Firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire Thursday evening in the 4000 block of South Pulaski. (Chicago Fire Department)

A Chicago factory that makes chemicals for use in fire extinguishers was destroyed in a massive blaze Thursday night.

The extra-alarm fire broke out in the Archer Heights section of the city just after 9 p.m. at the industrial building on W. 38th Street, according to MyFoxChicago.com.

Within 30 minutes, the building, which housed several businesses in addition to the chemical factory, was completely engulfed in flames.

More than 150 firefighters responded to the scene and it took them nearly three hours to extinguish the fire. The crews had difficulty getting enough water to the building because of a lack of hydrants and had to perform an "inline operation," in which six trucks were spaced out over a mile and connected by hoses to pipe water, the Chicago Tribune reported.

High flames from the blaze could be spotted from miles away and thick black smoke choked a nearby highway.

The fire caused the roof to collapse and the building was damaged beyond repair. No one was injured and authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.

There should be a recall for their product.......it didn't work for them.

maybe the fire brigade used the wrong tools. If they had fire extinguishers it might have been a different story. Imagine piping water from 1 mile away.

Many years ago I gave our forest fighting department an idea........ it is a hand held balloon full of fire retandard with something equal to a M-80 inside with the fuse sticking outside, when you throw them, or drop them from a plane, it will explode the M-80 and this will spread the powder inside, ten feet radious........every firefighter should carry with them at least five of them that they could use in case of emergency, 4 ounces each.....I had my protos full of baking soda because I didn't have the real thing but it did work.

You could put them, and leave them, in your engine, fuse box, hang them from xmas trees, and so on.........I did make a special one for a xmas tree and then simply put it away.

Firefighters battled an extra-alarm fire .

WTF is an extra-alarm? There's no such thing as an extra alarm.

The problem I have these days, is I don't believe anything from the media. They are complete idiots. Every time I was in the media, each time my name spelled wrong, and everything about the story was wrong as well. Actually, I'm quite thankful for that...

Nonetheless, it's like they hired a bunch of monkeys to just make stuff up.
