I do not care or like anything win 8! The spec's sound alright tho!

I use win 7 pro and love it, IMO they got it right with this one, it is what vista should have been!

Looks good! I need to get away from laptop's and go back to boxes, ....Naw.. Takes up room!

I do not care for Dell personally, but they make some good machines.. Sometimes! ;)

More cussing used a storage drive to trouble shoot, while loading the op system for temp use until I get a new drive.

At the very last steps of getting things so maybe I can pull a restore from a backup, the dam cuss cuss cuss power went down here, still down am on gen power!

Had to start the whole dam thing again!

At least doing this stuff for over 30 years I am used to spending hours days and sometimes weeks! Remember low level formatting 40 meg RLL drives could take over 24 hours back in the day.....;)

Cussing dam storms!! Plus hardware!!

Got to love them!

Friend when a hard drive decides to crap out sometimes they give no warning and then even Kay y does not helps the butt hurt, has nothing to do on how full the drive is!

I suspect heat killed mine?

Good to see you posting amigo !

Very good reminder to those of us that let things get slack!

Backups are our friends, but restoring to the point of using a backup with a different drive is a pain, cuss, cuss but part of the wonderful world of computers!

Waiting to see if this box can reboot after all the crap, then I will know a new drive is needed, was a 750 gig may go to a one gig just for the giggles.

Thank god for tablets for internet fixes!!!

:)

If they that read this, pull a backup and also make sure your recovery disks are current!

Just saying!

Gotta love computers but they will bite out just when you really need them! They are out of mind hardware wise until they dump on you! Or like women take them for granted and then watch out! ;)

Feeling all sorts of warm and fuzzy here, still on gen power!

Would be hard pressed to use a box and all where I use my laptop! Plus size of boxes makes parts are easy to replace, bad is size of that box and its vitals!

Most laptop's can be repaired by the user, but! ! ! ! Not cut and dry easy as a box!

Now it is a crap shoot on the lower end of the scale, even the higher scales!

Best to look at buyer reviews, you are looking for durability in lifetime and use before it craps out on you. Tho most all the name brands are sorta easy to repair with parts available at reasonable prices when they do take a dump on you!

Consumer item, made to last maybe as long as the mfg warranty holds today. So when it breaks they can sell another one!

Tho MTBF is now better than in the past!

Will setup this temp disk as best updated and configuration as I can for use until the new one gets here!

But have an ace to use, when I get my new drive I will have a better and quicker chance to get it up and running by creating a boot primary cloned partition! Then set this temp drive aside as a working save my ass disk external boot able usb drive.

What a paranoid bunch , the drive that failed was a 750 gig that was maybe 6 tenths used, a one terra was in some ways cheaper than another 750!

Tho adding up my external storage drives laying around is close to 7 Terra bites with room to spare! :)

Been into computers for over 30 years and I try and archive most of my old software because I can never know when it may become useful when I run across old systems that are still running.

Dell is not so bad a product. It seems that some brands are better in some countries than others.

Toshiba is very good. I have had several notebooks and they last with very few issues. I may have replaced a hard drive in one. Another one I dropped and smashed the screen but the units themselves go until Windows bloats so much they run like dogs. Then your are 5 years down the road anyway.

But I read that in the US, the Toshiba are considered rubbish.

Now. There are different levels of product. I don't buy computers/notebooks from big box stores. The reason is, is that they are consuimer products and build to a price. Plastic chassis and cheap hard drives etc. In my experience and I said before the Warranty is the best indicator of the life of a computer product or component. If the manufacturer will only back it for 12 months then that is the expected life of it. Any more is a bonus or a problem depending on what you do when the 12 months is up.

If its a HDD and you are not either replacing it or backing up frequently after 12 month mark, you are going to have issues when it craps out. You can buy hard drives with 3 year warranty. So do that if you can afford it.

Toshiba make business grade units that you wont get at the big box shop, likewise business computer dealers are probably not going to have access to the product lines the big box guys have.

Dell is basically the same. I think they are a little bit slower than a PC built by your local computer shop but if you buy from the business range it should last you.

HP is the same as the other guys. Two or more range of product although I would choose Lenovo over HP notebooks. HP Business desktops are still ok.

Lenovo make good stuff, again if you buy right. They have long been a favourite for companies with big road warrior sales forces. Due to the solid chassis and well isolated internals. Not sexzee but reliable and solid.

Never ever buy Acer.

I run a script to this flash drive from each PC, backing up the full C drive of each PC every night.

Do and redo wash and repeat!

It sucks when the last time doing this was long enough that dumb mistakes are made because the exact procedures are forgotten! Make a boo boo and start from the beginning again, but this time may be will get it right. Last time today thought I was done and set! But got my first virus in more years than I can remember! Or something in the install triggered it!

One that screwed up .exe program associations so nothing runs except media player. Click any program and media player opens!

No hope but go back to factory image, then my win pro image backup. Twice because this last time I selected the factory image and not my backup image, and once started there is no turning back ! :(

Pulling a backup and image on the new working drive/system now. Its almost finished. Finally after many try,s having to relearn what I used to know, now if I had to do it again it would only take hours and not days. Think now not a virus but the java that I had to install for one of my camera programs that screwed up my file association tables? :( along with shooting myself in the foot, multiple times !

Got to love them, even if you want to hammer them on an anvil sometimes !

Tho it is nice at some sites to click on a download and zip it is done, compared to my old speed.

I have used many imaging/backup software programs from windows built in program which sucks big donkeys that may or not work, to other programs. Some that seem you need a university degree to use them because they are so complex or seem so.

This round of fixing my system I looked and found a reliable (works and is Timex simple to use) program to save my ass the next time a hard drive crapes out. In the course of rebuilding I made mistakes that forced me to do a major recovery trying to get my system back to where I wanted it.

This program did the job, I had to re-save my ass several times rebuilding and this program was sweet, besides that it is quick and does not take a year plus one day to do the job, unlike windows backup (when it works) and others like it.

Highly recommend plus it is free !

I used that as backup once, I would rather clone my C drive than have a backup of this:

http://gold-silver.us/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=7597&stc=1

WD used to have a floppy to clone your drive when you bought a new one. Took forever but you get an identical copy of what you want instead of compressed mystery files. That is what I want to do so I have no down time, just boot into the backup drive and clone it back to a new drive once it arrives. Any way to do this now?

Yes, I have 3 drives in my PC. No laptop involved. I have the main drive C: and D: is where I store all my program data files, bookmarks, email etc. Basically it's a crude backup itself. The other drive is a dedicated backup. I want to be able to clone both on separate drives. Was not a problem when I ran 3 different machines because I would backup everything amongst those. Now I only run 1 PC so it is a worry in the back of my mind. I am wondering if I can put the old WD clone software on a cd and boot from that to clone things... Now that sounds like an idea I just thought of. Hmmm.

gparted is a good way to repartition. Just need to think it through as you go. pretty sure you can get bootable CD's for it.

cloning, ghost32 or macrium reflect work well. You used to be able to find ghost images out there that didn't need licensing. I think macrium might cost a few bucks.

Reflect is still free and it is what I have been using, I like it. I am only interested in the imaging part which worked for me, several times during this system rebuild saving my ass because of my brain farts installing and setting up programs due to crs, its fast, and more importantly it works. Had to make a down load for a utility from Microsoft to make the reflect recovery disk using the windows preinstallation environment to make a live cd/dvd but reflect handled that part.

Recommended, first imaging program I have used that is so straight forward and compared to the built in mircosoft imaging package in speed, well there IS no comparison.

Free is good, and even better when it works well.

D: 150GB for my Data files
F: 800GB for my MP4 movies

M: 50GB for the OS Backup Restore Image
N: 150GB Clone of my Data files
O: 800GB Clone of my MP4 movies

I don't use any cloning software. I just use Windows Explorer and drag folders back and forth between the two hard drives. If one physical drive dies everything is still on the other drive. Poor man's RAID array...lol.

I've used this setup for years. It's very effective. You can leave it connected like a normal hard drive on your desk pernamently, or use it temporarily. It has a fan to keep it cool and you get the reliability/stability of an internal hard drive. These enclosures can handle hard drives up to 4 GB I think and you're connecting to eSata so it's basically the same speed as the internally connected hard drives.

Maybe or not, if it is that old!

Hardware compatibility may bite you in the ass, laptops are the worst because of fixed hardware. At least a desk top things can be replaced/upgraded

Windows is notorious at making some hardware obsolete as far as compatibility goes!

Also hardware makers want to sell their latest and greatest, and may or not update the drivers of their older stuff. So it forces users to buy new,, good for profits and keeping their doors open.

Sorry, reread your post and I responded thinking you wanted to upgrade your operating system, using your present computer.

Both XP and win7 are good op systems. And a heated argument can get going debating which is the better one in a instant!

Personally I like win7 better, by a slim margin.

I think laptops are ok if you keep the original OS or the next one that comes along. Beyond that you are going to hit hardware problems. Desktops are slightly better, you might be able to extend it to 2 further OS releases but again, beyond that it gets difficult. Hard ware will evolve and eventually even a desktop will hit the obsolescence wall.

backups are the key. You can do like Shami. Its a good option as you get the speed missing from USB. And you can redeploy old drives as backup drives if you want to. Although don't use ones that are more than a couple years old unless you can bear to lose the contents. Portable USB drives are very cheap now as well and a no brainer plug and play option for people, including those less technical minded.

Samsung is the only manuf. that builds everything in those units. Everyone else gets their scraps. the percentage returned or rma'd probably has to do more with consumer replacement ignorance than manuf.

Wonder what percentage is of regular spun hard drive failures are for year on year?

It was one of my external hard drives that saved my bacon until I got this new one. When the hard drive failed I took the drive out of one of my usb external drive housings and installed it in the laptop. Then I rebuilt my op system from my factory disks and using my key that I stored I pulled the upgrade from the Microsoft site to get back to win7 pro. Then reinstalled my programs from scratch where I had to. Also found the crashed drive only lost the ability to boot, everything else was still there, so I was able to use the usb external sata interface to connect to it and transfer all my stuff that I could from it to the new drive, and now I am thinking of using that drive as a usb external storage drive, did some tests and it has come up clean, somehow just the boot record/sector got corrupted.

By the time the new 1 terabyte got here several days later, I was ready to install it by making an image of the save my ass drive first then installing the new drive then restoring the image to it.

Once done, I stuck a label on the drive I used to bridge the gap until the new one got here and will keep it.

Now if and when the new drive fails, I can take the save my ass drive and stick it in, it is fully boot-able and ready to go, it will be a ready to go plug and play drive that will save me time if I want to go that way. Or I can restore to it my newest image, but I like the ideal of having that drive on the shelf, just in case all else fails.

External usb drives it seems can save your ass in more way than one in a pinch.

See if you can find a external usb dvd player and see if it works with your machine, you could have a bad player in your box. Are you using a laptop or desktop?

Laptop optical players (dvd) are fairly standardized and a after market player probably would fit in as a replacement, I have swapped out players in my past laptops and it was easy to do. Desktops are easy to do also.

Microsoft and the market in general are moving away from built in dvd/cd players all together most new machines do not even have the installed. (sucks !)

Hope this helps !

I have had dvd stop working and cd still reading. In the end I bought a new drive. I have seen a few failed drives. For a while I suspected it might be some kind of DRM disabling. But that doesn't make sense anyway without breaching material. It could be region lockout or just a failure. The dvd optics are separate to the cd optics AFAIK. Or perhaps the drive can't read dual layer disks. New drives should be pretty cheap and easy to install. Get a recognized brand.
