View Full Version : Anyone know about Gold Pandas?

Wife pulled a stash box and was looking through it. I took a peek and saw this gold trinket wrapped in plastic.. says .999 1 OZ Au 100 1988 and has a panda on it. The quality is strange though, looks like the stamp that made this was sanded or something. Also the edge is not perfect. I know nothing about these, don't know where I got it either. Just mixed in with random coins and paper. Charging my camera to take pics, don't really trust any coin shops around here but might have to go that route.

PS If I take a hard drive magnet to it, there is a very very small amount of magnetism.

all I know is the Chinese gold and silver pandas are the most counterfeit of coins... like them asian rolex watches and such.

I don't have any because of this.

I had a bunch of those. They had a different panda for the different years. They were really "cobby" and rough, and one even had a small mark on it that looked like rust. I did some research at the time and found that was common. I sold everything Chinese just as word was getting out about the counterfeit market. I didn't want to deal with any hassles. I do have two silver 1oz pandas I picked up when they first came out but that's it.

Agreed. Fake Pandas are pouring over to the US through ebay and other online stores. On ebay, they'll show a coin that is stamped "copy", and tell you you're getting a copy, but the one you get is not stamped.

Just FYI, they are worth more if they are double sealed as in plastic and then a capsule because it shows that they have not been graded before... provided it's real of course.

If you have silver pandas from when they came out then you are sitting on a small fortune. www.ebay.com/itm/1983-China-10yuan-27g-silver-panda-NGC-PF69-/271853883818

Mine was wrapped in saran wrap and taped. Just can't remember where I got it, I think I got the whole box after a relative died and didn't really pay any attention. Would this be the definition of a fools gold?

You should be able to hold the coin, feel the weight of it, and easily tell if it's a copied fake. Of course, it could be tungsten, but that would be a more elaborate fake not an ebay copy coin.

That magnetism is likely the only thing valuable about it.

Maybe but I read if gold is placed in a magnetized area it can become slightly magnetized. Does being stored in a big ass speaker box count?

I doubt it is counterfeit, this was procured before ebay.

More likely it is diamagnetic like silver is.

Many thanks for everyone, I will run it around the local coin scams and see what they say. if we get anything above 1K I will cash in, my car is pretty much dead and this would revive it.

Anything over $1k? Is it a one ounce coin? Shoot for closer to spot than just $1k!

The "We Buy Gold" places will probably only give 4-500. Other than send it to APMEX or similar I doubt getting anything close to spot. Just want to confirm it is real as the first step.

Sorry Cebu, that coin looks die cast to me. Look at the details of your coin, and compare to this one from Apmex:

http://www.apmex.com/product/15591/1988-china-1-oz-gold-panda-bu-sealed

http://www.images-apmex.com/images/Catalog%20Images/Products/15591_Slab.jpg?v=20131022032534&width=600&height=600

http://www.images-apmex.com/images/Catalog%20Images/Products/15591_Obv.jpg?v=20131022032534&width=600&height=600

Look at the panda's face, and look at the temple roof details, they don't match. I think you have a fake. Don't take my word for it though, take it to a coin or jewelery dealer and have them acid test that shit.

Why would a replica be that far under weight? You sure it isn't plated?

This is price per gram.

I get a price of 702.70 at this moment for 18.4 grams.

Pawnshop Me 'can you help me figure out what this is?" Them "We don't buy that"

Jewelers Me "can you help me figure out what this is" Them "Let me look at that, hmm.. let me give it to the jeweler" "jeweler can I file into it?"
me "sure" Jeweler looks at it a few more seconds and hands it to the lady, she hands it back to me "we don't know what it is" They didn't file into it.

Coin shop with tons of cool stuff ~ Me 'can you help me figure out what this is?" Them "sure will" hands it to the main person who analyzes it a bit and says "can i put a scratch in it?"
me "sure you can so we can figure out what it is"
them "I tested it with 22 karat and it's not 22 karat, I don't know what it is"
She then was babbling about jewelry a bit, hands it back and says we don't know what it is...
They didn't file or make any scratch.

That's as far as I got today.

It's obvious what it is, a Chinese fake. It's certainly not gold, if that's what you're wondering. I own a handful of Chinese fake gold coins, I have a pile of them in a jewelery box just in case someone breaks into our house to give them an easy target in hopes they'll take the fakes and get out.

none of them even weighed it, I don't understand these places. Almost the same thing when I wanted to see what my fathers diamond ring was worth. Gold places would give me scrap price (way below spot) plus they keep a free diamond. Jewelry places studied the diamond but wouldn't give me a price. Thinking of taking close ups and sell the diamond on ebay and selling the ring for scrap.

Last place I lived there would be no problems like this, they offered 2x as much for the ring. One place here that offered 1/4th the price I looked them in the face and told them that that's an embarrassment.

Today I didn't ask them to buy it, what it was worth or anything.

You don't have to weigh it. You could hand that coin to me and even I could tell it's underweight and fake.

To deal with these coin places, you have to know what you have is worth. Go in there, and they will know they are dealing with a person who has knowledge of precious metals.

Walk in with a Gold Eagle and say you want spot for it....you'll get spot for it.

I've sold and bought quite a few Gold Eagles, Krugs, etc. I've sold every Gold Eagle for spot price, Krugs for about 10-15$ below spot.

I have a local guy I trust and who treats me honestly. I think this may be rare though...your value may vary.

My opinion, a gold eagle is worth the spot price of gold, if you sell for less than that you are getting taken. My opinion.

I think it's ok for a dealer to have a buy/sell spread around the spot price. Even Apmex doesn't pay spot for gold eagles. Now, those folks offering to buy for 30-40% of spot, they are ripping people off.

Yes, that's OK. Dealers rip folks off by taking advantage of people who either don't know what they have, or don't have any knowledge.

Everyone who reads this forum has the knowledge.

Don't ever sell your gold for less then $10 or $15 dollars below spot! Iron rule. Don't, you are ripping yourself off. The only exception would be coins scratched and beat to shit so bad you and "they" both know that those coins would never sell.

A coin in good shape, spot or close to it. They will sell it on the spread. They know this, you should know this. If you both know this, it's a fair deal.
