Was running win 7 pro 64-bit and as many here got the notification that that win 10 was on the way. Well after careful review I installed it, and the install was probably the smoothest ever ! All of my programs were retained and worked after which surprised the hell out of me. I used the media creation tool and all I can say it was dam near painless and now have options that only windows 7 ultimate had now.

Been running it for a few days and my impression is not bad at all tho there is a slight learning curve with the new interface and learning where things are at.

The bad is media center has gone poof along with ...Gasp....solitaire, and what else ? not sure.

This flavor of windows is intrusive, and highly linked to the Microsoft world for they that have no fear about privacy can just go with the flow, tho the links can be cut, ....maybe?

They that do like their privacy there are several things that have to be turned off which can be done, tho finding all the switches is a minor pain, but worth it.

The op system is faster and robust ! Some things that I have run that would guarantee a crash just will not happen now.

One of the down sides is that it sorta looks like win 7 or 8 tho I have not used 8 but the gui so far is what you see is what you get, tho I expect that to change in time, once the code writers play around with it.

Still on a minor learning curve now that I have played with it for a few days because of the changes, but everything other than media center and the games as far as I have found is still there but deeper into the system , seeing this version of windows is centered more towards people that have not a clue other than clicking on their programs.

The upgrade gives you 30 days to revert back to your old setup, tho I did pull a disk image before I installed the new system.

So far, so good and am happy, win 10 does give more options when messing with the system when it comes to internal housekeeping.

Do expect more bells whistles and changes as time goes on!

I have it at work. I didn't go through the upgrade process and just formatted my drive and started over. Being that it's an SSD drive it took less than a half hour to complete the installation and configuration.

So far so good, hated Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is what Windows 8 should of been.

Just make sure you adjust your windows updates so that you aren't seeding updates to other windows 10 users. They set up Windows 10 updates like bittorrent so that all Windows 10 clients can upload updates to each other inside and outside of your local area network.

Yep!

That is one of a few switches that have to be turned off!

Never had the horror of using 8, loved 7 even better than xp!

Sent from my Nexus 7 .

I think your stuff gets scooped up anyway. if you correspond with someone and they have everything synching to the cloud, your side of the correspondence goes with it. I think it will get tedious as every time there is an update those settings will be put back to default and you have go through them again. If they haven't thought of that yet, don't listen to me.

Yea.

But with the operating system it is more than a intrusion thingy, seems like this op system is great but no need to make it easy for them to mine you. Tho the more databases are linked the worse it becomes for privacy.

This version of windows wants to marry you to microsoft if you let it, unlike anything before.

Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do – here’s how to opt out

Windows 10 is amazing. Windows 10 (http://bgr.com/tag/windows-10) is fantastic. Windows 10 is glorious. Windows 10 is faster, smoother and more user-friendly than any Windows operating system that has come before it. Windows 10 is everything Windows 8 should have been, addressing nearly all of the major problems users had with Microsoft’s (http://bgr.com/tag/microsoft) previous-generation platform in one fell swoop.
But there’s something you should know: As you read this article from your newly upgraded PC, Windows 10 is also spying on nearly everything you do.
DON’T MISS: Windows 10: The first 5 things you need to do immediately after you install it (http://bgr.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-upgrade-installation-settings/)
It’s your own fault if you don’t know that Windows 10 is spying on you. That’s what people always say when users fail to read through a company’s terms of service document, right?
Well, here is Microsoft’s 12,000-word service agreement (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/servicesagreement/default.aspx). Some of it is probably in English. We’re pretty sure it says you can’t steal Windows or use Windows to send spam, and also that Microsoft retains the right to take possession of your first-born child if it so chooses. And that’s only one of several documents you’ll have to read through.
Actually, here’s one excerpt from Microsoft’s privacy statement (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/default.aspx) that everyone can understand:
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

If that sentence sent shivers down your spine, don’t worry. As invasive as it is, Microsoft does allow Windows 10 users to opt out of all of the features that might be considered invasions of privacy. Of course, users are opted in by default, which is more than a little disconcerting, but let’s focus on the solution.
Rock Paper Shotgun has broken things down (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-privacy-settings/) into four main bullet points that will guide you through regaining control of your personal data.
READ MORE: 5 common problems people are having with Windows 10 – and how to fix them (http://bgr.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-error-most-common-problems/)
First, you’ll want to open Settings and click on Privacy. There, you’ll find 13 different screens — yes, 13 — to go through, and you’ll want to disable anything that seems worrying. The blog notes that most of the important settings can be found on the General tab, though other tabs are important as well. For example, you’ll definitely want to adjust what types of data each app on your system can access.
Next, users should consider dumping Cortana. Yes, the voice-driven assistant is easily one of the best new features in Windows 10 (http://bgr.com/2015/07/29/windows-10-features-top-5/), but it also plays fast and loose with your data. As a result, many users will find that the benefits do not outweigh the risks.
For the third task, you’ll have to venture outside the confines of your PC and hit the web. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to check out Microsoft’s nifty new Edge browser. In it, click on this link (https://choice.microsoft.com/en-gb/opt-out) and set both “Personalised ads in this browser” and “Personalised ads wherever I use my Microsoft account” to off. This will disable Microsoft’s Google-style ad tracking features.
The last tip is one that most users will likely forgo, as it is a bit excessive. Rock Paper Shotgun recommends removing your Microsoft account from Windows 10 completely and using a newly made local account instead. This way, Microsoft doesn’t grab hold of all your data to sync it across machines. To us that’s a great and useful feature, but if you want to kill it just follow the link below in our source section for complete instructions and plenty more details.

Yep, thar be some switches that need to be switched, and then hope they really do anything.

I for one do not do anything with my computer that could get me into trouble, I have no need to hide, the op system does seem to be a good one, tho it is what it is.

I did this one and it seems to work, it shore helped on my booting up.

A clean re-install of your 7 Pro would be faster and run everything just fine. 7 Pro is supported until 2020. Installing Win 10 was foolish.

Foolish is debatable.

And to each to their own ;)

Everything was running just perfect as it was with my win 7 pro system, but what the hay ! ;)

I do like this one but I also do have a month to go retro, or if later just restore from my last win 7 image.

Just hitching a ride just to see how things shake out, I did do a clean install with win 10, had to go the upgrade path, then because of the new key registered with microsoft, I reinstalled using their clean install, no skin of me, since I pulled a image of my win 7 pro drive before upgrading, so I will not loose anything.

Now I have two software keys for my laptop, one for win 7 pro and one for win 10 pro , win win ! :)

Seeing I have a one terabyte hd in this laptop , I just may see if I can make it a dual boot just for a grin.

Still making like a mosquito I see !

The most you'll ever need is 16 GB ram too (the most I ever use is 14 GB,) and anything Windows 7 Home Premium and up will cover that:

(https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_limits_ windows_7)I'm talking after having several 1GB PSD files open at once, running Blender, and a few other heavy programs.

All the even number Windows versions suck and the odd number ones are great (XP [5] and 7.) They wanted this version to suck so they skipped the odd numbered version.

10 is a must if you do any sort of audio and in particular midi with a PC. It has been specifically redesigned in this department. USB midi has been rather cumbersome because of its packet protocol however, this incarnation has been developed such that the stack has been optimised for these applications.

MIDI API - also available across all Windows 10 devices - this new API allows multi-client access to single MIDI hardware, new jitter-free operation, plus other bug fixes - we hope they embrace the RTP MIDI (over the network too)

Audio Stack Optimisation - new low latency priority operation rather than previous priorities of battery life etc. 15ms shaved off the WDM and WASAPI off the bat.

Additionally application developers can access and define minimum buffer sizes to generate latencies. On the phone OS, thats gone down from over 100ms to "tens of ms".

Audio Core Optimisation - it will now be possible to define and isolate all the core audio processing to a single core, meaning no other processes will be able to interrupt the stream.

New Codecs - FLAC and ALAC for Apple device support which means less "unsupported media type". Web Audio is also added.

It might not be the most unobtrusive OS in regards to privacy, but I think that you can workaround most of these issues if you implement the above advice.

So far 10 has been stable if not much more fluid of an OS in terms of speed, its nice to have the start menu back as well.

You don't need to join the cue to install it, you just need to set your location to US and language to English (US) to avoid the "Something happened" dialog box that is plaguing people.

So far I'm very happy, I usually HATE MS OS upgrades and generally switch them off until something critical forces me to, but with 10 they've done a lot of work to make it worthwhile I suspect, I know who would have thought?

Windows 10: Microsoft under attack over privacy (http://grizzom.blogspot.com/2015/08/windows-10-microsoft-under-attack-over.html)
From personalised ads in Solitaire to an address book-reading personal assistant, some users are unhappy with Windows 10’s approach to privacy

Windows 10 is under attack over default settings which users say compromise their privacy, just days after the operating system’s successful launch saw more than 14 million installs (http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/07/30/windows-10-the-first-24-hours/) in the first 24 hours.

Hundreds of commenters on sites such as Hacker News (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9976298) and Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f38ed/guide_how_to_disable_data_logging_in_w10/) have criticised default settings that send personal information to Microsoft, use bandwidth to upload data to other computers running the operating system, share Wi-Fi passwords with online friends and remove the ability to opt out of security updates.

Many of the complaints relate to the new personalised adverts embedded in Windows 10 (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/windows-10). When the OS is installed, Microsoft assigns the user a unique advertising ID, which it ties to the email address registered with the company. That email address is also associated with a raft of other services, such as the company’s productivity and communication programs, as well as app downloads and cloud-storage uploads.

I liked that it can remove some of the Windows default programs that can be removed under Apps & Features, an annoyance I immediately discovered since I prefer to “slim” down windows.

You can block these yourself manually in your hosts file with 127.0.0.1 if you want. The program allows you to clear or view the hosts file in Notepad.

The program does the same thing but just in case you wanted to see where your information heads to or you wanted to update your hosts file manually. A log file will be left in the folder you run it from.

I took a huge chance and ran this on my clean Windows 10 installation. It did modify the hosts file exactly as promised and did remove the Apps it promised. IObit Uninstaller (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/iobit_uninstaller.html) also spotted Destroy Windows 10 Spying running and removed leftover entries from the uninstall.

Yes. frankly I don't know what else people can do. I think the linux platform is very good these days. It still does require a bit more advanced experience but it is a lot better than it was even a couple years ago let alone 10 years ago.

I see talk of a firmware attack for Mac's. Would trash the firmware which basically gives you a brick unless you are an advanced user.

Microsoft are also going to make you buy apps that used to be included. I guess they give the OS for free, they have to make a buck somewhere.

So if you want to play DVD's you will need to buy the DVD player app. I think they said $15 USD. Probably $30 for aussies.

yes, a point made in the article I read. I do likewise. I also like the Klite codec player and use both. VLC is also pretty handy at streaming IP TV.

I've been wondering what else they could charge for. They have decided windows is now a service not a product, so all your data are belong to us.

They only need one side of any communication. As the spooks say, if you share it with one other person it's not a secret. It needs no protection.

pretty sure when you buy a new PC with windows factory-installed, msft gets paid. Unique windows S/N, certificate, dvd, etc. Not sure how much they make; but it's nowhere near the retail price for windows.

Which is why I will not be using any of their cloud services. If I install Windows 10 on my home PC (Still using Windows 7) I'll set it up as a stand alone and go through removing privacy violating services. Cortana being one of them.

As for software you can find app developers for open source that release their software free of charge. The only thing I've noticed with Windows based machines is that their office software is top notch and would probably be the only thing I would pay for.

Disturbing news, Microsoft says is reading and accessing all the content in your computer, mail, movies, data, audio, excel files, pictures, porn, pirated items, torrents, illegal speech, etc. and if they find something illegal, you will be accused as a criminal to FBI and local Police

The part about files is only if you use cloud storage like OneDrive, gDrive, etc. If you are using those, then you know you are giving up your privacy.
here is the statement:
"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to."
Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do – here’s how to opt out
Windows 10 is amazing. Windows 10 is fantastic. Windows 10 is glorious. Windows 10 is faster, smoother and more user-friendly than any Windows operating system that has come before it. Windows 10 is everything Windows 8 should have been, addressing nearly all of the major problems users had with Microsoft’s previous-generation platform in one fell swoop.
But there’s something you should know: As you read this article from your newly upgraded PC, Windows 10 is also spying on nearly everything you do.
It’s your own fault if you don’t know that Windows 10 is spying on you. That’s what people always say when users fail to read through a company’s terms of service document, right?
Well, here is Microsoft’s 12,000-word service agreement. Some of it is probably in English. We’re pretty sure it says you can’t steal Windows or use Windows to send spam, and also that Microsoft retains the right to take possession of your first-born child if it so chooses. And that’s only one of several documents you’ll have to read through.
Actually, here’s one excerpt from Microsoft’s privacy statement that everyone can understand:
--------------------
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.
-----------
If that sentence sent shivers down your spine, don’t worry. As invasive as it is, Microsoft does allow Windows 10 users to opt out of all of the features that might be considered invasions of privacy. Of course, users are opted in by default, which is more than a little disconcerting, but let’s focus on the solution.

Gee thanks Bill...............

But Windows 10 is a new era. Definitely considered a service and not a product now. People paid for Windows 7/8 and got 10 free. People who don't have legit copies of those are supposed to get 10 also.

Why? Is it free as in beer?

There is no room for complacency as Ares points out. IF you are going to use it, you need to take the threats seriously. It's getting harder. Thankfully there are people out there who are much smarter than me but think like me and make the tools to take the fight to them.

Speaking of tools the thing to remember is that you use the right tool for the particular job and windows is not the only tool around.

Libreoffice is nice. I've used it on a couple of occasions. I mostly use Outlook for my email client and have done so for years in an office setting. I can't find a suitable replacement for Outlook. For example Exchange has a service called Mailtips. It links to the back end of Exchange and gives you information letting you know if the person you are emailing is even still with the company or not(internally). It's a time savor, because say I used thunderbird to send an email to someone who got fired or left the company. I'd send the email and if the Admin was smart enough to set up the account as an alias for the persons former manager, it will get delivered to the former manager and he / she may or may not respond. Or if the Admin just didn't give a shit and disabled the account it will sit it the delivery queue for 4 hours (default delivery time limit with Exchange) waiting to deliver and if it doesn't in that time you'll get a non deliverable email response.

So either way mailtips saved you time, but only Outlook can interface with it.

That's just one example, I could go into many others of how native office is a huge time savor in a business environment.

But for home users who do not need that kind of functionality libreoffice is great and cost you nothing. :)

XP compatibility mode was nothing more than a virtual machine. If you want just look for a free virtual environment and load up Windows XP and you can still use it.

As far as I can see...No.

I did have xp mode but lost it in the upgrade, but at least for me I have moved on and only in a blue moon needed it.

They do offer Hyper-v virtual software that is part of win 10 tho it needs to be turned on with the win10 pro edition.

Just need a xp system.ISO to mount it in virtualBox or Vmware and they should run.

You think you've found the holy grail but all you've really found is modular mathematics and digital roots.

Here is the equation for the digital root of a number n:

Dr(n) = n - 9((n-1)/9)

So now in your spastic 'magicness', what you're doing is subtracting the digital root of a number (n) from itself, then finding the digital root of that number, then repeatedly finding the digital root until its a single digit.

therefore the first step will look something like this:

n - (n - 9((n-1)/9)) = 9((n-1)/9)

now we want the digital root of this number, (the n's cancel each other out and bracketed part becomes positive!), then we have:

9((n-1)/9) - 9[(9((n-1)/9)-1)/9]

Can you see where this is going?

Prolly why you're a MD not a PhD.

Just reading the forums over there and I didn't know this before, the OS has been in development since about 2007/8. No I see a post from 2005. Taking a while to get some traction?

There is no traction to speak of, but it is an independent operating system (though it intends to run Windows programs, and kind of does at times). I was curious about non-Windows or Linux/Unix OS's. The only other one I know of that got anywhere is OS2 (which was light years ahead of Windows 95 when it came out). I am looking at Haiku also, but just not sure what to do with it. Admittedly, if you want to run anything you need Windows or Linux/Unix! Even OS2 was cool, but there was very little to run at the time (and no VMWare).

yes OS2 had a lot of promise right out of the box. I often wonder why the AmigaOS never made it to GNU release. It's still closed source to this day. You can get it and run it but it needs PPC. Don't know if you can VM it.

Tech doesn't survive when it niches. It has to dominate the segment. Even Novell had its good points..well one or two. If it had picked up more native DB platform support it might have faired better in the corporate space.

Easily Control Automatic and Unwanted
Windows 7 & 8.1 Upgrading to Windows 10

Never 10 is an easy to use utility which gives users control over
whether their Windows 7 or 8.1 will upgrade itself to Windows 10.
The name “Never 10” is a bit of an overstatement, since this utility may also be used to easily re-enable Windows operating system automatic upgrading. But the primary reason for using this is to disable Windows' pestering insistence upon upgrading Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10.
Many users of Windows 7 and 8.1 are happy with their current version of Windows, and have no wish to upgrade to Windows 10. There are many reasons for this, but among them is the fact that Windows 10 has become controversial due to Microsoft's evolution of their Windows operating system platform into a service which, among other things, aggressively monitors and reports on its users activities. This alone makes many users uncomfortable enough to cause them to choose to wait. In line with this, a few months into 2016, Windows 10 started displaying unsolicited advertisements on its users' desktops. Others dislike the changes Microsoft made by merging their failed “tiled” smartphone user-interface into the Windows UI. And, finally, some object to being force-fed whatever Microsoft wants and simply wish to choose for themselves.
In July of 2015, responding to the significant user backlash, Microsoft added features to its Windows Update facility which allow it to be configured, on a machine-by-machine basis, to not forcibly upgrade qualifying Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems to Windows 10. However, Microsoft did not make this configuration simple. It requires the use of the group policy editor (which is not present in some qualifying systems) and/or the system registry. In other words, they created some deep internal configuration options but chose not to provide a simple user-interface to give their users the choice. “Never10” provides that choice.

The elegance of this “Never 10” utility, is that it does not
install ANY software of its own. It simply and quickly
performs the required system editing for its user.

If the system being configured has a version of Windows Update which is older than the required July 2015 release—which would mean that the “upgrade disable” options are not yet present—this utility will notify its user (see the sample display screens above) and offer to download and install the required update to Windows Update so that Windows can then be configured not to upgrade itself to Windows 10.
If Microsoft's GWX (Get Windows 10) had already secretly and silently downloaded the Windows 10 files into a hidden directory (this can be squatting on more than 6.5 gigabytes of your hard drive space), Never10 will show the exact count and amount of files and allow its user to remove them with one click.

Since this utility simply updates and/or configures the system to prevent or allow,
OS upgrading, it may be deleted after it has configured the system appropriately.Using this utility, inexperienced users will be able to easily use Never10 themselves, while advanced users will likely appreciate that fact that no additional software is installed and will be able to refer friends and family, whom they support, to this easy-to-use utility.
All users of earlier versions should run v1.3 briefly
to verify Win10 files have not been left behindDuring our initial testing we believed that once the Windows GWX components were disabled they would remove the multi-gigabytes of Windows 10 pre-download files that may have already been downloaded. Windows' built-in “Disk Cleanup” (after clicking the “Clean up system files” option) will show this massive Windows 10 blob as “Temporary Windows installation files” and allow them to be deleted. But we have never again been able to observe GWX automatically deleting these files. Therefore, as shown in the snapshots above, version 1.3 of Never10 adds a simple check for the Windows 10 pre-download and provides for their one-click deletion. Run version 1.3 briefly to make sure you are not losing more than 6.5 gigabytes of silently and secretly downloaded WIndows 10 files.
Never10 v1.3 adds quiet command-line options for enterprise users. See the Command line options page for usage details.

the ignorance is astounding. That guy is an idiot, but his world is gaming and wasting his time so I guess it's par for the course. Windows 10 is not just about collecting data to better market games to you. The data collection is total and complete. The data will be shared with agencies. Remember that MS is now US Govt owned.

The act of forcing a change of OS onto someone is astounding. It should have been blocked. If a car maker came to my home and started changing out parts of my car because they felt like it, it would be a problem. What they are doing is criminal.

There is a lot of hardware out there that is not going to be supported. The manufacturers are just not going to make drivers. There is a lot of software out there that does not work on 8+. Forcing 10 is going to leave a lot of businesses without systems to run their business. Some of these systems cost many tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands to build. Governments have spent millions on systems that won't run. Tax payers are going to be up for more billions because systems will need to be rewritten.

A lot of systems that are upgraded appear to work ok for the first couple months. This is because there is a hybrid period where Windows 10 is using the old OS drivers, HOWEVER, over a period of about 2 months, those drivers are being shut down or removed as part of this 30+ days period. After that the systems stop working because the drivers are no longer available. If the manufacturer is not making Windows 10 drivers the system stops working.

Microsoft does not check a system to see if it is being supported by the manufacturer before upgrading. They simply don't care. They force it on people, often without them understanding and it's somehow the users responsibility to check if the system supports Windows 10 AND even if it doesn't you can't tell Microsoft No. don't do it.

After the 30 day period is done, there is no roll back and once the PC stops working, there is no data recovery. Let me repeat. NO DATA RECOVERY. Anything on the PC is lost, if Windows 10 kills it. Not a joke, Not BS. No files, no email, no databases. Nothing is recoverable.

I've abandoned the Win platform. No regrets. Some companies need the platform for their business applications. I've found an alternative for everything I need and some are actually better and some cross platform capable tools I use work better and faster now. So for me it's been a win.

Also, that guy is very fat, how can you get like that. And why would you use media center. Really? lame. on the other hand his DJI drone YT's were good, but he should limit framing to above the shoulders.

Juts going back to my Windows 10 diatribe. you need to do much more to shut down the telemetry. I'm not confident you can shut it all down and still be able to use it.

Gimp2 for photoshop. Some minor things are not straight forward to do but can be worked around, mostly. Layers are bit limited.

Blender is an alt for 3DSMAX.

Inkspace for Illustrator.

IBM 2311 disk unit, with its six platters

The 2311 mechanism is largely identical to the 1311, but recording improvements allow higher data density. The 2311 stores 7.25 megabytes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte) on a single removable IBM 1316 disk pack (the same type used on the IBM 1311) consisting of six platters that rotate as a single unit. The 2311 has ten individual read/write (R/W) heads mounted on a common actuator which moves in and out hydraulically and is mechanically detented at the desired track before reading or writing occurred. Each recording surface has 200 tracks plus three optional tracks which could be used as alternatives in case faulty tracks were discovered. Average seek time was 85 ms. Data transfer rate was 156 kB (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte)/s. Because the 2311 was to be used with a wide variety of computers within the 360 product line, its electrical interconnection was standardized. This created an opportunity for other manufacturers to sell plug compatible (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug_compatible) disk drives for use with IBM computers and an entire industry was born.

Microsoft won't stop collecting data, just make it more "transparent"

The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) said on Wednesday it had concluded an investigation into the operating system begun in 2015, which it said revealed data protection gaps under Swiss law.

"The FDPIC investigations revealed that data processing in connection with Windows 10 did not conform in every respect with the data protection legislation," the authority said in a statement.

In response, Microsoft made proposals to the commissioner which had been agreed after adjustments by the FDPIC.

"The technical implementation of the modifications requested by the FDPIC will be carried out worldwide as part of the two Windows 10 software releases planned for 2017," the FDPIC said.

The Swiss government agency said the agreement with Microsoft meant there was "no need for court proceedings".

What is collected:

In its 2015-2016 annual report, the FDPIC said the system's quick installation or "get going fast" option automatically activated nearly all data transfer and access processes, which meant user data, including location details, browser and search history, keyboard entries and nearby wi-fi networks, automatically went to Microsoft.

In concluding its investigation, the FDPIC said the Windows 10 "quick access" and "customise settings" pages had not fully met transparency requirements. Information was lacking on the content of browser, feedback and diagnostic data, as well as on the length of time that transmitted data would be stored, it said.

I needed to buy a new notebook comp last Dec, an HP "notebook/tablet" win-10 box, meaning the display detaches from the keyboard, and all chips/memory/etc is contained in the display/stand-alone-tablet... the keyboard is just thin & lightweight, coz it's really just an input device to the tablet/display. Was my first experience with win-10. AFAIK, the main notable thing about it is, it tries to transition between the smartphone style of touch-screen input, and the traditional keyboard/mouse input. The keyboard's touchpad/mouse allows you to do the smartphone style finger-sweep navigation, and zoom-in/out with 2 fingers.

It's functional, but overall I'm not very impressed... I never understood tablets; I mean the ones which have a typical notebook sized display, 12 inches or whatever-- IOW too big to carry in your pocket... yet you need to use tablets' touchscreen keyboard, which for me is frustratingly slower than a traditional keyboard! :( If you're going to get a notebook comp sized display, why not just get a notebook comp with a proper keyboard?!

In short I'd revert back to my old win-7 ultimate notebook!

and don't get me started on trying to pick up a cheap hard-wired external USB mouse from Office Depot. They must've had 50 external mice to choose from, and they were ALL wireless-- meaning you were marrying the battery companies! I had to buy a hard-wired mouse from amazon! :(

I'm called bigjon because I'm 6'6" tall.

That picture is of a unit in a clean room on a test stand.
In the field it would never be that exposed to ambient air. One little dust particle is 3 or more times as thick as the 20 micron distance the head flys at. Before opening up a unit a special highly filtered blower is hooked up and pressure applied then the front glass is taken off and you are now kneeling in a wind tunnel with 68 degree air blowing on you. Not a pleasant place to work.

Here is a picture of how they look in the wild.

Best choice is open source. Look into Linux Mint and Unbuntu. Very user friendly and in many ways easier to use than Windows.

I needed a new laptop last Dec, and had no retail store choice outside win-10. Didn't even realize at the time, but got this HP laptop/tablet combo, where the display removes & contains all the key components. So it has all these software components which facilitate it acting as a tablet. It's really a mystery to me, coz I NEVER use it as a tablet. Bought a backup PC for $239. Have not used a PC since I was in the corporate world, now a long time ago.

One thing I can say is this PC don't freeze up like they used to. However at least a dozen times a day the computer won't respond to commands and the command has to be repeated a time or two before the computer decides to act.

Still, just like in the 80's the help function is basically useless!
Even online too, the tabs and options helpful people describe just don't exist on my computer. Just like decades ago!

I have to register my name with Microsoft if I want to add 'unauthorized' apps for my safety they say, no need if its an authorized app at the MS site. But also I need to register my name with Microsoft if I want to add their authorized apps.

There is no user friendly 'artificial intelligence' in MS. Like an undo button. Or having more than one video file open, or remembering where you were on the video when you reopen it. And I have to close annoying windows every time I do basic shit like plugging in earphones.

And the camera keeps coming to record me (its tapped over of course) because the command to turn it on is basically the same as the paste function.

And I can't change the default browser. Bing is almost as bad a search engine as communist google but stopped allowing time searches.

And the computer wants to keep checking and refreshing to the internet. Have to pre-save most every webpage as a file if I want to read anything while offline. "Work offline' browser function button for each individual webpage sort of worked at first then just stopped working at all after a few weeks.

But $239 ! Cheaper than my first 286.
