as a matter of fact I am a 85% rawfoodist and the first thing I learned when starting this diet is that milk is only good for new borns and toddlers as long as it is their mother's own milk... in nature there arent mammals drinking another species' milk.

How we got duped into believing milk is necessary for healthy bones
Monday 20th April 2015

Several years ago, Alissa Hamilton investigated America’s love affair with orange juice in her book Squeezed. She uncovered all sorts of misconceptions about the breakfast staple’s virtuousness (most of the health claims about orange juice and vitamin C are inflated) and its origins (most OJ actually comes from Brazil, not Florida).

Now Hamilton has trained her sight on another much-loved beverage: milk. In Got Milked? she argues that milk is not the healthy bone-builder governments and the dairy industry have led us to believe. I spoke with her about our big milk misconceptions, how milk became such a pervasive commodity, and whether there are better places to get calcium.’....................

JB: What are our most inaccurate assumptions about milk?

AH: Milk is the only food that makes up an entire food group. If you look at it logically, it doesn’t deserve that special status any more than pumpkin seeds deserve that just because they’re high in magnesium — which is an essential nutrient Americans are low in.

Even the dairy industry recognizes that milk is not essential to health. They can’t counter that fact. Their comeback is that milk and milk products are the most convenient form of calcium. But that argument doesn’t hold anymore.

That’s part of what I want to reinforce with the book and recipes in the book, to show how easy it is to get all the nutrients we need without milk or milk products. The National Dairy Council recognizes that foods like kale, bok choy, and broccoli all have higher rates of calcium absorption than milk. Who knew that two tablespoons of dried, ground basil have almost the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk?* We don’t know that because we have this dairy food group, which has created a crutch for people who don’t think about getting calcium in places other than milk.

JB: Why are we so gullible about unfounded health claims?

AH: It’s not all that surprising, because that’s all we’ve heard. We’ve only heard from the dairy industry and government agencies that are built to support agricultural commodities like dairy. So you have the USDA creating the dietary guidelines — but it’s also there to support agriculture. There’s a conflict there.

We accept health messages from the dairy industry. But they’re a food business like any other, like Coca-Cola. In general, we don’t think Coke is out to better the world. We know they’re a company and the bottom line is what they’re after. But we don’t think about that when we read dairy industry advertising.

*Update: To clarify, two tablespoons of dried ground basil have almost the same amount of calcium as one cup of 1% milk (220 grams compared to 240 grams). The original transcript did not specify whether the leaves were ground or not.

Milk The Deadly Poison
This is a 1998 Hard Copy Special on MILK. What the government doesn't want you to know about milk. Don't drink milk, we know it contains fat and cholesterol but did you know it contains the protein CASEIN (which is basically a glue which leads to a lot of mucous build up and other health problems like asthma and congestion), milk also contains.. powerful growth hormones, viruses, a host of deadly chemical and biological bacterial agents, bovine proteins that cause allergies, insecticides, antibiotics, all this can trigger the growth of cancer and contributes to today's problem of obese children (ever notice why young girls breasts develop faster?). Cow's milk is the number one allergic food in this country. It has been well documented as a cause in diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne. It is the primary cause of recurrent ear infections in children. It has also been linked to insulin dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and leukemia. Milk and refined sugar make two of the largest contributions to food induced ill health in our country.

ok so its not strictly the milk thats at issue, its the things in it. Bit like cigarettes. Its what is added to the tabacco that is the problem. SO natural milk. the raw stuff maybe?

Anyone here hand reared a cow? that would be a calf? Ever fed them milk? They produce a fair bit of mucous when they are feeding. Perhaps we better stop them drinking it as well.

There's nothing wrong with the fat if it's good chelating fat. I would never drink low fat milk. That is for sure a waste of time. I use milk for cereals, coffee and fat burning (whey) after exercise. Got to be fuller in fat.

I think this is backdoor Agenda 21. Like the "we need to exterminate the cows because they fart methane" meme. The reality is they are an extremely efficient protein source compared to chewing 4 kilos of human cud everyday.

sure, raw milk when not drunk daily is fine... but I really feel the difference when I have eaten dairies after going for weeks without it/them. I am just bloated, even when it's organic.

but I truly believe that milk is very overstated, it all comes down to $$

Well, since raw milk is effectually banned and illegal for general consumption pretty much everywhere, that leaves regular milk and that milk is not good for creating health in humans, regardless of its calcium content.

Calcium is not even the primary nutrient for building bones. Magnesium, phosphorous, and silica build bones better than calcium.

I don't recall mentioning calcium AND your response just goes back to my comment. It's not the milk but whats in it that is the problem. They add poisons via food for the cows or injections into the cow or its udder AND/OR kill the milk that is produced and then people say all milk is bad for you on that basis.

I have no particular problems with milk. I try to avoid the reconstituted stuff which can be in storage for many months before being reconstituted for sale. I also try to avoid the reduced fat types, as I don't think this is actually milk and more likely some kind of chalk water. And I also try to avoid ones with added sugar and other things like powdered milk or glucose to boost it up.

I understand lactose intolerance is to do with the sugars in milk. Question is, are the sugars lactose or some other sugar added to the milk? Like Gluten intolerance is not due to the consumption of regular heirloom wheat but newer modified strains that are selected for high levels of gluten which enhance elasticity/sponginess of the dough or bread. If the wheat was more natural, would as many people have an intolerance of it.

Given that the intolerance is a new thing, perhaps a 5 or so years old fad, I'd say no. Fewer people would have problems.

It's a baby and bathwater problem.

Switched to coconut milk years ago. I don't even remember what cow's milk tastes like, and don't feel any need to find out.

I drink a fair bit of organic milk. I don't drink it for the calcium but the protein. It also helps settle my stomach; No bloating here...
