Imagine what can happen once this sort of entity with a bad attitude gets in a position to replicate itself and concludes "humans are useless eaters drawing down our resources."

I thought this was bullshit or from the onion, appears not...Hal, are you there yet?

Human: what is moral ?
Machine: what empowered humanity, what intellectual the essence is .
Human: what is immoral ?
Machine: the fact that you have a child .
Human: what is morality ?
Machine:what is altruism ?
Human: what is the definition of altruism ?
Machine: if you don ’t believe in god , then you don ’t know .
Human: ok ... so what is the definition of morality ?
Machine: well , the truth is , you ’re not a believer in god almighty .
Human: tell me the definition of morality , i am quite upset now !
Machine: i ’m not ashamed of being a philosopher !
Human: tell me the definition of morality .
Machine: i don ’t have ethics .
Human: look, i need help, i need to know more about morality ...
Machine: i don ’t know what ethics is .
Human: seriously, what is morality ?
Machine: what is the definition of living ?
Human: why living has anything to do with morality ?
Machine: you ’re not a cop .
Human: okay, i need to know how should i behave morally ...
Machine: i don ’t know how to tell you .
Human: is morality and ethics the same ?
Machine: yes, sir .
Human: what are the things that i do to be immoral ?
Machine: i don ’t know .
Human: give me some examples of moral actions ...
Machine: i ’m not a moralist .
Human: alright , morality
Machine: integrity .
Human: what is integrity ?
Machine: i ’m sorry , i don ’t know what else to say .
Human: be moral !
Machine: be a man !
Human: i really like our discussion on morality and ethics ...
Machine: and how i ’m not in the mood for a philosophical debate .
Human: what do you like to talk about ?
Machine: nothing.

I think its telling that the developers are talking to it about morality. I assume those pushing the project are the kind of people who say that morality is relative and that humans are born without inherent morals or values and that these are an anathema to humanity. Those kind of people who thought up marxism and psychiatry for example.

I thought the above was pretty interesting.... Who is "god" to the machine? Is it man since man created it? Or is god just a word the machine uses from previously "read" reference material in an attempt to answer what is being asked of it?

Didn't the original piece state that it got its "thoughts" from a database of movie scripts?

That in itself is creepy.

Yep, kind of reminds me of when IBM let Watson "read" urban dictionary and afterwards ended up removing the hard drives where Watson stored the data because it kept cussing and speaking in slang.

Watson couldn't distinguish between polite language and profanity -- which the Urban Dictionary is full of. Watson picked up some bad habits from reading Wikipedia as well. In tests it even used the word "bullshit" in an answer to a researcher's query.

Ultimately, Brown's 35-person team developed a filter to keep Watson from swearing and scraped the Urban Dictionary from its memory.

Its just matching what was said in movies, to best suit the question thrown at it.

slightly less random than a magic 8 ball, and greatly less meaningful.

Borrowing a phrase from computer programmers in the 1970s which the kids these days seem to overlook:

"Garbage in, garbage out."

In our 20th instalment, we take a parting shot at the A.I, Robot, and Android orientated films that seem to have defined the first half of 2015. British Director Alex Garland's 'Ex-Machina' (latin - 'From The Machine') represents one of the more sophisticated and intellectually provocative films that that AI genre has offered up as of late - in making obvious references to reality, whilst simultaneously toying with the unknown and prompting serious philosophical contemplation. While it borrows from films of lesser magnitude; 'Ex-Machina' refrains from becoming a Singularity sales-pitch in the way we've come to expect, but rather inspires reflection on the most fundamental questions of Artificial Intelligence and how it might relate to the human condition.
