Gertrude Weaver, 116, takes over the distinction of being the world's oldest person. (Danny Johnston, The Associated Press)
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An Arkansas woman who became the world's oldest person Wednesday wants President Barack Obama to attend her 117th birthday party this Fourth of July.
At 116, Gertrude Weaver was already the oldest person in America. With the death of 117-year-old Misao Okawa in Japan, Weaver became the world's oldest person, according to the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group, which tracks supercentenarians.
The Guinness Book of World Records still must make the final call, said Robert Moore, director of the research group's supercentenarians program.
"When people pass away, there is often an application process ... but they may not wait for that process to name her the oldest person in the world," he said. "Only five documented people have ever reached 117, and as of right now, Gertrude Weaver is the seventh-oldest verified person of all time."
Staff at the Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center in Camden, about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock, said Weaver was inundated by TV crews and visitors Wednesday.
Weaver, a former domestic worker in private homes and mother of four children, has experienced a lot in her 116 years, said Center Administrator Kathy Langley. She still has one dream she would like to realize.
"She really wants to meet the president. She's voted for him twice now, and it's just her lifelong dream," Langley said. "We sent him an invitation to come to her birthday party last year, and we will send him another one this year."
Langley said Weaver has no birth record and it's likely her family chose to celebrate her birthday on July 4 because they were patriotic.
Weaver was raised outside of Texarkana and has lived in Arkansas almost all of her life. The Gerontology Research Group used 1900 census records, which listed Weaver as 2 years old, and a marriage license from 1915 that listed her age as 17 to determine she was the oldest living American.
Weaver is in good health, Langley said, and attributes her longevity to treating others well.

The Japanese chick died when she was 117, the woman in the OP kicked the bucket at 116, how do you figure the woman in the OP was the oldest?

At that age, they're "hens", not "chicks".

She was the oldest person alive at the time, until she wasn't. Not the oldest person ever.

Because when you are drunk you make all sorts of crazy claims. I caught a fish this <------------------- -----> big. I leapt across a canyon on my motor bike. It started out as a book of crazy ass stunts people got up to when they got Guinessed up.
At least in my mind anyways.

Quite possible. The first Guinness book of records I got as a Christmas present was from 1975, 1976 or 1977 I think. I loved that book, I read it to pieces, literally, as a young boy, at that time it was the size of a normal book but a bit thicker, nowadays it is more like a coffee table book, with much more pictures, and the layout was much more linear then, so it was more suited to reading rather than glancing through it. I do think that book was very important in shaping my understanding of the world.
It took me another 20 years or so before I started appreciated drinking Guinness. When I studied in England I saw a Guinness world record in drinking a yard of ale (if I remember correctly it was 4 pints in a yard long glass), the guy sucked it down in somewhere around 11-12 seconds, and they had a Guinness 'official' to verify it. My memories of it was a bit blurry, since it was this pay £15 drink as much as you can nights at this night club/pub... But it should have been around 97/98 in either Bournemouth or Christchurch...

Worlds current oldest man died age 112. He took the crown from those mentioned previously in this thread.
In updated news a young upstart has claimed the crown of worlds oldest man. 111 year old Tokyo man Masamitsu Yoshida.
The worlds oldest person is a woman. So women can't be the worlds oldest woman, they can only be worlds oldest person? 116 year old Susanna Jones of Brooklyn NY.
