I decided to finally take a remote back-road "trick route" I'd always wanted to try bypassing Tonopah on the way up from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada.

I love Nevada. I've explored a lot of it. Did you now that about 85% of Nevada is owned by BLM. That means you can park your camper almost anywhere for the night and camp. Furthermore, you can stake a gold claim on the land. With a claim, you can stay on the land indefinitely and the only thing you can't do is put up any permanent structures.

People are very friendly too. In one small town I got gas. I went inside to get a cup of coffee and nobody was around. A young gal came out from the back and surprised me. One of the most beautiful gal's I think I've ever seen. Tall, blonde cowgirl type. I wanted to marry her on the spot and move to that town.

Check out this place, Shami. Flyfishing right off your front porch. I would love a cabin like this. Everyone should move to Idaho. Plus, it's close to Book, I could pester him all the time, that would be a bonus.

Sure. I like him even though I don't agree with him on everything.

Probably siesta time and the meskins are horizontal. A town with no people. I wouldn't have noticed the lack of people unless someone pointed it out. If I walked through the desert and didn't see any rattlers or scorpions I wouldn't have missed them either. People are what's wrong with towns.

That drive between Las Vegas and Reno was one of my favorites when I was driving truck. Lots of miles and very few people. Not much traffic either. Several brothels along the way too. I was going past the "Wildcat Ranch" late one night and one of the girls there got on the cb and tried to call me in just like she would if she was settin out a bowl of milk for the cats. She said " heeerre trucker, trucker, trucker". :-)

I've heard them on the CB also when I was doing road construction near Hawthorne or on an occassinal trip to Reno with scrap iron or going for supplies.

They are sirens, per folklore. Happens in the middle of nowhere, or in the middle of the sea. It would be best to stay away from them, if you can.

The only requirement to live there is you must have at least one broken down vehicle on your property, visible from the street at all times...

A cowboy song written about that country by Dave Stamey called Tonopah.

Tonopah

I carry my saddle
By the side of the road
Hard rains fallin'
Wind blowin' cold
East across the mountains here Nevada sings
Tellin' me it's time to hurry home
And I'd fly there now if I had wings
Go soaring back to Tonopah
Headlight glowin'
The cars hurry past
Just like the years
Are flowin' so fast
If I can get there I know I'll be warm
The ackin' in my bones will soon be gone
I fear the darkness of this coming storm
And I journey back to Tonopah

Oo oo, oh the night is fallin'
Oo oo, oh hear Nevada callin'
Hot dry and wind blown country callin' me
Out where those shadows run so tall
Hot dry and wind blown country I can hear you callin' me
Callin' me back to Tonopah

There I was young
There I was brave
There was a warm kiss waitin'
At the end of the day
Every thing I wanted I left waitin' there
Now I see the things I never saw
My dreams are shattered now and no one cares
So I'm goin' back to Tonopah

Oo oo, oh the night is fallin'
Oo oo, oh hear Nevada callin'
Hot dry and wind blown country callin' me
Out where those shadows run so tall
Hot dry and wind blown country I can hear you callin' me
Callin' me back to Tonopah

If I can reach the desert I know I'll be young again
I'll touch my woman's face
And things will be as they were then
Bad horses work and whiskey
Have left me tired and sore
And I got no use for wanderin' any more

I turn up my collar
Turn my face to the wind
Trucks run the line
Seems my chances are slim (of getting a ride)
East across the mountains here Nevada sings
Tellin' me it's time to hurry home
I pick up my saddle and head for all the things
I left waiting there in Tonopah

Oo oo, oh the night is fallin'
Oo oo, oh hear Nevada callin'
Hot dry and wind blown country callin' me
Out where those shadows run so tall
Hot dry and wind blown country I can hear you callin' to me
Callin' me back to Tonopah

I grew up in Drano (Reno). We call it Drano now because it was a small homogeneous town when I grew up; now it's little Sacramento. Anyway, way back then, one of the things to do with your friends in high school was to take "the ride" out to the Mustang Ranch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustang_Ranch). After having a few, you'd drive out there late on a Fri/Sat night, walk up to what appears to be a dark, abandoned house, ring the doorbell, wait for about a minute, then the door would open and you were greeted with about 40 scantily clad women lined up in front of you. To a 16-18yr old, this is quite an intimidating experience! We knew and they knew nothing was going to happen. Anyway, they were accustomed to such visits and they'd bring us in, take us to a booth, and treat us like a regular customer. A few of these scantily clad ladies would hang out and talk with us for about 10-20 mins., and then it was time to go. Again, being 16-18yrs old, sitting in a booth surrounded by these seductive women wearing very little, was pretty crazy. After my first "ride" out there, I woke up the next morning and realized I couldn't find my wallet. I had an extreme panic attack thinking I left it at the Mustang Ranch. Surely, they'd soon be calling and alerting my parents that my wallet was at the whore house! Talk about shitting bricks. I eventually found it under my car seat, so catastrophe averted ...

My goodness that was a good short story!

I never carried a wallet myself, cash in one front pocket, cards in the other. Keys always hooked to a belt loop. Never as of yet been scammed. In shady areas the cash and cards go into my socks, which has saved me on a couple accounts. Always leave a couple dollar bills in a back pocket to prove you have nothing.

Now I carry a gun so I don't need to stash stuff in my socks.

Not that this would have helped in a brothel since most likely the socks would come off. I am just amazed at what a person carries in a wallet. Seriously it is a link to their entire life.
