PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia family has been awarded the rights to 10 rare gold coins possibly worth $80 million or more after a U.S. appeals court overturned a jury verdict.
U.S. Department of the Treasury officials insist the $20 Double Eagles were stolen from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia before the 1933 series was melted down when the country went off the gold standard.
Prosecutors say Joan Langbord and her sons cannot lawfully own the coins she says she found in a family bank deposit box in 2003. A jury in 2012 agreed.
But the appeals court ruling Friday returns the coins to the Langbords because U.S. officials didn't respond in time to the family's claim for the seized property.
A Treasury spokeswoman has no immediate comment on the ruling.

I hope the family gets to keep it. All the government has to do is restart the process from scratch, no law applies to them. That's probably why they didn't bother about or care about any time frame. Laws are for the commoners, not for those who write the laws.

This is called a default judgement.

Thought we went off the gold standard in 1971?
They also declared it illegal to own gold and silver coins before the great depression. Had to turn them in for face value. After that the price doubled in 1 day to fuck everyone that did turn them in. (I believe that is correct)

The government can either appeal to the full circuit for a rehearing en banc then appeal to the Supreme Court or go directly to the Supreme Court.

It would be long term capital gains - I guess they could let them have the coins, they sell them, and then get millions out of it in the taxes.

One could posit the argument they aré legal tender US coins, face valué $20.00. If they aré not sold for numismatic value there is no capital gain. Just my dos centavos.

I remember this case.
The family was jewish.
And your answer is it will not be appealed
Even though the gubbermint is about seizing money out of your account that you lawfully own with recirpts for as little as 500 dollars
They are going to forget to file paperwork to snooker 80 million?
Who is fooling who?
Calls where made behind the scences and the wolves were told to back off.
Believe it.
Expect to see a short story/movie/articles about how this brave jewish family was victimized by the gubbermint.
You herd it on GSUS first.
