Corruption: The latest batch of IRS documents to be publicly released shows a government conspiring to criminalize political opposition. Did we learn about this from an inquisitive news outlet? Unfortunately, no.

Thanks to a band of lawyers called Judicial Watch, and no thanks at all to the mainstream press, we are learning about a shady October 2010 meeting between former IRS official Lois Lerner, Justice Department officials and the FBI. It was at this gathering of minds, says Judicial Watch, that the parties planned "for the possible criminal prosecution of targeted nonprofit organizations for alleged illegal political activity."

Records unearthed by Judicial Watch also document the IRS transferring confidential tax returns from 113,000 nonprofit social welfare groups to the FBI "as part of its prosecution effort."

They also show "the Obama DOJ wanted IRS employees who were going to testify to Congress to turn over documents to the DOJ before giving them to Congress."

This scandal has come quite a way since it was first confirmed nearly 800 days ago that IRS was targeting for added scrutiny conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. Harassing conservative and Tea Party organizations and holding up their paperwork are one level of misconduct.

But planning to send people to prison because they have different political views seems criminal itself.

It's unlikely anyone in this government will be convicted and sentenced for meeting to talk about charging interest groups with crimes. But there remains the fact that while Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chaired the House Oversight Committee, he sent a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen telling him that Lerner might have violated federal tax law when she transmitted those tax returns to the Justice Department.

At the very least, we should see a proper investigation into this charge.

Meanwhile, as Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton says, these new documents "show that the Obama IRS scandal is also an Obama DOJ and FBI scandal."

From what Fitton has seen, he believes "the FBI and Justice Department worked with Lois Lerner and the IRS to concoct some reason to put President Obama's opponents" in prison before his re-election.

What would we do without Judicial Watch and its Freedom of Information Act lawsuits?

Clearly, the media haven't been terribly curious about the scandal. But that's no surprise, since Obama has been their darling since early 2008 and they will do whatever is necessary to protect him, including looking the other way at scandals that might hurt him.

Though the Republicans appear curious, we really haven't seen much from them despite their control of the House since 2011 and the Senate since January. Had the party roles been reversed, the Democrats would have turned Washington upside down long ago.

We don't truly expect anyone to spend time in a federal pen over any part of this growing scandal. Politics will override justice. But wouldn't it be nice if official Washington did its job for a change and at least made some people uncomfortable?

Bloomberg: IRS Plans a 50% Ramp-Up in Audits of Small Businesses Next Year (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-11-17/irs-plans-a-50-ramp-up-in-audits-of-small-businesses-next-year)

November 17, 2020
The Internal Revenue Service is planning to ramp up audits of smaller businesses and their investors by about 50% next year, following years of persistently low examination rates, an agency official said Tuesday.

The result could be a surge in audits of companies ranging from mom-and-pop retail stores and technology startups to investment funds that have historically faced only infrequent checks thanks to the time and effort required at the IRS.

“The IRS is focusing our efforts to increase compliance activity in this area of not only partnerships, but also investor returns related to pass-throughs,” De Lon Harris, the IRS deputy commissioner of examination for small businesses, said at an American Institute of Certified Public Accountants event. For 2021 “we are planning for 50% more than we had in the previous year.”

So what we see here is the knock-out punch. After a volley of profit killing legislation that included extreme taxes under Obama, vicious fines for not buying unaffordable health insurance and loads of other unaffordable insurances such as liability and auto; then came the maiming stun-punch of the Scamdemic shutdowns and finally the killing blow by the IRS who will find many clever ways to fine the middle class out of existence.

Fox: Biden gives DOJ green light to resume Obama-era 'slush fund' payouts to liberal groups (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-doj-obama-era-slush-fund-payouts-liberal-groups)
President-elect Joe Biden is calling for the Justice Department to look into reinstating a controversial Obama-era practice that allowed prosecutors to make settlement agreements that resulted in defendants paying outside groups instead of victims or the government.

The Trump administration had put an end to these payments following a 2017 memo from then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions which was reflected in the Justice Department's manual...

"When the federal government settles a case against a corporate wrongdoer, any settlement funds should go first to the victims and then to the American people — not to bankroll third-party special interest groups or the political friends of whoever is in power," Sessions said in 2017.

A Republican-backed bill known as the "Stop Settlement Slush Funds Act of 2017" would have made the practice illegal...

Goodlatte's bill never became law, but the Sessions-era DOJ policy did become an official agency rule that officially went into effect in December 2020. The rule allows for limited exceptions for "an otherwise lawful payment or loan that provides restitution or compensation to a victim," situations where "a trusted third party" is needed to deliver funds due to concerns over foreign corruption, payments for legal or other professional services related to the case, and payments that are otherwise "expressly authorized" by a statute or regulation.

The rule is now part of a list of federal agency actions to be reviewed pursuant to Biden's upcoming executive order titled, "Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis."
