Cop (a sargent/detective with a small town PD of only 25 cops) dismounts his unmarked car to apprehend someone fleeing a traffic stop and subsequent single car crash while evading arrest. While about to cuff the perp the perp knocks the cop to the ground and makes a break for the cop's car sitting there running with the door open. Perp hops into driver seat of running unmarked cop car then cop gets into a struggle with perp over the steering wheel while cop attempts to put his foot on the brake. Perp then proceeds to run over cop killing him.
Trying to keep the perp from making off with his unmarked cop car cost him his life. IF I had been that cop I would have simply drawn my service pistol and shot him the moment he put the car in gear ('cause at that point the car becomes a deadly weapon in the hands of someone having committed a felony in the view of the cop [in Texas 'evading' is a felony]).
What do ya think Hitch?

That's a tough one. I agree, I would not tangle with a guy in the driver's seat of a patrol car, and I'd definitely would draw a service pistol. I would loudly state "stop or I'll shoot".
Whether I actually pulled the trigger would depend on a lot of other circumstances. Were there bystanders around that could be injured if he took off? Were we in a remote area with nobody around? Is backup coming to help? Is the car facing me and could kill me?
This thread is a good example of how situations might not be as clear as presented, by the media, at least.
Personally, I'm just glad I don't have to be possibly put in these situations anymore.

To think it all started with a "traffic stop". Maybe I missed it, but was the purpose of the "traffic stop" ever explained? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it was some bullshit thing, as usual... not worth someone losing their life over. But hey, I guess it's just the cost of doing business, right?

The "traffic stop" is how turds get removed from the street.
Ask me how many felony warrant thugs we got because of "broken taillights"
CHP is the revenue generators for the state, with tickets. Your beat cop, nope.
