For anyone considering buying a Swindle, uh, I mean Kindle, you do not purchase the books...you "license" them, of course:

Use of Kindle Content. Upon your download of Kindle Content and payment of any applicable fees (including applicable taxes), the Content Provider grants you a non-exclusive right to view, use, and display such Kindle Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Kindle or a Reading Application or as otherwise permitted as part of the Service, solely on the number of Kindles or Supported Devices specified in the Kindle Store, and solely for your personal, non-commercial use. Kindle Content is licensed, not sold, to you by the Content Provider. The Content Provider may include additional terms for use within its Kindle Content. Those terms will also apply, but this Agreement will govern in the event of a conflict. Some Kindle Content, such as Periodicals, may not be available to you through Reading Applications.

(...)

Termination. Your rights under this Agreement will automatically terminate if you fail to comply with any term of this Agreement. In case of such termination, you must cease all use of the Kindle Store and the Kindle Content, and Amazon may immediately revoke your access to the Kindle Store and the Kindle Content without refund of any fees. Amazon’s failure to insist upon or enforce your strict compliance with this Agreement will not constitute a waiver of any of its rights.

You are probably flagged as a "potential intellectual property violator."

Been a bunch of uproar about what amazon has done in the past and present that the people at this forum still have discussions on the subject and how to do anything and everything related to E-Books and all devices that can read them. This is a very good bunch of people from all over the world and the best forum on the net about everything and anything E-Books.

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/index.php

That is why a large number of kindle owners or other e-reader devices ether dedicated or using the kindle reader app backup all their books on their computers and do not trust or rely on amazon to keep their books safe. Both the books bought from amazon or other sources use a program called "Calibre", http://calibre-ebook.com/

Along with a plug in authored by a guy called "Apprentice Alf" https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/

To strip the DRM and any links or traces of amazon water marks from amazon books and then archive them on our computers or on dvd's so we will never lose them, and also then allows kindle book format to be changed into any other reader format or the other way around.

Been doing this for over 5 years now and so far never have had a problem with amazon. And it allows me to share my books with others and also have the peace of mind that as long as I own a computer my library is safe.

Granted for users that are paranoid about their identity and limited personal info that is required to use their devices or content need not bother messing with amazon at all, because they do track what you buy and then use every way they can to entice you to buy more stuff from them. Just like most other sellers that depend on sales to stay in business.

then archive them on...dvd's so we will never lose them,

CDs and DVDs are very poor choices for long term storage as then are known to physically degrade over the course of just a few years.

Understand, also store the books on a couple of external drives. CDs and DVD that I have burnt so far so good as far as holding up storage conditions are important for long lifetimes, I expect my libabary will out live me, and when it does what the hay :)
