I run XP, updates and security has been long gone. So in essence they offer a fix? Stay away like it's the plague.

There were a ton of patches released last week. Lucky me I get to be the guy that patches all of our Windows systems this month =/

Be happy that Windows 10 will solve all of the world's computer technical problems in just 8 days. :D

According to the article the threat isn't active or even proven, but they want to panic you to install this security update. RIGHT NOW.

Sounds like a better idea to hold off a bit.

i'm trying to escape the Windows universe.

i'm confined by the inability of my Linux system to read a large hairball of files off an external disk drive.

i liked the way XP networked. i guess what i want to escape from is Windows 7.

i'm also looking at the Xeon mini-ITX server/ workstation board from Supermicro.

nice low power consumption.

i just switched to LED lights because the price finally came down - Home Depot has 2 8.5 watt LED bulbs for $5.

now my computer is the energy hog.

I just bought an ASUS X550z laptop with Windows 8.1 installed. I configured it to dual boot Debian 8.1.0 (Jessie) linux.

That was a bit of a challenge with the UEFI bios. Also I wasn't able to get the Debian installer to connect to the cable modem. Ultimately I used the network share from my iphone to do the install. It went smooth, the system is up and running. I rsync'ed my data files to it last night. As for windows 10, I'll wait, it may destroy my boot loader.

What really pisses me off is all these supposed "open source" pc hardware manufacturers following lock and step MSoft by dumping driver support fro any older models.

If anyone wanted to start a new OS that's where they should start by port older hardware around the "digitally signed" bologna.

Probably too late for even the chinese, what a bunch of lemmings.

Thats nothing new for Micro$oft, they hijacked Lotus 123 ages ago. Debian linux is not digitally signed. You have to find your way into the bios to disable Micro$oft boot loader.

Honestly I'm in too deep, with work and communication, Half my energy computing these days is spent ensuring that my underwear size and what i ate for dinner last night isn't broadcast via satellite.

If you have the ability to prevent that you have done well!

If my Win7 machine blew up today I would buy this and install Mint Linux:

I hope my existing Shuttle pc lasts another 5 years...lol.

i love Shuttle's - the "breadbox" size !

one of my back-burner back-burner projects is to stick a mini-ITX board
in one of my 2 Shuttles, or in another mini (the "G-box"), all from about 10 years ago.
