Utah man returns 75-pound bag of cash found on highway

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man got a surprise when he stopped to pull a large orange bag off the highway, fearing that it would become a traffic hazard.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1BRXSdg ) the 75-pound bag tumbled out of a truck driving in front of Dan Kennedy on Interstate 80 on Tuesday. When he looked inside, he found stacks of cash.
"I thought it was going to be light. I reached down to grab it, and I couldn't move it," Kennedy said.
Approximately 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, the sack was filled with smaller bags packed with currency including $50 and $100 bills. Kennedy estimated each of the small bags contained $22,000.
It was unclear Thursday how much money the entire bag contained.
Kennedy tried but failed to chase down the Brink's armored truck that had lost the bag. He then drove the money to his work parking lot and called the police.
The three Utah Highway Patrol troopers were "stunned" at the bag of money, Kennedy said.
"Never in all my years have I heard of a bag of money bouncing out of the back of an armored truck," said trooper Brady Zaugg. "That's something that happens in the spy movies."
Kennedy said it never occurred to him to do anything other than turn in the money.
"He hadn't disturbed it at all, so he obviously did the right thing for the right reason," said Zaugg, who said Kennedy reported his find to the police immediately.
Brink's employees told police they drove over a bad bump on a highway off-ramp but didn't notice the back latch opening or the bag falling out.
Kennedy said he hasn't heard anything about a reward for his good deed, but he was still excited by the unusual discovery.
"I was just jazzed all day long," he said.

Great guy! I also would have not given a second thought about returning it. ... well maybe... umm empty the money out of the bags, send the bags on a bus to San Clemente. Let the cash rest for a year or two. trade bills in cash registers for laundering. spend. ;)

Well, I would have returned it. He saw it fall off the truck, he knew who the cash belonged too. It would be a different story if he had just found the cash, without knowing it's rightful owner, then finders keepers.

If a huge bag of money falls off a truck in front of me, I'd take it as a sign God wants me to have it. That wasn't grandma's life savings in the bag...it belonged to a Jewish bank.
Besides, you wouldn't know where I got the money and would still come to the party.
You will be well taken care of :)

Hahaha, my kid and me tweak the scooter he has, it's a 250 somefucking thing made in fuckgeristan I think. Does over a 100mph now to the point where I don't want to follow him to be sure. (My speedo is clock on exact to 140mph). More than that is too fucked up to do but my kid has no problems with teasing death. At least I am not on the thing.

When you put it that way, you could do a lot of good with that money actually. After the big party of course. Instead of that money going to the banks who fuck us over all the time, maybe it is a gift from God to that guy. A sign, to go out and do something to better the world than rape it like the banks do.

Totally feasible excuse there.
Must've been intended for the previous stop's bank manager to divide amongst Brink's employees..

Probably Apple. That is why we also have Madfranks, who is more cold blooded, and as last resort JQP, who could usually be found at the centre of the Universe, which very rarely is here...

The only reason for the existence of armored trucks and armed guards is to maintain the illusion that privately issued evidence of debt (i.e. FRNs) have any value.

Followup:
Can't Possibly Be True
Weird: Dan Kennedy of Salt Lake City was driving to work on March 31 when a large bag fell off of the truck in front of him, and, for traffic safety, he stopped to move it from the road -- and discovered it contained about 75 pounds' worth of U.S. currency (about $22,000) in a plastic bag marked with the name of the Brinks armored truck company. The bag remained sealed (any tear could have produced "leakage" weakening Brinks' claims on the loose money), and Kennedy dutifully contacted state troopers and handed it over. He sounded perplexed when Brinks immediately sent him a $5,000 gift check. "Why would I get anything for that?" "Almost anyone," he said, would have done what he did. [KSL-TV, 4-6-2015]
