Learn how to field strip and clean an lube the gun correctly and do it after every time you take it out to shoot.

Even if stored it is a good practice to several times a year to break the gun down and clean and re lube.

Be careful about cleaning barrels, you do not want to over do it, I have known barrels ruined by over zealous "cleaning" !

Hajjis don't have access to bore snakes as we know them, they simply tie knots in boot laces and soak those in motor oil - that's their bore snake (and probably the inspiration for what we know as bore snakes).

I'll be happy to learn. Having just spent about $650 on the rifle and about $200 on bullets Magazines, a half decent case ... I feel like slowing down on the spending.

And just learn & practice.

At most ranges the people there will almost fall over themselves to help newcomers!

But be careful, because when it comes to calibers and loads you can ask 3 guys about a particular caliber and get 7 opinions!
