I just bought a 1/2 oz Gold Eagle with a date of the dealer's choice (I get it a tiny bit cheaper that way).
But the date is MCMLXXXVI.
OK, that works out to 1986. But I've bought a few of these and ALL of the others have dates in regular Arabic numerals, like all other coins.
Is this real? Has anyone else seen such a coin?

Nothing special. They made the 1st five years with roman numerals.
Here's the price guide if you care to look at which are the rarest in grades.

I prefer the roman numbering GAE's. I wish they did them all that way. Note, none of the silver eagles (SAE's) are in Ronan numerals.

Wonder what possessed them to change the method midstream?

That's pretty cool. Yes must dumb down the numbers for the sheeple.
