Buckingham Palace was last night braced for new embarrassment as turmoil continued over leaked footage showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute as a child.
An explosive Channel 4 documentary is set to reveal details of how Prince Philip's sister met and admired Adolf Hitler, whom she described as a 'charming and seemingly modest man'.
Three of his sisters were married to senior Nazi officers – one a colonel in the SS – and when Philip attended a family funeral in Germany in 1937 he was confronted by crowds giving the Heil Hitler salute. The documentary includes previously unseen extracts from a private memoir in which one sister talks of her early admiration for Hitler.
Meanwhile the footage showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute as a child could have been accidentally leaked by Buckingham Palace, it has been reported.

Controversial: Buckingham Palace is braced for new embarrassment as turmoil continued over footage showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute as a child (pictured), which may have been inadvertently leaked
The Duke of Edinburgh, now 94, served bravely in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and his family's history is no secret. But the Palace will not welcome a fresh focus on his sister's links to the Third Reich while controversy continues over the footage of the Queen.

WAS FILM ACCIDENTALLY LEAKED? Footage showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute as a child could have been accidentally leaked by Buckingham Palace, it has been reported.
The edited clip showing Princess Elizabeth and her sister Margaret seconds after the incident was reportedly used in an exhibition at the Palace last year.
It may have been inadvertently released to a documentary maker after a flurry of requests for the unseen royal home movies, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Buckingham Palace is considering taking legal action over the footage.
The Palace has launched an inquiry into how the 17-second black and white film came into the hands of The Sun newspaper.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: 'There is an inquiry going on to find the source of the footage and until that inquiry is completed we would not give out any further information.'
The grainy film was shot in 1933, months after Hitler came to power and six years before the start of the Second World War. It shows the then seven-year-old Princess Elizabeth playing with a dog on the lawn at Balmoral with her sister Margaret, before raising her arm in a Nazi salute.
Her mother, the future Queen Mother, and her uncle Edward – later Edward VIII – are also shown in the pose. Her uncle appears to be showing them how to perform the Nazi salute, which even then was recognised internationally as a sign of obedience to Hitler.
Royal aides are investigating how the 17-second black and white film clip came to be published by The Sun, and Buckingham Palace has not ruled out legal action.
The footage was sold to a tabloid newspaper for a four-figure sum, the Mail has learnt.
It is understood that the 17-second cine film clip was copied by a researcher with ‘access to the royal archives’ several years ago.
The anonymous individual chose not to make it public, however, until a few weeks ago, when they approached The Sun.
It is unclear as to whether the seller obtained it from the British Film Institute, where much of the Royal Family’s historical home cine footage is kept, or from the royal archives at Windsor Castle.
It emerged last night that the edited clip was allegedly used in an exhibition at the Palace last year.

Back to work: Her Majesty looked content as she drove her green Jaguar X Type down the Long Walk from Windsor Castle earlier yesterday amid a furore over leaked footage of her as a child
Meanwhile the Channel 4 documentary is set to reveal how animosity to the Queen's marriage to Philip was fuelled by fears about his family's links to Nazi Germany. In the previously unpublished memoir, his older sister Sophie – a godmother to Prince Edward – wrote of entertaining both Hitler and his henchman Hermann Goering before they rose to power.
She said she and her husband were 'impressed' by Hitler and his plans for Germany's future, although she wrote they had 'fundamentally' changed their view some years later. Sophie joined the Nazi Women's Auxiliary and was photographed at Goering's wedding, on the top table with Hitler, and her husband Prince Christoph von Hessen was head of the SS in the Air Ministry.
The couple named one of their sons Karl Adolf in Hitler's honour after meeting the Nazi leader in 1931 or 1932, before he became the German Chancellor.
Philip's sister said Goering had been 'very enthusiastic' about the Nazi party and its leader, and had urged her and her husband to meet Hitler in person. She noted in her memoir, written in old age: 'As Germany was going through hard times and there was a lot of poverty and general dissatisfaction everywhere, we were interested to hear about the great improvements his party was planning to do.
'As Goering was insistent we should meet Hitler personally, we decided to ask him to lunch at our flat… I have to say here, that, although Chri and I changed our political view fundamentally some years later, we were impressed by this charming and seemingly modest man, and by his plans to change and improve the situation in Germany.'

The image of Queen Elizabeth as an 18-year-old (pictured) in wartime ambulance service uniform is more reflective of her reputation than that of her giving a Nazi salute as a child, some have claimed
Sophie's memoir was never published and the Channel 4 documentary Prince Philip: The Plot To Make A King – due to be aired on July 30 – is the first time it has been made public by her family.
Three of Philip's four sisters married German officers and when he travelled to a family funeral in Darmstadt in 1937 he was photographed walking through ranks of troops and crowds giving the Nazi salute. His sisters were excluded from receiving invitations to his wedding to the future Queen in 1947 because of their links to Nazi Germany.
But Sophie, whose husband Prince Christoph was killed in 1943 and who remarried to Prince George William of Hanover, was made a godmother to Prince Edward in 1964 and was a frequent visitor to the Royal Family.
Last night Buckingham Palace officials said they 'were not aware' of the Channel 4 documentary and 'have nothing to say'.
There can be no suggestion, however, that the Queen, Prince Philip or the Queen Mother were in any way Nazi sympathisers. Philip served Britain with distinction during the Second World War, while his future wife and mother-in-law became inspirational figures of wartime defiance.
Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Greece, was awarded the title of Righteous among the Nations for her part in sheltering Greek Jews from the Gestapo.
Regarding the Balmoral footage, historians have stressed that Hitler was a much derided figure in Britain in the early 1930s, and that the film appears to show the Queen Mother making fun of the Nazi salute.
Princess Elizabeth would have been too young to understand the gesture. But her uncle Edward, who abdicated to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson, faced numerous accusations of being a Nazi sympathiser.
The couple, by then the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, were photographed meeting Hitler in Munich in 1937, when Edward was said to have given a Nazi salute, although he later claimed it was a 'soldier's salute'.
Buckingham Palace has said it was 'disappointing that the film, shot eight decades ago and apparently from Her Majesty's personal family archive, has been obtained and exploited in this manner'.
It is understood its investigation will consider how the film fell into the hands of The Sun and will call in police if there is any suspicion of criminal activity.
Aides will have to consider if the footage could have been copied or stolen, or whether it could have been inadvertently handed to film-makers for a documentary.
[h=3]HOW THE 'FUHRER TURNED ON CHARM OVER MEAL AT OUR FLAT' Prince Philip's older sister Sophie met Adolf Hitler and his henchman Hermann Goering after she married a German aristocrat.
In a previously unpublished memoir, written in her old age, she described how family friend Goering came for tea at her flat near Frankfurt before the Nazis rose to power.
She wrote: 'He talked a lot about the new political party which he had joined, the 'Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei'.
'He was very enthusiastic about it all, especially about the party leader, a man called Adolf Hitler.
'As Germany was going through hard times and there was a lot of poverty and general dissatisfaction everywhere, we were interested to hear about the great improvements his party was planning to do.'

Prince Philip's older sister Sophie met Adolf Hitler and his henchman Hermann Goering (right) after she married a German aristocrat
Princess Sophie later met the Nazi leader at her home.
'As Goering was insistent we should meet Hitler personally, we decided to ask him to lunch at our flat,' she wrote.
'I had been warned he was a vegetarian, and found it difficult to plan an appropriate meal. In those days we had a cook-housekeeper, which was just as well, as my ideas about cooking and housekeeping were fairly hazy (being only eighteen at the time).
'We settled for an assortment of vegetables which turned out to be a great success.
'I have to say here, that, although Chri [her husband Prince Christoph von Hessen] and I changed our political view fundamentally some years later, we were impressed by this charming and seemingly modest man, and by his plans to change and improve the situation in Germany.
'This explains why Chri joined the SS in 1932, as his new friends had urged him to do.
'In 1935 he was appointed head of the 'Forschungsamt' [research bureau] of the Air Ministry.
'Its employees were pledged to secrecy and Chri never spoke about his work.'
The couple married in 1930 when Sophie was 16. Her meetings with Goering and Hitler appear to have taken place in 1931 or 1932.
Prince Christoph was killed in a plane crash in 1943 and his wife died in 2001.
Excerpts from her private memoir were read by the couple's son – Prince Rainer von Hessen – as part of the Channel 4 Secret History documentary Prince Philip: The Plot To Make A King. The programme is due to be shown at 9pm on July 30.
A senior royal source stressed that they had not yet embarked on legal action but made clear that the Palace was considering 'all avenues', including whether there has been a breach of the Royal Family's copyright.
The Sun has refused to reveal how it got the film but insists the 'original film remains under lock and key'. It said that 'several copies of the clip were made several years ago' and that one of them was obtained by the newspaper. Managing editor Stig Abell said it was obtained 'in a legitimate fashion'.
The publication has led to calls for greater access to the royal archives to help historians to document the Royal Family's wartime role. Culture Secretary John Whittingdale said he understood why the Palace was upset. But asked if the newspaper was right to publish, he told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show: 'That is a matter for The Sun. It is an editorial judgment. It is up to the Press to decide what is and what is not appropriate to print.'
The Board of Deputies of British Jews said it would be wrong to criticise the Queen over the film. President Jonathan Arkush said: 'It's really important for us not to judge this, even with hindsight. Obviously the Nazi salute now carries horrible memories and bitterness for us, but I do not think for one moment that it would be appropriate for me to suggest that the full horror of Nazi Germany was known at that point.'
Mark Almond, professor of modern history at Oxford University, said: 'Opening up aspects of the Queen's early years is not going to damage respect for the monarchy. It can only reinforce her standing with the public.'
Philip at a Nazi funeral and the day his sister had lunch with Hitler: TV documentary reopens painful chapter of duke's family past
By HARRY MOUNT FOR THE DAILY MAIL
Wearing a long, dark overcoat and a sombre expression, a handsome blond man marches through the streets of Germany.
The remarkable photograph from 1937 shows Prince Philip, then just 16, in a funeral procession for his older sister Cecile, who was killed in an air crash.
The young prince is flanked by grieving relatives, all wearing distinctive Nazi uniforms. One is clad in the uniform of the Brownshirts; another wears full SS regalia. The street in Darmstadt, near Frankfurt, is lined with crowds – many giving the 'Heil Hitler' salute.

Sombre: Philip, circled, is pictured as a 16-year-old with relatives wearing Nazi uniforms at his sister Cecile's funeral in Germany in 1937
In another extraordinary photograph Prince Philip's youngest sister Sophie – elegantly dressed with a fur hanging on the back of her chair – is seen sitting opposite Hitler at the wedding of Luftwaffe commander Hermann Goering and his bride Emmy.
The pictures, featured in next week's Channel 4 documentary Prince Philip: The Plot To Make A King, have been published before – and of course do not reflect on the duke, who can hardly be reproached for mourning one sister or for the company kept by another.
But the images lay bare the unfortunate family connections brought into focus by the programme.
Sophie was not the only sibling with Nazi links. Three of Philip's four sisters – Margarita, Cecile and Sophie – married German aristocrats who became leading figures in the Nazi party.
The documentary features an interview with Prince Rainer von Hessen, the son of Sophie and Prince Christoph. In it, he reveals the contents of his mother's memoir for the first time.

Celebration: Philip's sister Sophie, right, opposite Hitler at the 1935 wedding of Goering (with gold braid) in scene featured in Channel 4 documentary
Princess Sophie writes of a private lunch with Hitler and how she thought he was a 'charming and seemingly modest man'. She married Prince Christoph von Hessen, a director in the Third Reich Air Ministry, an SS colonel and the chief of Goering's secret intelligence service – responsible for spying on anti-Nazis.
The couple were such devoted Nazis that they named their first son Karl Adolf in honour of Hitler.
Prince Philip's oldest sister, Princess Margarita, married Gottfried, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. During the war, Prince Gottfried fought for the Germans on the Russian front, where he was badly wounded. But he turned against the Fuhrer, and was among the aristocratic officers implicated in the plot to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944 – which led to Prince Gottfried's dismissal from the army.
Philip broke a 60-year public silence about his family's Nazi ties in 2006. In an interview for a book titled Royals and the Reich, he said that – like many Germans – they found Hitler's early attempts to restore Germany's power and prestige 'attractive'.
'There was a great improvement in things like trains running on time and building,' he explained.
'There was a sense of hope after the depressing chaos of the Weimar Republic. I can understand people latching on to something or somebody who appeared to be appealing to their patriotism and trying to get things going. You can understand how attractive it was.'
The duke stressed that he was never 'conscious of anybody in the family actually expressing anti-Semitic views'.
But he added that there were 'inhibitions about the Jews' and 'jealousy of their success'. Unsurprisingly, none of Prince Philip's sisters were invited to the Queen's wedding in 1947. The German connection was still too shaming, only two years after the end of the war.
Philip's opposition to the Nazis has never been in doubt.
He fought valiantly for Britain during the war, seeing action in the Battle of Crete, the Battle of Cape Matapan in Greece and the Allied invasion of Sicily. But, as the documentary shows, there were questions and disquiet at court about the prince's German blood.
The Queen Mother apparently referred to Prince Philip as 'the Hun'. And, although he was born a prince of the Greek royal family, his mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, daughter of a German prince. Prince Philip's father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, is descended from the German ducal house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg – Philip's real surname.
But, on his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, he assumed his mother's maternal surname – Mountbatten, which is an Anglicised version of the German 'Battenberg'.
The Queen's real surname is also is German – Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. That was the surname of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, who was born near Coburg in Germany.
The Royal Family's surname was changed to Windsor in 1917, during the First World War, when Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was considered too German a name – not least because the planes coming over to bomb Britain were called Gotha bombers.
