VW scandal: chief executive Martin Winterkorn refuses to quit
0/23/15
‘The defiant boss of Volkswagen has refused to resign despite an escalation of the the emissions scandal following the admission by the world’s second largest car marker that 11m vehicles worldwide have been fitted with a defeat device designed to cheat emissions tests.

Martin Winterkorn appeared in a video to insist he was “endlessly sorry” for the events at the end of a day in which VW was forced to deny a report in Germany that he will leave as chief executive this Friday, to be replaced by Matthias Müller, the chairman of its sister company Porsche.

He spoke after the German company revealed the potential financial liabilities for the first time. It is putting aside €6.5bn (£4.7bn) to deal with the potential costs of the crisis, prompting a further 20% fall in its share price.’

Nice to see a manufacturer call the emissions laws a bunch of BS and try to get around them vs just bowing down to whatever gov mandates get told to them.

Same as cutting off your cat, running moonshine, or growing weed in your backyard.

No one cares about this except the douchebag regulators who had the wool pulled over their eyes. The public, if I may speak for the majority, don't give a shit. I've always thought that diesel was a dirty, unrefined fuel yet the "authorities" have been cramming down our throats the "fact" that it burns cleaner and is better for the environment. This goes way deeper than VW. What about all the other automakers that "passed" their emissions tests?

I am sure that VW isnt the only one cheating... sure he is going to have his $$ as he was obeying orders

Volkswagen emissions scandal: UK to conduct its own inquiry into vehicle testing as BMW hit by fallout
B 25th September 2015

The UK is to launch its own investigation into vehicle emissions testing, following the Volkswagen scandal. The UK regulator, the Vehicle Certification Agency, will work with car makers to re-run lab tests where necessary and compare them with “real-world” road tests.

The UK Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the move was to ensure the issue of emissions cheating was not industry-wide.

“My priority is to protect the public as we go through the process of investigating what went wrong and what we can do to stop it happening again in the future.”

The German car maker said it hoped to release more details about the which brands and models are affected by “defeat device” software designed to cheat emissions tests today.

Everyone Is Doing It’: How Carmakers Manipulate Emissions Test Results
5th October 2015

‘With Germany’s largest company by revenue, Volkswagen, deep in damage recovery mode, and the market still unable to decide just how systemic and profound the fallout will be from the emissions scandal which has already cost the job of VW’s CEO and which according to some will impact the GDP of Hungary and the Czech republic as much as -1.5%, many are still trying to determine not if but how many other companies – whether “clean diesel” focused or otherwise – will be impacted by the crackdown on emissions fraud.

We don’t know the answer suffice to speculate that it will be “many” for one simpler reason: there are dozens of ways to manipulate emissions tests in both the lab and on the road, and with the temptation to “reduce” emissions all too great for management teams laser-focused on boosting profit margins, one can be certain that in this particular case not only is there more than one cockroach, there are dozens.’

As an old Volkswagen mechanic I have to chime in here. Over a decade ago I began to focus on diesel engines and their potentials for high miles per gallon efficiency. My 1990 Dodge diesel one ton truck got 26 mpg one way and 25 mpg on the return from Ponce’s home. That was 1,100 miles traveled in total. This Dodge is my heavy duty hauler and is the best I can find for the money I paid which was $2,600.

I am nearing completion of a 1987 VW Scirocco that I have replaced the gas engine with a rebuilt diesel engine. I also rebuilt the 5 speed transmission with a stretched out gear ratio in order to accommodate the lower rpm diesel engine. I thought that I was the first to make this diesel conversion in a VW Scirocco but found someone in Oregon who has already done this and is getting 65 mpg. The VW Rabbit and VW Jetta diesel models are not as aerodynamic as the VW Scirocco and therefore get about 50-55 mpg. By the way, I got the Scirocco for free at a garage sale. The body and interior are in excellent condition for being 28 years old. With the diesel conversion I will have less than $2,000 invested. Of course I did the work myself and therefore the low cost. A rebuilt diesel engine would cost over $2,500 installed, not to mention another $1,200 for a rebuilt transmission.

However I have a recently rebuilt diesel engine I got for $300 and another good used diesel engine I got for $200. So if I had instead put in a used diesel engine and changed out the 5th gear ratio I would have $4-500 invested. My point here is that we don’t have to spend a fortune for a new car or even many thousands for a later used car. I have owned hundreds of cars through my career and have distilled my practicality down to what is the most cost effective. As an aside, diesel fuel stores better than gasoline which, in my opinion, is dangerous to have around in large quantity. I’m thinking in terms of having fuel prep storage for all of my diesel tractors, generator and cars.

Older diesel engines with mechanical fuel injection are EMP safe, far cheaper to maintain, much easier to maintain and reliable for the long term. Long term because I am planning ahead for many years in which expect there will be many hardships.

Just my opinion, ymmv.

Best wishes,

agnut

In addition 66 percent said they did not trust any car manufacturers to act in the public interest.

Audi and Porsche join VW scandal: EPA finds more emission cheating software
3rd November 2015

Audi and Porsche have been pulled into Volkswagen’s emission-cheating scandal. The US environmental regulator has broadened its investigation and found that the Porsche Cayenne and five Audi models also have software cheating federal pollution standards.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has extended its list of affected vehicles to include a new 2015 Porsche Cayenne and the yet-to-come 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, A7 Quattro, A8, A8L, and Q5. It also includes the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg.

“The NOV [notice of violation]alleges that VW developed and installed a defeat device in certain VW, Audi and Porsche light duty diesel vehicles equipped with 3.0 liter engines for model years (MY) 2014 through 2016 that increases emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) up to nine times EPA’s standard,” the EPA said in a statement on Monday.’

‘Following VW’s smog-testing cheating scandal in September, Mitsubishi on Tuesday announced that its employees used outdated emissions testing methods outlawed in Japan on millions of vehicles sold since 1991.

The outdated methods violated Japanese regulatory standards and provided deceptively low results for emissions measurements. The environmental impact of Mitsubishi’s decades-long deception is as of yet still undetermined.’

they all are.

The emissions controls are unachievable. So they are all doing it. I think it's all a storm in a teacup. A lot of noise accusing people of doing a wrong when the right was impossible is just stupid think.
