Mother found pushing deadtoddler on swing in Maryland park

(Reuters) - A Maryland mother was found early on Friday pushing her dead 3-year-old boy on a park swing, authorities said.
Deputies responded to a call around 7 a.m. to check on a woman who witnesses said had been pushing a child for hours on a swing at Wills Memorial Park in La Plata, about 35 miles (55 km) south of Washington, D.C., said Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson.
One witness told deputies she found it strange that the woman had been pushing the child for an unusually long period of time, possibly since the day before, Richardson said.
When the officers arrived they found the 24-year-old woman still pushing the child in the swing, and they realized immediately that the boy was dead, Richardson said.
The child had no signs of obvious trauma, she said, and had been dead for at least several hours.
The office of the chief medical examiner in Baltimore will perform an autopsy on the boy.
The mother, who was not identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for medical tests, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.

Prayer sent for that woman. One of the saddest stories I think I've read.

Some people process grief differently. Even a cow will lick her calf for hours after it dies. Losing a child can mess people up. Not all that unreasonable to think a mother awash with grief would take her child's body to a place he enjoyed. Weird, but kind of understandable.

so they are now saying that the boy was alive when they went to the park but after nearly 2 days of sitting on the swing he dies of exposure/hypothermia.

Father was in the process of trying for custody of the child.

US boy found on swing died of hypothermia and dehydration, autopsy finds

The story was chilling and heartbreaking: A three-year-old boy was found dead in a Southern Maryland park in the United States, his mother pushing him on the swing.

More than a month after Ji'Aire Donnell Lee's death, the Charles County Sheriff's Office revealed more terrible details: Ji'Aire was alive when his mother put him on the swing. He stayed on it for almost two days.

A medical examiner's office has ruled that Ji'Aire's death was a homicide. He died due to hypothermia and dehydration during his long time on the swing, the sheriff's office said on Tuesday. The autopsy report will be sent to the Charles County state's attorney's office, which will decide whether to file charges against Ji'Aire's mother, Romechia Simms.

Kristen Ayers in the state's attorney's office said that prosecutors have not yet received the autopsy report, so they cannot say whether they will bring charges against Ms Simms.

Ji'Aire was dead when police found his mother pushing him (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/mother-found-pushing-dead-three-year-old-on-a-swing-in-md-park/2015/05/22/b2acd6fe-00b6-11e5-805c-c3f407e5a9e9_story.html) in Wills Memorial Park on the morning of May 22. At the time, police were unsure when and how Ji'Aire died.

On Tuesday, the sheriff's office said that their investigation revealed that Ms Simms, 24, arrived at the park in La Plata with her son on May 20 about 11.15am.

Ms Simms, who had experienced a previous mental breakdown, stayed in the park for nearly 44 hours, pushing Ji'Aire on the swing. Early in the morning on May 22, someone who had spotted the mother and son at the park the day before called police to say that it was unusual that they were still there.

At 6.55am, after a night in which the temperature fell to 10 degrees, police found the dead child and his mother in the park.

The police account differs from the timeline previously offered to the Washington Post by Ms Simms' mother, Vontasha Simms, who was living with her daughter and grandson at a motel in La Plata.

Vontasha Simms said Ji'Aire, a chubby-cheeked preschooler nicknamed "Sumo", had gone to the Dollar Store and Burger King with his mother on May 21 before leaving for the park that evening.

When they didn't come back, Vontasha Simms said she grew worried and called her daughter at 12.30am on May 22. Romechia assured her mother that they were on their way home.

Diane Richardson, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said Vontasha Simm's account was incorrect. The mother and son spent two nights in the park.

"It's definitely Wednesday. That we know for a fact," Ms Richardson said. "There were witnesses there. There's no indication that she left."

Sick... I had hoped a different decision. Kids are kids, all innocent till a later date. When they have no chance I have no mercy on the gate keepers.

Story sucks all around. Something doesn't seem right though, 10 degrees on May 21? This world sure has gone to shit though thanks to people. Went to the scrap yard yesterday and saw a dead pit bull on the side of the road chained to a shopping cart. Really screwed with my head the rest of the day. Glad I don't have young ones.

May 20th and they say it fell to 10 degrees? I have lived in the area my entire life and I have never seen 10 degree temps in may! Not that it matters in the story... it just stuck out at me!

Celsius my friend.

That works !

Trying to slip a logical scale reading to us illogical Fahrenheit users ;)

Going metric is the first step down the slippery path that has infected most of the world ! And see how they have lost freedoms compared to the states here. -----Grin !

Next thing they will want to change will probably be the Dewey decimal system, bastards !

Very bizarre story. A 48 hour + mental breakdown... Poor child, poor mother, poor father.

It also seems wrong that no witness ever went over to check on them, even to say hi, and perhaps respond.

I thought the same thing, ximmy. We've reached a sad place where folks either don't care, don't notice, or just plain don't want to get involved with each other.
