Spring cleaning, I found a couple of 5 gallon gas cans full, old preps I had forgotten about. The gas in there has to be 4 years old. I'm pretty sure I had added stabil originally to them.
Can this gas be salvaged and used?

Does it smell like varnish?

Yep!
Also depends on how tightly sealed, if it was it may still be good or at least enough to mix with good gas.

I just checked. The cans let of a pressurized hiss when opening and the gas smells fresh surprisingly. Think I should treat it with more stabil?

Why not use it now and fill the cans with new stabilized gas?
Then worry in two more years!
Rotate it!

Thanks guys, I think I'll add a can at a time to the RV when I fill it up next. Then fill the can with new gas, add stabil, and do a better job of rotating my preps. I remember storing this for my generator.

I would recommend finding and using a product called PRI-G. I've put it in fuel to preserve it, and it works very well, but it can also be added to turned fuel (varnish) to revitalize it so that it will burn. No joke...awesome stuff. Expensive, however.

Be good for "slash pile" type burning.
An experienced woods person suggested the 50%-50% mix of gasoline and diesel.
So that gas could be old gas. Why waste new gas ?
It'll still burn, right ? Careful how you test this.

Anything that settled to the bottom should be removed. If it was non-ethanol, there is probably no sediment. It's good to run in non catalyst 4 cycle engines. Mix with fresh gas and you're good to go.

I found several two year old gas cans while moving over the weekend. I dumped them in the UHaul before returning it.

LOL, quite possibly the best way I've heard of getting rid of old gas. :) I added one old can 5 gallons on fill up, added 20 gallons of new gas to the tank of the RV. Drove 100 miles yesterday and everything seems fine. The big thirsty big block doesn't seem to care.
