DALLAS (Reuters) - An East Texas man was wounded after he fired a gun at an armadillo in his yard and the bullet ricocheted back to hit him in his face, the county sheriff said on Friday.

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe said the man, who was not identified, went outside his home in Marietta, southwest of Texarkana, at around 3 a.m. on Thursday morning. He spotted the armadillo on his property and opened fire.

"His wife was in the house. He went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo," Rowe said.

The animal's hard shell deflected at least one of three bullets, which then struck the man's jaw, he said.

The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where his jaw was wired shut, according to Rowe.

The status of the animal is unknown.

"We didn't find the armadillo," the sheriff said.

To have a bullet ricochet 180 degrees right back at you has to be incredibly rare. I wonder if it wasn't a shell fragment or something else that actually hit him in the face.

When I was a kid, was out at a dump site and took a shot at a bathroom sink with my .22 I did not realize that the dam thing was cast iron and instead of busting it. the round came back at me. Hit my hat and knocked it off my head.

Very good lesson learned that day, nearly shat myself once I figured out what happened, and that is one mistake never again repeated when it comes to shooting at anything unknown and not fully understanding where my shots go and end up.

The chances of a ricochet off of an adjacent surface (ie: earth or other) are higher to return to point of origin.

But to understand that u need to know the significance of 3,6 & 9.

Says it was a 38 revolver.

Did he pre-load the Armadillo with some "Rimfire" Tannerite ? That might explain it. :)

(What I'm calling "Rimfire" Tannerite is a new kind, designed for slower moving bullets ... might be
a different name.)

Bullets and targets with fluids in them (animals with blood) do tend to comply with laws of physics.

For example, if you've ever worked a lot with fluids, you learn to wear safety glasses because when you are pouring
from one container into another, it often 'bounces' up and comes RIGHT BACK AT YOU.

I wouldn't want that to happen with paint or a liquid fertilizer, or anything.

But it does sort of show a basic law of fluid dynamics - the fluid tends to come back, in a much smaller amount,
in the direction of whatever hit it. Especially if it's perpendicular etc. physics type stuff.

Now add ... a bullet moving at near supersonic speeds. Hitting a body that can be modelled as a fluid.

If even 1% of that original energy comes back to the point of origin, WATCH FVCKING OUT !

Who wants to get hit by a piece of armadillo shell moving at a hundred miles per hour ?

I recently asked one of the Range Managers at the local firing range, about using 1/4 inch steel plate
for metal targets.

They do that for one of the clubs, "Cowboy Action", where they might be shooting .45-90, which has LOADS
of energy in it.

He said, not safe, pieces of targets come off.

Gosh I would be surprised if they pull a bullet fragment out of him.

I'm thinking, if they pull out a bullet fragment, Jew Monsanto lawyers will be at the local courthouse at 9 AM Monday,
filing a patent claim, claiming the idea was there's.

Armadillo armor that can actually have a Superball type collision (elastic collision) with something shot at them ?!

GIVE ME SOME OF THAT :)
