Bacon Prices Plummet After Hitting All-Time High Posted: 05/22/2015 2:37 pm EDT Updated: 47 minutes ago

Bacon prices rose consistently for nearly five years, reaching an all-time high of $6.11 a pound in June 2014 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/01/bacon-prices-2014_n_5642973.html?1432239096). But now they've finally started to drop.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest Consumer Price Index report, released Friday morning, showed that the price of a pound of bacon (http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/APU0000704111) averaged $5.21 in U.S. cities in April 2015, the lowest level since May 2013. That means it fell by nearly 15 percent between June 2014 and April 2015

Recently released USDA data showed an even steeper price drop of 25 percent in the past year (http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/20/news/economy/bacon-25-percent-cheaper-in-america/).

Industry analysts attributed the fall (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/27/pork-prices-falling_n_6555726.html) to a recovery in the size of the American hog herd after a devastating viral epidemic killed 8.5 million piglets across the country in 2014 (http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/08/us-usa-pigs-insight-idUSKBN0LC0IV20150208). USDA data showed that the size of the herd was up 7 percent in March 2015 (http://usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda/current/HogsPigs/HogsPigs-03-27-2015.pdf) compared to a year earlier.

To be sure, bacon prices remain very high by the standards of recent history, even after inflation is taken into account. In inflation-adjusted terms, bacon is still more expensive than it was at any point before the summer of 2013.

Bacon prices tend to be lowest in the first four months of the year, so it's possible they could rise as the temperature heats up and brings the consumer appetite for BLTs along with it.

Still, the recent dip is good news for bacon-loving grocery shoppers, who may have been forced to cut back on their favorite cured meat because of sky-high prices. And it comes just in time for Memorial Day weekend barbecues. Bring on the bacon cheeseburgers!

This is kind of weird.

I heard a variation of this headline on the am radio this morning. Do a search and you will find variations of the same headline.

Egg prices jump as impact of bird flu begins pinching supply (http://www.kitco.com/news/2015-05-19/Egg-prices-jump-as-impact-of-bird-flu-begins-pinching-supply.html)

Then I look at these egg futures charts. I don't know anything about them though. I didn't know there were egg futures charts either.

Prices are going up. Ribeye steaks at Trader Joe's were $7.99 a pound, now they are $8.99 a pound. Their bacon is still $5.99 a pound of the good stuff.

God bless bacon. Bacon is really a blessing and a gift from God, I believe. It's hard to put a price on it. I just say thank you God for this bacon. Dollar's don't mean much in the big grand scheme of things.

Ribeye here in gods country still lies at 12.99 lb. The most bland marble-less meat you ever saw too.

I think it's good to invest in a freezer chest, and stick it in some corner of your home that doesn't get a lot of traffic.

Whenever there's a good meat deal buy in bulk.

Like usually the week after St. Patrick's Day I load up on corned beef since it's usually dirt cheap then, and use it throughout the year.

I look at those charts, and I don't see "plummet". I see that after a significant drop, it remains at it's highest inflation-adjusted price ever.

Maybe something wrong with the 'inflation-adjust'?

Corned beef is one of the least sexy of the salted cured meats.

This is what I do since the local community market gouges the neighborhood. Eight bucks for a dozen eggs. Plus a extra dollar if you swipe plastic. I don't set foot in there out of principle. That and his hook nose. I wait until I have to go down the hill to do my shopping. Even the large chain grocery stores are expensive. Two bucks for a head of red leaf lettuce. Oddly, gas is thirty cents a gallon cheaper than down in suburbia.
