40,000 deaths a year due to junk food, says health watchdog Nice

30th June 2015

‘The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) says that unhealthy foods have wreaked a “terrible toll of ill health” on the nation and placed a “substantial” strain on the economy.

For the first time, the organisation publishes landmark guidance on how to prevent the “huge number of unnecessary deaths” from conditions such as heart disease that are linked to the consumption of ready meals and processed food.

It calls for sweeping changes to food production and government policy to encourage lifestyle changes, and to reduce significantly the amount of salt and saturated fat the nation consumes.’

More than 40,000 Britons are dying unnecessarily every year because of high levels of salt and fat in their diets, the Government’s public health watchdog Nice has warned.

world wide meme? Pretty low estimate IMO.

From our local paper yesterday:

Sugary drinks linked to high death toll

Sugary drinks are killing as many as 184,000 adults around the world each year, medical experts have estimated.
They say in 2010 an estimated 133,000 deaths were from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease and 6,450 from cancer.

"Many countries in the world have a significant number of deaths occurring from a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages," said the study's senior author Dr Dariush Mozaffarian.

"It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet."

The research, from Tufts University in Boston and published in the American Heart Association's Circulation journal, is the first detailed global report assessing deaths attributable to sugar-sweetened beverages.

They were defined as any sugar-sweetened fizzy drinks, fruit drinks, sports/energy drinks, sweetened iced teas or homemade sugary drinks.

Pure fruit juice was excluded.

Yeah whenever I get into discussions on food with people who I just get to know the first thing I tell them is to cut out the sugar.

The smartest thing to do is to cut the sugar and replace it with saturated animal fat.

Basically you're better off eating a butter bar over a chocolate bar.

I don't know the exact numbers, but I know it's expanding slowly. Prices are coming down and people are becoming more educated on the matter.

The organic section at the grocery store I like to shop at has expanded 50% in size in just the past two years. Demand is up, so things are moving in a positive direction.

Nope, never said anything of the sought. You're the one who's been caught lying...

Whats that?

Yes, it does seem odd that despite your "boy who cried wolf" ramblings life expectancy has risen dramatically for the past ONEHUNDRED YEARS

People can eat whatever they want.

Thats a statement advocating liberty, it couldn't be anymore direct. Thats the thing about freedom and liberty unfortunately, if people want to kill themselves or eat junk food thats their prerogative. You can't have liberty without it, otherwise its socialism and state control.

Did the continents divide before or after Noah's flood?

The Bible seems to indicate that for a period of time after the flood of Noah the earth's continents were all connected. They became disconnected, however, during the days of Peleg. Genesis 10:25 states the following

"To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided . . ."

Peleg was born 101 years after the flood ended. Some believe that the division caused during the days of Peleg refers to the division of earth via plate tectonics or that put simply that the continents separated. This supposition is incorrect. If massive plate movements during the time of Babel or Peleg had divided the earth it would have caused catastrophic rearrangements of the earth. This would have been recorded in various historical accounts. The fact that this division is of a less catastrophic nature weighs against plate tectonics being the cause of this division.

The connection of the continents allowed animals to move into areas that were later separated by water. For example, animals and people moved into Australia, Micronesia, Polynesia and also other places such as North and South America via the land bridge that once connected present day Russia and Alaska.

Genesis 10:25 reveals that the earth and its land masses were divided by rising sea levels. The name of Peleg is derived from the word pelagic. This word means 'watercourse' in the Hebrew and 'division' in the Aramaic. It also means relating to, or living or occurring in the open sea, oceanic. This word is often used as a descriptive term. We often speak of pelagic birds, which means marine or ocean birds. The word Peleg, in its basic use, means division by water, as in Job 38:25 where it states "Who has divided (peleg) a channel for the overflowing water . . ."

Should we believe the lifespans of man before the flood? (http://www.biblestudy.org/maps/life-span-of-patriarchs-from-adam-to-noah.html)
Why did God cause Noah's flood? (http://www.biblestudy.org/basicart/why-did-man-live-longer-before-flood-of-noah-than-after-it.html)
How long did it take to build the ark? (http://www.biblestudy.org/question/how-long-did-it-take-noah-to-build-ark.html)
Picture of what the ark looked like (http://www.biblestudy.org/biblepic/how-big-was-the-ark-of-noah-scale-model.html)
Was Noah's Ark big enough? (http://www.biblestudy.org/biblepic/picture-of-feeding-animals-on-noah-ark.html)

The Genesis flood caused the ice age. This would lock up massive amounts of water in polar ice. As the earth warmed up and the polar ice melted it would have caused a corresponding rise in the level of the earth's oceans. As the ocean levels rose the rising waters would have separated various landmasses. This would have included the separation of Western Asia (Russia) from Alaska via the Bering land bridge. Other areas separated would have included Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Asia. If the waters had raised slightly more the Isthmus of Panama would be underwater today, which would have separated North and South America.

Shortly after the flood the earth began to thermally stabilize and the polar ice began to melt. This was one of the reasons that God was adamant that human migrations take place quickly (Genesis 9:1,11:1 - 9). As the ice began to melt, routes that were easy to traverse (for animals and humans) would have been inundated by rising water. This is one of the reasons that God confounded the languages at the tower of Babel. The new languages caused the people to migrate immediately before many of the migration routes, especially between continents, would be sealed off by rising water. The change in the earth's climate, however, meant lifespans significantly decreased after Noah's flood.

Fizzy drinks lethal toll: Scientists warn they kill 184,000 a year through diabetes, heart disease and cancer

Study looked at sodas, fruit drinks, sports and energy drinks
Found they have no benefits but contribute to thousands of deaths
Urged world governments to eliminate such drinks from diets

Sugary drinks kill as many as 184,000 adults each year, scientists claim.
Fizzy soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweetened iced teas are causing thousands of deaths and have no health benefits, they said.
And they warned that governments across the world should make it a priority to eliminate such drinks from people’s diets.
Researchers said sugary drinks were implicated in 133,000 diabetes deaths worldwide in one year. Another 45,000 died from cardiovascular disease and 6,450 from cancer. All three diseases have been linked to high sugar consumption.

Potentially lethal: Researchers claim sugary drinks kill as many as 184,000 adults each year (stock image)

In the UK 1,316 people are said to have died as a result of drinking sweetened drinks. Mexico topped the list, with 30 per cent of adult deaths under 45 attributed to sugary drink consumption, while Japan was lowest with 1 per cent.
Kawther Hashem, a nutritionist from the campaign group Action on Sugar, said: ‘More evidence is showing the alarming impact of sugary drinks on our health, the healthcare service and the economy. It is time these huge profit-making drinks companies took to reformulating their products with less sugar.’

The study looked at sodas, fruit drinks, sports or energy drinks, sweetened iced teas and homemade sugary drinks that contained at least 50 calories per 240ml. A can of Coca-Cola contains 101 calories per 240ml or 139 overall.
Dariush Mozaffarian, from Tufts University, Boston, and a senior author of the study, said the focus should be on cutting the drinks out of diets in order to save lives.
‘It should be a global priority to substantially reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet,’ he said.
‘Some population dietary changes, such as increasing fruits and vegetables, can be challenging due to agriculture, costs, storage, and other complexities. This is not complicated.
‘There are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption is saving tens of thousands of deaths each year.’

Leprino Foods, the world’s largest Italian cheese manufacturer, is the nearly exclusive supplier of Pizza Cheese to the 6000+ Pizza Hut restaurants in the U.S. To control costs (and boost profits), Leprino Foods uses patented manufacturing processes that add large volumes of water, salt and GMO food starch to so-called granules of Pizza Cheese prior to flash-freezing.
Pizza Hut cheese is not just cheese, it’s silicone plastic, which binds to form lasting fat. The antifoaming chemical, Polymethylsiloxane, used in Pizza Hut’s cheese has no FDA approval for use as a food ingredient. The chemical is primarily used in food-manufacturing factories as a de-foaming agent for commercial boilers. Silicone products can caulk seams around the bathtub to seal out water, but it’s not meant as food.
Our children are eating silicone in school cafeteria meals too. Silicone is not an approved substance for human consumption. Get off the ‘Frankenfood’, do a real detox, eat a healthy diet of real vegetables, grains, and fatty acids. The longest living people don’t come from fast food America, rather from Japanese cultures. That's a BS study though.

They are saying fat/salt is bad when fast food is almost entirely sugar. It's the fat vs. sugar thing again.

I cooked for the super rich, they all eat fatty/salty foods. That's the way to go. There's a reason why they love Classical French cuisine the most. It's basically butter, cream, and red meat.

Yep, the super rich eat completely different food to the serfs.

Fat is an awesome food, has been for millions of years for us humans. The thing to avoid is hydrogenated fat and sugar. Sugar is poison as is a high carb diet which is basically the same thing. That said, people can eat whatever they like, I won't be stopping them anytime soon!

If they want to kill themselves by eating crap, then I don't have a problem with it. You can't save the world and these days I'm highly suspicious of anyone attempting to do so, unless of course they have big cahoones and are fighting the tribe. Everything else is just pointless distractions and misdirection, like most of this thread.

Yes $500 for 1 oz of fish eggs. It's super healthy though, believe me.

Served with Buckwheat Blinis with Crème Fraîche, Minced Shallots, Minced Chives, Fried Capers, and Egg Dice served on a large tea leaf and rose petals.
