You can now see how easy it is for people like those at NASA make all those DECEPTIVE "outer space" pictures and computer animations better when you see how EASY anyone can do something simple in comparison like this

Photoshop is an extremely powerful tool if you know how to use it. My skill levels with photoshop are probably between a 3-4 on a scale of 10. I use it professionally, but I usually only use a few tools and I wouldn't be able to do what the guy in the OP video did.

I do stuff like that for a living, though the stuff I do is even harder. I've restored old photos before too, but I mainly did that as a side thing when I was a teenager.

Like I've taken pictures of a leather couch and made the membranes of bat-like wings for example. I would smear in wrinkles by taking a photo of a human foot sole and blend that in too. A lot of textures are actually just heavily modified photos of unrelated things that have similar shapes/textures that are blended in and layered together.

The photo in the video needs some drawn in lighting/shading, but whatever. It wouldn't be hard to make quick Normal + Specular maps in CrazyBump.

Watch how powerful it is and you can make a 2D image suddenly 3D.

can you make Obama white?

Yes.

Cut out the skin into layers. Set a few of them to screen. Add a Pinkish-Red Normal set to an arbitrary percentage I'd have to play around with an there you go. Someone already did it so I'm not gonna take half a day to do that.

I wonder if that CrazyBump software was used with Serpo's avatar. You could probably make money improving advertising photos. Turn this:

There are some extremely talented restorers and colorizers on this subreddit. Very impressive work, IMO.

A lot of people can do it, the question is how much time do you have to do how many details. If you had months just for one photo you could make it look like it was shot today with an HD camera. You could also do it in hours, but it would just look like someone did watercolor over Black and White.

A very important video to view...and understand.

Today, what you think you "see" may not be reality.

Countless problems with the "Moon Landings" beyond that laugh.

A more mundane but ubiquitous example of "what you see is not necessarily reality":
