Austria’s populist, right-of-centre Freedom Party has doubled its share of the vote in a regional election amid concern about the influx of refugees in recent months.

Preliminary results put the Freedom Party in second place, with 30.9 percent of the vote in Sunday’s Upper Austria election — compared with the 15.4 percent it received in 2009.

The party’s gain contrasts with a 6-percent loss for the centre-left Social Democrats and an 11-percent loss for the centre-right People’s Party, which remained in first place with 37.4 percent of the vote.

The anti-mass migration Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) could be on the verge of winning local elections in Vienna, a city that has voted socialist for 70 years.

Amid growing concern over the migrant crisis, Viennese voters are turning to the FPO in record numbers, and party is now just one point behind the city’s governing socialists – within the margin of error.

Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache told a large rally outside St Stephen’s Cathedral on Thursday: “Let’s roll up our sleeves and do this, out of love for our home town, out of love for the people of this city! We will succeed, I can feel it.”

Freedom part falls short.

Even as many traditional Socialist voters turned to the Freedom Party to further erode traditional blue-collar Socialist support, many people who normally don’t vote Socialist — or don’t vote at all — did so this time to prevent a Freedom Party triumph.
