Its what happens when you take the fundamentals out of teaching the young ones (three "R's") and base the education at and to the lowest common denominator. Making everyone match the baseline and repress the talented and interested in learning.

Many examples shown over the years showing that grade school education back in those days was equal to collage and above today, plus back when being lucky to be offered a education was considered a blessing when the majority could not even read, because feeding oneself and family was more important than knowing how to read.
