BALTIMORE — Prosecutors here, in an unexpected announcement, said Friday that they had filed homicide, manslaughter and misconduct charges against police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, who died after sustaining a spinal cord injury while in police custody.
In a news conference, the state’s attorney in Baltimore, Marilyn J. Mosby, described repeated mistreatment of Mr. Gray. Time and again, she said, officers abused him, arresting him without grounds and violating police procedure by putting him in handcuffs and leg restraints in the van without putting a seatbelt on him.
Ms. Mosby also said the officers had repeatedly failed to seek medical attention for Mr. Gray after he was injured. By the time he was removed from the van, she said, “Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all.”
“We have probable cause to file criminal charges,” Ms. Mosby said.

Ms. Mosby also said that the knife the police say Mr. Gray was carrying had not been a legitimate basis for his arrest. “The knife was not a switchblade, and it is lawful,” she said. She said the officers had “failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”

As she announced the charges at the War Memorial here, there was cheering from people in the crowd. Dozens of police officers dressed in riot gear stood nearby after days of unrest in the city.
Ms. Mosby said six officers were being charged, one with second-degree murder. She said warrants had been issued for the their arrests; she said she did not know if anyone was in custody.
One officer, Caesar R. Goodson Jr. was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Lt. Brian W. Rice was charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Officer William G. Porter and Sgt. Alicia D. White were each charged with manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Officers Edward M. Nero and Garrett E. Miller were charged with assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.

The lead officer, Lt. Bryan Rice, is the one who started all of this. In 2012 Rice was reported by his police officer girlfriend as having mental health issues. Rice was hospitalized and had is guns taken away, then reinstated. Was hospitalized again for threatening someone in private time with a gun. Rehospitalized. Reinstated.

The force required to break a neck is immense, especially in a fit 25 year old man. It happening accidentally in a police van is beyond belief. Hitting him very hard in the neck with a baton could do it, a fist or wrestle probably not.

I wonder ?
The guy was bound with arms behind the back and legs shackled! But not attached to the van, If on the floor head to the front with a maybe slick metal floor, and the driver is going fast then hits the brakes hard!
That the guy could slide and slam into the back wall head first with all his body mass/weight behind the hit, that maybe is enough to snap his neck!
I for one can see the possibility!

You mean he swiveled around 180° at the hard break? Yes that could possibly do it? Or he got somehow up on his knees as they did a sharp turn and hit his neck over a sharp corner of a box very hard with his body weight behind, may do it too...

Study Finds ‘Presence of Professional Protesters to Incite More Violence’ in Baltimore and Ferguson

‘If the Baltimore riots seem like a tired replay of Ferguson, there might be a good reason as to why.
A data mining firm with government ties that tracks social media reported that they uncovered a core group of accounts who appear to have driven much of the buzz and even more of the calls to actions by crowds on the ground.
The online activity of a few dozen of the same individuals were linked and timed with key moments in Baltimore and Ferguson, leading up to the most intense cases of both sustained demonstrations and episodes of violent riots in both of these cities.’

Why all 6? Why not just the police wagon driver that failed to put a seat belt on Grey causing the injuries?
And now Sharpton(Obamas butt buddy) is calling for the federalization of the police forces around the nation!
This dovetails nicely with obamas desire to create a national force equal to the military. It also explains the militarization of the police and the huge investment in ammo and arms.
Looks like everything is working out toward the 2016 elections for whatever evil plan these thugs have in the works!

What I find amazing here is with all the cop bashing with video's showing their misdeeds over the years here. And the collective wish that the bad cops would pay for their crimes against people of all stripes and races.
That when the cops finally get caught red handed with video proof, it seems some here are siding with the cops that seem to be guilty, (I say because they have not been to trial)
This one and the shooting, are so far the clearest example of their guilt and defending ones race is one thing but bad cops act against all of us. I do hope this Start's a change to make cop's more responsible to the public for their acts and not to be able to get away with murder and only suffer a paid vacation!
IMHO !

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said that most of the city’s police officers were good, but added,
“To those who choose to engage in violence, brutality, racism and brutality, let me be clear: There is no place in the Baltimore Police Department for you.”
You said "brutality" twice!
I like brutality!
