View Full Version : Love my LCS

Picked these up yesterday, poured Englehard (they have a trove of them) and a couple GAE's. Gold - Spot + 5% and Silver $1.50 over spot.

They never hold back on price dips, and premiums stay the same. 80+ years in business, they must be doing something right.

* don't know how to show photos in post.

Do they still make englehard bars like that?

No, they haven't made them since the 80's I believe. It's nice to see that they didn't melt them down during the various run-ups. It's cool to hold a bar that probably retailed for ~$400-$500 when it was originally poured. And I'm sure they were more of an industrial production back then as opposed to a collectors item.

Side note: they have a huge tub of sterling silver there too.... some really neat old pieces that they sell, at..... or near spot. Not my thing, but interesting just the same.

That paticular bar was produced between 1979 and 2000.

Same price as my LCS. They had don't increase premiums for fractionals either. I got a .5 ozt poured Ag bar last week for around $8. Premiums on 90% however, those are going through the roof. I paid close to $18/ozt for some junk quarters.

Had two of those same Englehart bars. The first one's apmex sold me were so obviously modified I sent them back. They sent me new ones still in the factory packaging, no questions asked. Looked just like that. Was sorry to have to give them up.

I have 2 others in the original packaging as well.... has the American flag on the plastic.

One other thing I found interesting is that both of the GAE's are 2015's With gold in a year long decline, whoever bought those and bailed on them, clearly lost money. the LCS doesn't buy them for resale.... at 5% over spot they couldn't afford to.

I also got a 100 ouncer from apmex (several years ago) that didn't look like the other engelhards. I kept it though.

10 oz bars are as big as I'll go, but I did get to fondle an 100 oz Englehard bar at my LCS a few years back. I could be very tempted to buy one. That's a nice big beautiful chunk of metal. I do have a 10 oz Englehard bar, poured, and it's my favorite. The loaf style.

I love my LCS when they have what I want especially '70's silver art bars and ATB pucks. Lately, they did not have much (if any coming in) given the artificial low spot prices. A vast majority of my purchases have been at LCS's and coin shows.

Probably Franklin Mint silver art bars from the '70's. Those are usually either 500 grain or 1000-grain sterling bars based on what I have seen at various LCS and coin shows. The last time that I bought a sterling silver art bar, I paid below melt for it which is good to pay below melt until I realized that it was sterling silver which is the "ugly duckling" of silver.

Sterling Silver YUCK! Then I understand why you didn't want to trade my Franklin Mint car bars years ago. I thought it was because of me... ;D

Yep the mystery is solved. It was not because of you. Honestly speaking, out of all of the '70's silver art bars that I have in my collection, I have only 2 Franklin Mint sterling silver art bars. I prefer .999 over sterling. Unfortunately, the few old silver art bars that I see at the various LCS are the sterling silver art bars. .999 '70's silver art bars are much harder to come by. A dropping spot silver price makes that situation worse.

'Tis rich! Complaining about the dropping in Silver spot price, while being the megastar and prime suspect of silver price manipulation, while stating that Blythe hates silver art bars...
I'm on to you Miss Masters...

Who did you say visited you? K-os? Why did she disappear?

Thank you for your wonderful sense of humor Neuro but I feel that I have to state a few things:

1.) I am not complaining about falling silver prices because I expect spot silver to continue to fall (to a low of $8 on or before March 2017). So really the bear market in silver does not bother me. I welcome the continuing drop in the price since it I can get '70's silver art bars for a lower price at the LCS (if they have them).

2.) I am a collector first and foremost. I am not an investor and I am not a doomer stacker. I do not know how to manipulate anything since I do not have any power to do so. I think that TPTB are manipulating gold and silver. I do not know how to trade paper silver and I do not know very much about TA.

3.) As for K-os, I was not aware that she "disappeared". Until recently (starting in July 2015), I have not posted on this forum (or any forum) for about 5 or 6 months so I am not aware that she disappeared. Even though I did see K-os during her Mystery Tour in August 2010 and April 2011 (during her route back home), I do not know what she is currently up to.

As for Blythe Masters, I did meet up with a strange white woman claiming that she worked for JPM and she wanted to go out with me. So we went on a few dates but we stopped dating because she found out that I collected '70's silver art bars and she made me decide between her and the '70's silver art bars, The '70's silver art bars won.For the record, I have never fell in love with Blythe while we were dating so the break-up did not affect me at all.

Even though I am not Blythe Masters and I am not a doomer and I am not a conspiracy theorist, I will admit that I am really a card-carrying member of the sheeple nation. :)

EDIT: I also want to say that I still love my LCS's even though they did not have any '70's silver art bars or any ATB pucks in stock as of late. I will also say that the LCS have love me for since I bring them business when I come in with FRN ready to spend them. They show that love with breaks on their regular premiums and holding certain stuff for me until I get there. I have good strong relationships with all of the LCS in my area and I will always have love for the LCS's and I will ALWAYS support the LCS's in my area.

I should have been more specific with my post. It was sterling silverware pieces. Spatulas, dinnerware, small trays etc... You'd think there might be a premium on items like that, but apparently not.

Thanks for clarifying that. I do not know anything about sterling silverware, however, I have seen some of the LCS buy sterling silverware from people coming in to get rid of it. From what I have heard sterling silver bars and rounds seem be hard to move since it is not preferred like .999 silver is. I have seen situations where an LCS will not have any silver except the sterling silver bars. Apparently sterling silver bars/rounds seem like a hassle for the LCS to deal with. They will still buy sterling silver bars/rounds from a person but it will be at a steep discount relative to spot silver.

Hmmm starts making sense now then. You're probably the only one in her life who dumped her for Silver Art Bars. Must have impressed her a lot. Nowadays she follows your every line you post on the internet, and turn your gutfeelings into reality, just to show you how powerful she really is!

Don't worry about them, they don't have any noticable effect on the weight of the bar at all. It will function as a doorstopper or a paperweight just the same, as the bars without them... :)

That is very interesting. So I guess that means I was indirectly responsible for the silver crash from 49.85 to under 15. Wow. Who would've thunk it. A '70's silver art bar collector indirectly causing a 4-year bear market in silver prices. You can thank me later once silver hits $8 on or before March 2017. Now if I can convince her that '70's silver art bars are a good thing, then maybe we can go out on dates again. Maybe our next date should be at a lcs to hunt for '70's silver art bars. It cannot hurt to dream even though reality will come crashing down with her distain for them. Bummer.......

Yeah Josie, you underestimate your power to direct and control the silver spot price. I want you to use all your mental powers to push for a massive silver rally, to at least $50, then you can take a breather but make sure we get to $100.

That is easier said than done because my gut feeling is still calling for more downside for silver. Maybe one day in the distant future,my gut feeling will turn positive but until then................I will continue to take advantage of the artificial low prices by showing love for the lcs by visiting the lcs to buy more '70'S silver art bars and to buy atb pucks. Regardless of spot silver prices, I still have a 70s silver art bar addiction and that addiction needs to be fed on a regular basis.

I went to my main LCS yesterday during my lunch break to look for '70's silver art bars but did not find any. While I was there, he had some .999 generic silver that he was selling for $2.50 over spot and SAE's selling for $18.50's range. He had no gold and I do not think that he had any since gold dropped under $1100. There were a couple more LCS's that I went to but did not have much silver left.

EDIT: Ever since the latest smackdown in gold and silver, there is not much to be had at the local coin shops here I my area except for the very high premium stuff (slabbed bullion, old numismatic coins).

I bought a sterling silver fork & spoon at a coin show a few years ago, to eat with. It was so much nicer eating with them and the food tasted better. Especially if you polish the tines, the use of the sterling fork is a small sensual experience. My wife agreed and started swiping the fork at dinner time. So I found her a nice heavy fork from a different pattern. I think hers weighs almost 3-oz. Mine was about 2-oz. Silver was pretty high back then and I paid $78 for her fork. We use them daily and it's a nice enhancement. I like that they are anti-microbial and that I swallow minute particles of silver when I eat. If the SHTF I would use my silver fork rather than a titanium spork. I don't collect sterling but these forks are well worth the price. With silver so low now, I suggest going to coin or antique shops and finding a nice heavy sterling fork for each family member.
