To answer his/her (can't tell) question, "is this the American Dream I worked so hard for?" The answer is, what type of job did you expect exists for women's studies majors??

...and after that $60k, I can barely write to boot!

Many bartenders participate in women's studies (or the study of women).

One time a waitress at a restaurant (where she had worked for years) I used to frequent advised me she had an English degree that she owed student loans on so I asked her, "What are you going to do with that?" which she took offense to.

Depends on what she owed. $20,000, maybe ok. $200,000, a waste of money. I am not a proponent of English degrees for my kids (I want them to be able to get a job), but they are not the worst, and journalists, writers, etc. can benefit from an English degree. Degrees like English, History, etc. can be very enriching (in non-financial measures), but I would not go deep into debt for them.

My point exactly. Unsure of what her debt level was, however she was not utilizing her 'education' to make money come in, nor even using it for non-pecuniary enjoyment or satisfaction.

Some of my former co-workers went through culinary school at the "CIA", Culinary Institute of America. It's considered the Harvard/Yale of the culinary world.

This was almost 10 years ago mind you and people were getting int $150,000 in student debts, and working minimum wage cooking. Most of them gave up cooking in 1-3 months and ended up as waiters, struggling to pay off their debts.

2/3rd of our entire wait staff were old cooks who were in this same situation.

Imagining that's a dude (could also be a women's-studies-ish bull dyke...), looks like the type who would have a tough time getting laid... prolly thought majoring in women's studies would be just the ticket to pussy on tap.

The point being, one needs to be smart enough to understand that you need to study a field where there is actually work to be done where someone will pay you to do it. If I spend four years and borrow $100k to study unicorns and fairies, and then I can't find a job, who is to blame, me or "the 1%"??

Yup!

Trades/professions which are needed vs liberal arts ?

The first two can earn a good living well above minimum wages and the last turns out cubical mice and short order hash slingers and such!

5 Reasons You Should Major In Women’s Studies (http://thoughtcatalog.com/hilary-watchler/2012/04/5-reasons-you-should-major-in-womens-studies/)

Since it covers so many different subjects, you have a broad range of job opportunities; you’re not tied to a specific field like you would be with a marine biology or accounting degree. With whatever job(s) you end up having, you can apply what you’ve learned from Women’s Studies to any situation — it’s not so much a career choice as it is a life choice; you’re adopting a new perspective that you’ll use in every relationship, every job, and every circumstance.

So since the person in the OP is a bartender, he/she can apply what he/she learned from women's studies in bartending. Sounds like he/she got exactly what the degree promised. Hell, they even tell you straight forward it's not a career choice, which is code for "useless."

From the persons message, it seems they were successful at least once.

Please can anyone tell me what college is, compared to university? Does one come before the other Or are they completely different?

We don't have college here. After high school you go to either:
1) University
2) Vocational school to learn a trade or maybe an office skill like book keeping or office management
3) Work

Is college a place you might also learn boiler making or electrician, plumber etc? A vocation. Or do you have other places for that?

College and university are basically the same. Universities are public owned, while colleges are private. You go to class and earn your degree at both.
